2009
1Transatlantic
The Whirlwind

I prefer not looking at this as an album, but as an album-long song. As an individual song, this is a progressive masterpiece, but I feel like as an album it lacks the variety you get by including several songs, each giving the album another side to its idenity. Anyway, this is one of the best prog songs ever created in my opinion. Fantastic.
2Alestorm
Black Sails at Midnight

This is probably the most consistant Alestorm album in terms of quality. It's a solid album with some huge hits and cool filler. Quite like this one a lot. Also, the cover art is sick.
3Insomnium
Across the Dark

What a fantastic journey this album is. Insomnium are absolute masters of the atmospheric metal music craft, and this album is another undeniable proof of that.
4Heaven and Hell
The Devil You Know

This album is exactly what it sounds like - Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio after 40 years of them gaining experience and developing their own musical identity. They both made great music and albums outside of the H&H lineup, but listening to this album, it truly feels like they really were meant to be playing together all this time. I'm not going to say it's perfect, but it most certainly is a demonstration of just how amazing musicians these guys are, both individually and as a band. This is certainly a worthy album to be RJD's last.
5Mastodon
Crack the Skye

This album has a very unique atmosphere and sound. It's more on the melodic and progressive side and while I think it would be fair to say this is their most... "thematically consistant" album, I was never able to love it to the level I'd expect. Don't get me wrong it's still a great experience, but the songs themselves are not perfectly to my taste here. Great album overall.
6Dream Theater
Black Clouds and Silver Linings

The classic Dream Theater roster splits apart on a high note. This is probably their best album in a decade, and leaves a somewhat sour taste in my mouth seeing the stark contrast between this album, and the albums that came after it (well... ADTOE is actually pretty great, but the other ones aren't). It's their most personal album yet - most of the lyrics here are either about real stories from the band-members' lives (A Nightmare to Remember, The Count of Tuscany) or about their personal struggles and inner worlds (Wither, The Shattered Fortress, The Best of Times). As such, not absolutely everything works here, but it's very clear just how passionate the band is about this album. I love it a lot. Sad to see Mike Portnoy leave, but this is a magnificent farewell gift from him to us.
7Ancestors
Of Sound Mind

An interesting mix of progressive, doom and stoner metal, and the result is pretty weird. I'm gonna have to revisit this one a few more times before I can say anything.
8Evile
Infected Nations

A celebration of old school thrash. It's not as good as their previous album, but it's still awesome. Especially loved "Hundred Wrathful Deities", the closing instumental epic.
9Megadeth
Endgame

I think I might remember this albuma little more fondly than it really is, but I still like it a lot. Songs here are hit or miss most of the time, but it features some really great ones overall. This is the last Megadeth album as far as I'm concerned, since I completely lost all hope with this band after this album.
10Amorphis
Skyforger

Extremely enjoyable album, but rather forgettable in the long run. There's not much special about it to differentiate it from the other albums from this era of the band. Still undoubtedly a good time.
11Lamb of God
Wrath

Loved it more than expected. Precise, impactful and hard-hitting - this is one of LOG's best.
