09.09.17 | the original movie is shit, clowns aren't scary, had no intentions to see this...
...but the critical reviews are overwhelmingly positive, not just from its target audience of 'lol clowns are scary' teens, and it's slowly starting to peak my interest |

09.09.17 | was really worried they would fumble this because the book is a favourite of mine, but goddamn they nailed it. if more horror movies understood that having likable lead characters is a basic requirement for watchability, we would be in a better world |

09.25.17 | Very fun movie, perfect level of grittiness/comedy. Big fan of the book so I was happy it was more true to it than the original movie. |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.25.17 | Yeah, I thought it was pretty awesome as well. The original adaptation was complete balls outside of Tim though, so it wasn't that impressive that it beat that one out. |
Kalopsia
09.25.17 | i had the LOWEST expectations for this movie, but agree with you on pretty much everything else.
horror movie remakes usually suck balls, but this was legit good. |
Thalassic
09.25.17 | I don't even think it's really a "horror movie" tho. It felt like an adventure movie with a horror twist. |
Thalassic
09.25.17 | A lot of creativity went into those "It apparition" scenes. Really hope they'll continue with these inventive, freaky It-saying-hello set pieces for the second part. There's a ton of possibility with this concept. |
Frippertronics
09.25.17 | it was good, but did it really do the book justice?
if part two is any good and they don't fuck up the final act, then yes. until then, i wouldn't say it did the source material justice JUST yet. |
TheSonomaDude
09.25.17 | Finally saw the damn movie, it wasn't bad. annoying tonal shifts and generic jumpscares were the biggest downside to the film.
The characters that were actually explored and had purpose were all likable, but there were a few characters that seemingly had nothing to do. Like the jewish kid and the black kid I swear only had like 3 lines, and the only thing the black kid does is get beat up. the other characters are all great and that one kid, the one who grows up to be a comedian, genuinely got a lot of great laughs out of me.
The jumpscares were such a downer. fuck that shit. it isn't scary. Pennywise is a demonic shapeshifting alien clown who eats kids, that's already fucking terrifying as it is. every single scare was so predictable and lazy...the screeching violins ascend in the background as a character approaches something fishy...the violins suddenly stop....BAM LOUD NOISE SCARY JUMPSCARE AHHHHH!!! generic shit. IMO the film would've been much scarier had it focused on the paranoia of Pennywise's pressense. The entire book was about the lingering effects of fear and how it can truly distort and fuck up people, and I think the director should've honed in more on that aspect instead of sticking with hollywood jumpscares
I had issues with the tonal shifts too. This wouldve been much better as a straight forward horror film instead of a psuedo-comedy Monster Squad film. Even Monster House, which was an animated PG rated film, balanced this aspect better imo
the film is visually stunning tho, and i thought it was extremely well paced for a 146 minute long movie. felt like it was barely over 90 minutes IMO. decent movie but not a horror classic, not even a modern horror classic. 7/10 for me and judging by how my friends are going nuts over it, i'll have no problem seeing it again in theaters. it's good but not without its flaws. Extra points for having Anthrax and Exodus on the soundtrack M/ M/ M/ |
Sowing
09.25.17 | Loved the movie |
superluminals
09.25.17 | What's a modern horror classic? Oh I'd just LOVE to know |
Astral Abortis
09.25.17 | I wouldn't say it had generic jumpscares. It had real jumpscares. Generic jumpscares that riddle so many modern horror films is when there's a build up and bang and you shoot your wad because it turns out it was their friend banging on the window or something. All the jumpscares in It are based around Pennywise and the fears of the children so there's legitimate payoff for the tension created. You don't become immediately pacified after each one because a threat still pursues after each one.
There are astronomical differences between a good and bad jumpscare. And jumpscares aren't always bad. |
TheSonomaDude
09.25.17 | Get Out
It Follows
The Descent
The Conjuring
Frailty
The Witch
|
superluminals
09.25.17 | It follows and the witch, how predictable, not only are those two not scary they're boring too.
The conjuring is good tho. |
Astral Abortis
09.25.17 | Hush was a pretty good modern horror film. I don't see many new ones because I'm mainly a fan of old horror films but I can also agree that It Follows is pretty great if not for a few key things they fucked up (essentially the entire second half of the movie but w/e) |
Astral Abortis
09.25.17 | But if you're over 18 and still looking for a film to legitimately scare you then i don't know what to say since film just stops being a scary medium after a while. |
hal1ax
09.25.17 | Fucking hated the witch |
TheSonomaDude
09.25.17 | I will say the scene the decapitated soldier was genuinely well done, excellent camerawork that had great build up and a terrifying payoff. The slideshow in the garage was thrilling as well. Cant really say much about the rest of them.
Jumpscares as a whole are annoying, even if they are "real". Just because the jumpscare actually had Pennywise in it doesnt make it good imo. Jumpscares are just a cheap gimmick to catch people off guard. I don't think It needed any jumpscares because the film is about the lingering concept of fear and how it manipulates people. A wiser directorial decision would've been capture more of that aspect. The jumpscare formula is extremely thin and predictable and i rarely does it ever work for me. i can see it coming from a mile away and i just slump back in my chair and sigh while waiting for the inevitable loud CHUNGGG noise. |
TheSonomaDude
09.25.17 | It Follows is a masterpiece and is better than this film is almost every single way imo |
superluminals
09.25.17 | I'm not looking for something to scare me, since horror films usually make me laugh. I'm mostly interested in non cheesy believable concepts/special effects, good acting and good pacing. If the movie isn't entertaining scene for scene it's a failure in my eyes. |
superluminals
09.25.17 | It follows pool scene(ending) is laughable |
polyrhythm
09.25.17 | Could have used a couple fewer jump scares, and there was some questionable CGI... like in that weird gangnam style bit. Also, pause the film as Pennywise bites off Georgie's arm and try not to laugh.
Other than that, I loved IT. Great visually, well-paced, well-acted, very likeable characters. An improvement on the 90s version across the board. Hyped for Part Two |
Astral Abortis
09.25.17 | Yeah look It Follows started out super strong but they fucked it up so badly in the end that it really disappointed me. Still a great film but always will be a disappointment in my eyes. It was better.
As for the Witch I couldn't even make it past the twenty minute mark I was bored to fucking tears. |
polyrhythm
09.25.17 | The first half of It Follows was amazing, second half ugh
The Witch was 5/5
Get Out was 5/5
Descent was 5/5
Conjuring was like 3/5 |
Astral Abortis
09.25.17 | Man everybody keeps mentioning the It jumpscares but if I'm honest I barely remember many of them and the film never made me jump at all |

