Demon of the Fall
05.02.24 | will add more later / ongoing etc. and probably won't bother with things that don't warrant commentary / further inspection
I'm losing track of myself a little here! |
budgie
05.02.24 | probably one of the best lists ive ever seen wow |
tectactoe
05.02.24 | Absolutely based for 7. Best Phil Elverum release as far as I'm concerned. |
Pheromone
05.02.24 | i care - either / or 3.4 i no longer care |
tectactoe
05.02.24 | Check DON'T WAKE ME UP next |
Demon of the Fall
05.02.24 | similar to your "Ys" rating Phero, call this revenge (3.4 is still decent enough!)
will do tect |
Demon of the Fall
05.02.24 | 20 up. There's a bunch of ratings I need to update and keep forgetting to - this is what the "from" additions are all about after all |
jrlikestodance
05.02.24 | Been getting into Deeds of Flesh myself, rules so hard |
Trifolium
05.02.24 | 9 YESSSSSSSS I agreeeeee! It's so understated and simple, yet there's so much to it too! Wholeheartedly agree, it's one of their best.
Also love the inclusion of 4 and 8. |
chemicalmarriage
05.02.24 | Holy fuck thank you |
myri14
05.02.24 | 18 and 20 are crazy good! |
cylinder
05.02.24 | nice, nice. you unlocked a memory with 13. ran into that album years ago and haven't thought about it since. maybe i'll check it again, i actually really dug the poetry part (i'm a word guy)
18-21 are all on my to-listen list as well. I LOVE Radigue's 'Jetsun Mila,' so I'm expecting to dig the Trilogie.
also agreed that the quieter moments on Sarmat are some of the band's most captivating. that part kinda near the middle where it's just the piano and those demonic ass vocals gives me chills every time |
cylinder
05.02.24 | hope 2 grows on you too, to me that album was always an example of perfection of its genre. |
Demon of the Fall
05.03.24 | yeah, I DO appreciate why #2 is well executed and important to some people. It was good enough to make the list at least! Early days anyway, as I've been been distracted by other folky things (mostly eternal Joanna Newsom rotation + of late, Lenker / Primrose) but it's a different flavour, so there's always room for more
13 is really interesting but I was admittedly rather lost / filtered by the poetry segment, lol (need to check again) |
DoofDoof
05.03.24 | Elliott Smith is the ultimate for personal connection/time and place association for me...so uh, hope you get there
Only thing I'll say is he really clicked as a late teens/early twenties favourite - maybe easier to click at that stage of life maybe :/ |
Demon of the Fall
05.03.24 | I could see that being true, hopefully I haven't missed the boat
It could also be a case of me generally preferring female voices in specific genres. I hope that's a barrier(?) I can overcome |
tectactoe
05.03.24 | +1 for ornette |
Demon of the Fall
05.15.24 | minor updates. Need to add a few more in the 'revisiting category' too |
Demon of the Fall
06.07.24 | 31-36 are recent and relevant listening experiences
didn't realise it has been a month since I was in here, probably missing some |
Trifolium
06.07.24 | Ooooh nice I still have to hear that Julee Cruise one. LOOOOVE her stuff with Hybrid. Amazing voice. |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.07.24 | Other than (probably) Just Mustard, 32-36 + 30 is a fire stretch
10/10 blurb for 16 (though cmon Unquestionable Presence is way more fun than most dm albums in its orbit) |
Demon of the Fall
06.07.24 | Yeah, it is fun admittedly, but I had comparatively little else to drop. A 'good 4' seems about right these days. Still Life got booted too
I probably have loads of old DM-adjacent 4s that can go too. The new 'spread' isn't yet finalised
and are you not a fan of Just Mustard then Johnny? |
gabba
06.07.24 | alright, not being of a folk/country person, but having seen the hype here for that Adrianne Lenker album I've gotta give it a go |
tectactoe
06.07.24 | 37 - based |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.12.24 | Just Mustard is very strictly-okay in my book
have been revisiting Sim City lately and jfc I think the middle third must have some of the highest highs Susumu Hirasawa ever hit. push that one up your homework list if you haven't already, no idea how it never swept the accolades people seem to have handed to Siren |
Demon of the Fall
06.12.24 | yeah, Mustard's Weds is in limbo (along with Thou)
Blue Rev promotion
Julee 4.5 incoming
ooh, not actually heard Sim City, will have to get on that!
