CugnoBrasso
03.19.18 | Oh ok, so this is how you write █████? |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @CugnoBrasso - The band description on Sputnik states that "we're just gonna call them by their ASCII-friendly name, nic (Czech for "nothing")". I imagine that it would be hard to search for them using █████ : ) |
TheSpirit
03.19.18 | Nice, I'll have to check out some of these. The screamo/black metal thing can be pretty cool when done right. We Came Out Like Tigers was a good band that mixed both. |
botb
03.19.18 | Check plebeian grandstand |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @TheSpirit - I cannot believe I forgot We Came Out Like Tigers. They will deservedly be added to the list. |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @bobt - I am familiar with Plebeian Grandstand. I also considered them more of a mix of hardcore and black metal as opposed to screamo and black metal. Nonetheless, they are a great band. Thanks for the comment. : ) |
SCREAM!
03.19.18 | Wow I haven't actually heard any of these. Where do you recommend starting?
Also, have you heard any Celeste? |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @SCREAM! - I would recommend starting with the top 2 in the list. I do know Celeste...they were formed by members of the great French screamo band Mihai Edrisch. I enjoy their albums but I am not personally a huge fan of the sludge metal sound/genre. |
Sinternet
03.19.18 | Alpinist |
MarsKid
03.19.18 | O sweet someone checked Niboowin, good on ya |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @MarsKid - I saw that you added the band Niboowin to Sputnik a couple of weeks ago. Great find. I just discovered them yesterday via some Google searches. |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @Sinternet - I have not listened to Alpinist in a very long time. I am due for another listen. Thanks for the suggestion. : ) |
zaruyache
03.19.18 | Oh cool someone added 4 to the database. Good list but Vestiges are more like crust or w.e., not really screamo imo. |
combustion07
03.19.18 | Alpinist is awesome. Should probably check the stuff here |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @zaruyache - I am that someone...I found ['selva] on-line last month and have become a fan. I have been listening to them and møl quite a bit lately. |
TheSpirit
03.19.18 | Oh shit, you'd probably dig Suicide Nation as well. One of the first bands to fuse screamo/hardcore and black metal |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @TheSpirit - Wow...that is an oldie for sure. I am listening to their A Requiem... for All That Ever Mattered album from 1999 now. Back then, in my late 20's, I was mostly listening to punk rock. My tastes have changed a lot since then. : ) |
TheSpirit
03.19.18 | I was only 9 and listening to stuff like blink-182 and smash mouth, so i can relate ;] |
JLR2DEG
03.19.18 | @TheSpirit - You were only 9 in the late 90's...I must be the oldest guy on Sputnik at the ripe old age of 47. : ) |
JLR2DEG
03.20.18 | I added the following to the list: (1) We Came Out Like Tigers - Agelessness And Lack, (2) Portrayal of Guilt - Portrayal of Guilt, (3) VEL (GER) - Obsidian and (4) non-'s self titled album non-. |
zaruyache
03.21.18 | might wanna cheq Sleeping Peonies, who sometimes sound like screamgaze, sometimes ambient, and sometimes dsbm-gaze depending on the release or track. |
JLR2DEG
03.21.18 | Thanks again @zaruyache. I will give Sleeping Peonies a listen. |
JLR2DEG
03.21.18 | And the list lives again. : ) I just added Self by Terzij de Horde and One Day All This Will End by Svalbard. |
Hawks
03.21.18 | Nice props for 8.
Cara Neir is always a great choice for bm/screamo combo. |
JLR2DEG
03.21.18 | @Hawks - great suggestion. It has been a while since I have listened to Cara Neir and I did not remember then as a black metal/screamo combo. I am adding their Portals to a Better, Dead World album to the list. Thanks. |
brainmelter
03.21.18 | niiiiiiice list. I need to czech some of these out
surprised to not see bosse-de-nage on here |
JLR2DEG
03.21.18 | Thanks @brainmelter. Bosse-De-Nage is one of my favorite bands. I have always considered them to be more of a black metal/post hardcore hybrid so I chose not to add them to this particular list. But since screamo and post hardcore are combined by many bands, I can see the argument for Bosse-De-Nage belonging on this list. |
SomeGuyDude
03.21.18 | Holy shit thank you for this list.
