09.04.19 | As a vegan (veinkidmeme.jpg), I like the idea of this list.
I'd add Converge on there: Kurt Ballou is vegan, most of the rest of the band is veggie (from what I understand)
Radiohead's kinda famous for promoting touring sustainability & Thom's veg
Andre 3k had/promoted interesting vegan/straight-edge beliefs during Outkast's heyday but has since fallen off the wagon
This is all I can think of off the top of my head. Crass is an honorable mention; they championed animal rights, workers rights, environmentalism, feminism, and the usual anarchical politics. However, I think their mocking of Christianity is kind of dated/ a product of its time. I'm not Christian, and I understand the anti-religion themes of anarcho-punk, just rubs me the wrong way. Have close friends who are Christian and use that to shape their lives real well and for the benefit of all beings.

09.04.19 | Thx Tb1114! There are a lot more vegetarians, vegans, animal right defenders etc. Usually in extreme music. |

09.04.19 | Welcome!
Refused, Rise Against, Propagandhi are other veg punk bands that come to mind. I'll be coming back when I think of more; I'm much more a punkhead than a metalhead. It is neat that there's a lot of vegs in extreme music. Something to be really passionate about |

09.04.19 | I am trying to go vegetarian for at least one of my two meals every day - but my lord has it made me really enjoy a lot of meat based meals when I get to them lol |
DungeonBoy
09.04.19 | you eat meat for breakfast every day dude? One meal seems, pretty doable |
DoofDoof
09.04.19 | Could have waited 20 more seconds for the edit. I only eat two meals and I don’t really eat meat based snacks. So there is effort there.
Problem is I’d still say most of my top 10 favourite meals contain meat. Vegetarian pizza might sneak in there as I don’t really appreciate meat toppings on pizza so much. |

DungeonBoy
09.04.19 | oh okay, that changes things then dude. Good luck with your endeavor! Moderation is the key to happiness and health |
DoofDoof
09.04.19 | Dungeon - yeah, I think it’s right that there is a push for people to consider eating less meat.
Unfortunately I still think I’d be cutting out too much to go full vegetarian - though it would be possible if I was careful with my diet. Meat is a shortcut to a lot of nutrition - I’ve heard about a lot of sick veggies like cancer sufferers being persuaded to eat meat again by doctors here as a shortcut to strengthening up their health. |
tectactoe
09.04.19 | let's also not forget that it is delicious |
DungeonBoy
09.04.19 | absolutely! and unless you have ethical reasons, you don't need to deprive yourself of the satisfaction that comes with eating it. The idea that meat is required for every meal to be complete though is simply not true, and the amount of animal protein that most people (at least Americans) seem to think they require is wildly skewed. |
DoofDoof
09.04.19 | 'and the amount of animal protein that most people (at least Americans) seem to think they require is wildly skewed.'
I don't think they think about it - they just eat what they want based on how tasty it is |

Yeah, because (((surprisingly))) humans are omnivore creatures: meat is somewhat essential, duh. |

09.05.19 | @PunchforPunch: that's just the average "I change my diet but don't really inform myself what it's doing to my body"-nonsense. You can live vegetarian and vegan without dying away or suffering. I mean, I don't fucking care what you eat. I eat meat myself every now and then. But I am sick and tired of those essays or blogs by people who are too stupid to google how to eat properly, because they blame it on the diet and not on their own stupidity |
Tb1114
09.05.19 | There are ways to be healthy eating meat, there are ways to be healthy eating vegan. There are unhealthy meat eaters and vegans, there are healthy meat eaters and vegans.
I believe living by example is the best method of advocating the vegan cause. Moralizing, accusations, and do-gooder degradation are inadequate techniques of causing real behavior change. I've been vegan for years now, but I've never told a single person to go vegan; yet I've still helped a couple handful of people go veggie & vegan by simply being a resource open to them when they come to me with questions. They see me live my life, they see me "thrive," they become inquisitive, and they know I'm not going belittle them.
There are many vegans who believe this manner of operation is mild and complicit, but in my experience I believe I've done much more good for the cause than harm.
As far as morality and ethics go, the science is pretty clear eating less meat is better for the environment. And it's pretty difficult to argue that between the two options of 1) "killing an innocent living being" & 2) "not killing an innocent living being" that option 1 is the more ethical choice.
/my two cents, I'm gonna probably regret the discussion following this comment. |
garas
09.05.19 | That conclusion is not 100% true. The closest to realitiy is what Tb1114 mentioned:
"...pretty clear eating ___less___ meat is better for the environment." So, in case if anyone missed it, the keyword here is: "L E S S" |

09.05.19 | There are just about ways to be healthy on a vegan diet but it involves the very unnatural reliance on additional supplements
Not convinced myself. Veggie I could just about do and wouldn’t be worried about my health.
If you have a diet you need to take non-food tablet style supplements that’s not a natural diet imo |

True that, like the sweet B12 vitamin & folic acid - as pills, for example.
"why in the world did anyone feature this to begin with lol" Exactly... |

garas
09.05.19 | Yeah, that's fact. I brought up pills just as an example. (But, for strict vegan that is the only option [at least, the only I know] to get B12 vitamins, becasue they don't eat eggs or any milk products.) |
EclipseInYourEyes
09.05.19 | you're welcome garas.
also: I want to mention that I always express my respect towards people who think about their food. I don't care what their conclusions are, but to realise that food is not something that magically appears in the supermarket is the most important step. What you do with it (where does it grow? how much water does it need? how much co2? were other beings harmed? and so on) is your thing. However, I don't like this boxing "oh I ate a sausage now I am not a vegetarian anymore". Screw that. I already love it if people willingly decide to take a meat free meal when I have lunch with them. Or when they say "usually I eat meat everyday, but now I will have one day without it". Why does it always have to 0 or 1? That's a point I totally hate about that discussion. |
DoofDoof
09.05.19 | Pescatarian diet would be a good one if the environmental/pollution factors weren't there - or maybe fish and insects too (similar to crustaceans anyway)
Look, I love fish, I keep tropical fish, beautiful creatures etc...but if you can humanely kill them with no suffering then really I don't buy the ethical dilemma for fish, crustaceans and insects.
Where does it end? "The mosquito is my friend - I shall not harm him even though he gives me malaria."
We tread on many tiny organisms every day - what are you going to do? Not move. Even in bed you might crush a dust mite fo' shame. |