I didn't get on with Siren like I did Kyuusai or Aurora |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.12.24 | Also revisited Siren last night and uhhh yeah easily the weakest of the four for me. Suffers from having two perfect songs (On Line Malaysia, Siam Lights) in an otherwise emphatically well-behaved tracklist. Sim City defs got the edge, some wondrous wondrous shit there |
tectactoe
06.12.24 | 40 - not based |
Demon of the Fall
06.12.24 | shall I add more jazz records to counterbalance? More incoming
yeah, you were never going to appreciate 40, lol (mildly surprised I do) |
tectactoe
06.12.24 | "appreciate" |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.12.24 | missed the last exit, grandpa |
Demon of the Fall
06.14.24 | J A Z Z !!!
I've bumped all of the threads like a good soldier, may add notes later, may not |
tectactoe
06.14.24 | Okay with 43 you are back on the based list. |
Demon of the Fall
06.14.24 | Blakey trending down (high 3.5 seems right)
Ada Rook down (high 3 seems right)
Dolphy trending up (may be a solid 4)
Coltrane / Sanders almost definitely solid 4s minimum |
bighubbabuddha
06.14.24 | Yeah I really like that Liturgy album, I know they get a lot of shit but they definitely broke new ground on that one :) |
Demon of the Fall
06.14.24 | yeah, the way it’s presented is certainly unique(ish) and you don’t see many people combining choral elements with totalism and / or avant garde black metal!
I also (admittedly) love how she triggers the purists, lol |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.14.24 | "Blakey trending down (high 3.5 seems right)
Ada Rook down (high 3 seems right)
Dolphy trending up (may be a solid 4)"
coward x3
|
Demon of the Fall
06.14.24 | x 3 … not sure on your calculations there
but yeah I’ll admit to the novelty of Ada Rook on listen #1 being a factor perhaps. Still, it’s cool
not really sure why you’d say that about Blakey / Dolphy so enlighten me. Dolphy was an unfamiliar sound and took some adjusting too. I’m not about to eulogise just yet, but it’s definitely on the way up |
Ryus
06.14.24 | 44 is sooo good |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.14.24 | is Moanin' isn't a baseline jazz 4.0, you're asking the wrong questions of the genre
and if Dolphy's goofball arrangements have the the answers you're pulling, might as well throw in the towel and hit the bench with the rest of the sunless jazz-as-thorny-performance-art saps well repped itt
yes you can like both and no that won't stop me from judging you
but 40 being less of a novelty record than 44 is a worthwhile hill to die on |
Hawks
06.14.24 | Literally came here to post exactly what Ryus just did lmao. |
Demon of the Fall
06.14.24 | 44 has a higher baseline of enjoyment so far, I’ll admit to it being a novelty but I can see it sticking
also trying not to just auto-4 every jazz album. It’s a process |
Demon of the Fall
06.14.24 | assuming you’ve heard (?) 43 that’s the real answer to satisfy your critique Johnny |
tectactoe
06.14.24 | 40 and 44 are both novelties, the difference is that the latter actually required talent |
Ryus
06.14.24 | ok b👴👴mer |
tectactoe
06.14.24 | To be clear, there are plenty of great albums devoid of substantial musical talent. That album, however, is not one of them. |
Demon of the Fall
06.26.24 | a fresh new batch is up! |
Demon of the Fall
07.08.24 | another batch / some pretty lazy updates but this is a casual log
A Silent Way trending (further) upwards
Ad Nauseam also
Midori is awesome
Ornette! is maybe best Ornette
etc. |
tectactoe
07.08.24 | Ornette! is indeed best Ornette (but he has so many great ones that it's mostly just splitting hairs). |
Demon of the Fall
07.25.24 | bump for my shiniest new 5!
(forgot to update this with other things, may add later) |
