10.19.20 | Seeing this in theaters twice sounds like a chore tbh
Fantastic movie but it's a lot of work |
brainmelter
10.19.20 | yea the movie is kind of a chore. it’s def not casual or passive viewing but in my particular situation it was $4 a showing and something to do with drunk friends at a 10pm showing on a weeknight |
brainmelter
10.19.20 | you never know how good something is until it’s gone |
Ryus
10.19.20 | "Seeing this in theaters twice sounds like a chore tbh"
nah it was dope. first time i didnt know what to expect and couldnt understand willem dafoe's accent for shit so the second time was quite rewarding. appreciated the humorous elements a lot more the second time around |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.19.20 | "$4 a showing and something to do with drunk friends at a 10pm showing on a weeknight"
I mean yeah that sounds great tbh
"nah it was dope. first time i didnt know what to expect and couldnt understand willem dafoe's accent for shit so the second time was quite rewarding. appreciated the humorous elements a lot more the second time around"
The humour was evident for me first time around but I can, on second thought, appreciate understanding willem (and the dialogue on a whole) better. It was a struggle sometimes the first time around lmao. But I guess that's part of what makes me feel like it's a pretty demanding movie

10.19.20 | "$4 a showing and something to do with drunk friends at a 10pm showing on a weeknight"
holy fuck, the things i would do to see a movie in theaters for $4 in my area. nearest theater to me costs like 16 bucks |
Rowan5215
10.19.20 | I didn't appreciate till the second time that Tom killing the seabird literally changes the wind which directly leads to all the bad shit that happens in the second half of the movie
BAD LUCK TA KILL A SEABIRD |

10.19.20 | really wish there was actually a sea monster or something spooky going on
technical masterpiece or not it felt like a boring chore |
Clumseee
10.19.20 | ps in terms of other recent long boring artsy farsty movies a roma is a 10 |
TheSonomaDude
10.19.20 | i wish it had a more focused screenplay. everything else about it, from the acting to the directing to the cinematography to the chilling atmosphere, is absolutely flawless. |
Ryus
10.19.20 | "really wish there was actually a sea monster or something spooky going on"

Flashmobba
10.19.20 | yea, felt like all the metaphors and symbols prevented the narrative from making any sense. And that dog scene was just stupid, as were many others. Pretty funny though, but I had super high expectations for a Dafoe-Pattinson freakout |
chemicalmarriage
10.19.20 | Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead Winslow! HAAARK! Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til’ ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more -- only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin’ tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye -- a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself -- forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.19.20 | "felt like all the metaphors and symbols prevented the narrative from making any sense."
the metaphors and symbols are crucial to and elevate the narrative. just because it isn't easy doesn't mean it doesn't make any sense. there's a lot of mythos to unpack, some of which i was unfamiliar with before watching so i had to look up some of that. but it certainly does make sense. |

10.19.20 | I'm very confused by people wanting something "more spooky" like the whole movie didn't build to a faceoff with a fucking Lovecraftian light lmao
did y'all want some CGI monsters and blood geysers or |
budgie
10.19.20 | any movie that doesnt build up to a faceoff with a lovecraftian monster is a bad movie |
Ryus
10.19.20 | ya rowan an actual sea monster wouldve been horrible haha |

Gyromania
10.19.20 | Easily one of the best movies from the 2010s |
Gyromania
10.19.20 | Also lovecraft horror isn't always right in your face. This is for sure one of the best depictions of a slow descent into madness and it has just enough mythology behind it to keep you guessing which I loved |
budgie
10.19.20 | zing |
Gyromania
10.19.20 | You didn't find any of it funny? To each their own. I feel like revealing any kind ot monster would have been a huge disservice to the mystery and atmosphere of the movie. |