Shame you don't like Celeste, Misanthrope(s) is seriously one of my favorite albums ever. |
JLR2DEG
03.21.18 | @SomeGuyDude - thank you for your kind comment. I do like Celeste but I am just not a huge fan of the sludge metal sound. I think that Misanthrope(s) is the best of their albums. : ) |
SomeGuyDude
03.22.18 | I think that might be why it's my favorite, too. It's not as trudging.
And I am maaaaaaad that portrayal of guilt has so little material out. That EP is fucking blistering. I also need me more that sounds like Respire and love/lust. |
brainmelter
03.22.18 | you should check out World Narocosis - Lyruljóra |
dbizzles
03.22.18 | Commenting for future use. |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | @SomeGuyDyde - I agree concerning Portrayal of Guilt. Their self titled EP and Street Sects split include such great songs. I think they are due for a full length LP. |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | @dbizzles - Good to have you on board. : ) |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | @brainmelter - I just finished listening to World Narocosis - Lyruljóra. I love the music but the vocals (especially the high pitched howls) are kind of hard to take. |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | I just added the album Weltschmerz by Totem Skin. |
Dinosaur
03.22.18 | 14 is siiick. I have a lot to check on here |
SomeGuyDude
03.22.18 | That reminds me, have you checked out Heaven in her Arms? The vocals can be a bit much to deal with, they're VERY Silencer-like, but if you're okay with that the instrumentation is just incredible. |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | @SomeGuyDude - I have followed Heaven in her Arms as a post rock influenced screamo band like Envy but had forgotten that they added black metal influences to their sound on the White Halo album. I am giving that album a listen right now and really enjoying it. Thanks for the suggestion. : ) |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | I just added White Halo by Heaven In Her Arms. Thanks @SomeGuyDude. : ) |
StarlessCore
03.22.18 | youd dig locktender |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | @StarlessCore - I know Men As Trees well but I have not listened to much Locktender. Would you recommend I start with their older or newer albums? Thanks. |
BAG
03.22.18 | your profile picture is epic |
JLR2DEG
03.22.18 | Thanks @BAG. I thought it was very fitting when I found it on-line. I cannot take credit for creating it. : ) |
Tyler.
03.22.18 | lmao
|
JLR2DEG
03.23.18 | I just added the album Darvo by Russian band Toluca. |
Taxt
03.23.18 | I love that Portrayal of Guilt EP and have been looking for stuff in a similar vein, so I'm gonna check a bunch of these.
Thanks for the great list |
JLR2DEG
03.23.18 | @Taxt - Thank you. I hope the list helps you find some new favorite bands/albums. I have found some new favorite bands from comments on this list. : ) |
JLR2DEG
03.23.18 | I just added Misanthrope(s) by Celeste. Thanks for the suggestion @SomeGuyDude. |
Hawks
03.23.18 | Ohhhhhh yeah Celeste rules, forgot about them tbh. |
DDDeftoneDDD
03.23.18 | looks like a great mix...don't know any of these though tbh |
Egarran
03.23.18 | What is the general profile of a person who likes this music? |
JLR2DEG
03.23.18 | I just added (1) To Clasp a Fallen Wish With Broken Fingers by So Hideous, My Love, (2) EP 2012 by Gendarme, and (3) Purge by Eave. |
JLR2DEG
03.23.18 | @Egarran - I am not sure that I can answer that question. Personally, I am a huge fan of both screamo and blackgaze (post black metal) so I suppose that could be the general profile of a person who likes this kind of music. Also, there are a lot of other influences in some of this music including post metal, sludge, grind, and so on. And I am a grandpa at 47 years old (probably the oldest guy on Sputnik) but I do not think that age is part of the general profile. : P |
OldCrime
03.24.18 | "Blackened screamo" is completely new to me so I'll have to check out some of these! Bookmarked :) |
Egarran
03.25.18 | "And I am a grandpa at 47 years old"
Awesome. That destroys one of my many prejudices about this genre.