09.25.17 | "As for the Witch I couldn't even make it past the twenty minute mark I was bored to fucking tears"
seriously one of my favourite films of all time |
TheSonomaDude
09.25.17 | It Follow's lackluster ending comes from a lack of budget, which as an independent filmmaker myself is easily understandable. The film was made on a budget of $1million and it's remarkable what they got done on that. Writer/Director David Robert Mitchell had a much bigger ending in mind but simply didn't have the budget to do it, which is what happens sometimes. I personally didn't even mind it even before finding out about the budget or backstory tbh |
Astral Abortis
09.25.17 | Lol I guess that'll do it. Word to the wise, always sit in the upper middle-back or a cinema. |
Astral Abortis
09.25.17 | It's not just the ending or anything budgetary. I'm mainly talking about how they fucked the plot and turned the It that Follows into a joke by the end. Especially the scene where you actually see it raping the guy next door. Wooooorst. Never actually SHOW that stuff. Leave it to our imaginations that do a way better job of freaking us out. |
polyrhythm
09.25.17 | it was mainly how overloud and distorted the sound system was tbh, which would've been about the same wherever I sat |
brainmelter
09.25.17 | the trailers leading up to release are super hilarious, despite the positive reviews I think I'll pass on this one |

09.26.17 | The only jumpscare I remember from IT is when the boy with glasses falls from the second story to the 1st story of the abandoned house and breaks his arm, the clown suddenly appears from no where and kidnaps the girl( one of the best jumpscares I've ever seen since they're usually expected, this one was so sudden and actually scared me.) |