Did you listen to something like this when you were in your twenties?
|
JLR2DEG
03.25.18 | @Egarran - In my early teens (early 1980's), I was into punk rock and the bands of that time like Black Flag, The Germs, Fear, The Dead Kennedys, etc. In the later 1980's, I shifted to more melodic hardcore punk rock after first hearing Bad Religion's amazing Suffer album and I stuck with that genre into my 20's and 30's. I was also a big fan of Nomeansno although they do not fit into the melodic hardcore punk rock genre. Nomeansno was just a unique jazz/punk/hardcore band that drew from a lot of influences and styles. In my early 40's, I came across the Spiderland album by Slint. The mixture of post rock and spoken word/screamed vocals appealed to me and led me to explore the world of screamo. The screamo album that made me a convert to the genre was City of Caterpillar's self titled LP. Now I listen to a lot of post rock influenced screamo and more recently blackgaze. There is so much instrumental complexity and emotional depth to these two genres of music. These styles just get under my skin...in a good way. But there is no one my age to share my music with as most people think it is just screaming and noise. That is part of the reason I joined Sputnik. There are like minded people out here. |
JLR2DEG
03.25.18 | @OldCrime - I hope that this list provides you with some new favorites. I have been listening to several of these albums repeatedly as of late. |
Egarran
03.25.18 | Thanks, that's fascinating. I can see how punk might lead to this.
My path was more like pop->hip hop->new wave-> metal->metal->metal |
JLR2DEG
03.25.18 | @Egarran - Your path sounds fascinating to me because you went from pop to hip hop to new wave to not only heavy metal but also black metal, death metal, doom metal, and so on. What caused you to make that huge jump? |
Egarran
03.25.18 | I knew Slayer through Beastie Boys and I heard one Slayer song on the radio that I liked (criminally insane). Then at age 14 I went to a boarding school where 90% of the boys became metalheads in about a week. Somehow all the classics were circling around on every stereo at that place. |
JLR2DEG
03.26.18 | @Egarran - Well that definitely explains your jump into metal. : ) |
Egarran
03.26.18 | Buuuut I suppose in a decade we'll be listening to The Eagles and Rolling Stones. |
JLR2DEG
03.28.18 | I made two more additions to the list - Sub Lumina by A Tiny Spider and Bipolarität by Surmoi.
|
cold
03.28.18 | Imma have to peep this list too |
JLR2DEG
03.28.18 | @coldheaven - I hope you find some albums in the list that you really like. I would recommend starting with albums 1 through 5. |
cold
03.28.18 | I'll get to that once I stop listening to the first wave of bands you rec'd lol |
JLR2DEG
03.29.18 | I just made my final two additions to this list - Happiness by Somnambula and Glooming by Damien the Cat. Thanks for all of the great comments and suggestions.
|
JLR2DEG
05.07.18 | Respire's new album Dénouement came out on May 1 and is definitely worth a listen.
https://respirefamily.bandcamp.com/ |
JLR2DEG
05.11.18 | I just added two albums to the list - Rigen by Cohol and Zmar by Zmar. I will keep adding to the list as I come across new bands. |
BREAKDOWNS
05.11.18 | that black bar band demo is pretty damn cool, would've been all over that shit a couple years back |
JLR2DEG
05.11.18 | @BREAKDOWNS - I really like that demo too. That band is known by that black bar, by the name NIC, and by the name "We Don't Have a Name".
https://wedonthaveaname.bandcamp.com/album/demo |
JLR2DEG
07.15.18 | Just added Sunbirds by Slowly Building Weapons and La Agonía Del Eros by Eros + Massacre. |