09.26.17 | I definitely wanna see this sometime soon, I need to see what the fuck that scene with him dancing stonefaced is about |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | The biggest one I remember was in the girl's bathroom with her dad and when she turns around it is there and then cuts to a new scene. I don't even remember a loud noise or bang for it. It was nicely done. |
superluminals
09.26.17 | I really liked the bathroom scene with the blood, maybe it was the angle or something but it looked awesome.
Oh and get out is awful too |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | "I definitely wanna see this sometime soon, I need to see what the fuck that scene with him dancing stonefaced is about"
You'll get about as much context in-film as you do out of it. He's a clown. He dances. That's why he's called Pennywise the Dancing Clown. |
TheSonomaDude
09.26.17 | that was one of the best scenes in the film |
Hawks
09.26.17 | It's amazing yeah. |
TheSleepys
09.26.17 | I liked it overall. I didn't like the end or the second half as much. I felt like the abuse the kids faced was scarier than pennywise. |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | "I felt like the abuse the kids faced was scarier than pennywise."
Literally the entire point of the film
I've seen so many people complain about how Pennywise is less scary the more you see him and how redundant he feels by the end of the film, but like...that's the entire point. That's the plot. The point of the whole story is that Pennywise feeds on the true fear that these kids experience in the real world, these real life experiences that tear them apart with anxiety and dread and pain. But when they overcome their own demons Pennywise becomes a useless, pathetic shell that isn't scary at all. In the end he becomes just pitiful to even watch the harder he tries. It's great. |
Rowan5215
09.26.17 | not to be that guy but I feel like people who wish it was a 'straight horror' film are missing the point. the book is not a straight horror at all. growing up is way scarier than supernatural clown monsters which is literally the whole point |
NordicMindset
09.26.17 | How could you not include Pennywise on this list |
Hawks
09.26.17 | "not to be that guy but I feel like people who wish it was a 'straight horror' film are missing the point."
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. |
Rowan5215
09.26.17 | this is my favourite King book so I feel qualified to say if they'd made a straight horror film (removing the comedy that defines a lot of the kid's personalities) it would have been fucking garbage. if we don't relate to and empathise with the kids you have no story here. the reason the book is so long is because King sympathetically and carefully gives us chapters inside all their heads - and the heads of characters lesser writers would probably just give one or two lines, like Stan's and Bill's wives - to add dimensionality. |

09.26.17 | All about The Witch, now. That's my favorite horror movie of the past several years. |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | And yeah, the Ring fucked up some kids at my private school back in the day. |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | I'll have to try and sit through the Witch again, because everyone raves about it but I was waiting for it to get interesting and it was just so shit |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | Yeah, I can see that movie not being for everyone. I was an English major in college so I have a boner for the dialogue. Also the acting all around is ace, the atmosphere is so intense, tension is so tight throughout, and I find the scary imagery to be incredibly effective. It just feels like I'm reading a great horror short story.
There were some other great ones I've seen recently, but I'm completely blanking right now. Should probably make a list one of these days. |

hal1ax
09.26.17 | agree with hawks / snox tbh. absolutely detested that film |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | @Hawks - you're thinking of It Follows.

superluminals
09.26.17 | Ya ur not alone hawks

Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | Even though It Follows was super disappointing overall, it still has one of my favourite scenes ever in a horror film. That one long scene of them all sitting at the beach while It walks slowly closer and closer the entire time and there's not music or anything building it up, it's just a completely normal scene until BAM fucking brilliant.
anyway, as for recent horror films I think I mentioned earlier I quite enjoyed Hush. That was really good. And It, obviously. I can't really think of many more right now, I tend to stick to 60s-80s when it comes to horror. |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | OH WAIT duh how could I forget: The Cabin In the Woods. Amazing film. |
Hawks
09.26.17 | It Follows was boring as hell too. IT was honestly one of the best horror movies I've seen recently. Thought the new Annabelle movie was really great too tbh. The Conjuring series has been pretty consistently awesome so far with the exception of the first Annabelle movie which was awful. |
TheSonomaDude
09.26.17 | i see CITW more as a comedy but it's definitely a great movie, so is Hush |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | The Final Girls was a really fun movie. The Descent ruled, but I'm aging myself because it's like 11 years old. Don't Breathe, most of The Babadook (not a fan of the last 15 minutes or so), and probably something else |
Hawks
09.26.17 | The Descent and The Babadook are both really great too agreed. |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | I didn't love Hush. It was OK |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | "i see CITW more as a comedy but it's definitely a great movie"
all horror films are comedies
"The Final Girls was a really fun movie"
That one bored me to tears. Might be because it was riffing entirely on Friday the 13th, which is equally boring. |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | Oh fuck me, I forgot about Get Out |
neekafat
09.26.17 | Loved it too dude, can't wait for part two! |
Hawks
09.26.17 | I dug Hush once it really got going. |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | I don't know how far you guys wanna go back but if you're all saying The Descent then I might go ahead and say The Mist. |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | @Astral - WHAT? Final Girls had me and my friends crying of laughter - and it definitely wasn't just Friday the 13th - a ton of the humor was just on general tropes of horror in general |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | I enjoyed It Follows for its John Carpenter-isms, but it lost the plot in the second half. |
TheSonomaDude
09.26.17 | Jeepers Creepers 3 comes out in theaters tomorrow lol |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | @DarkSide: I didn't find it very funny, it just seemed like a spoof on Friday the 13th but with extra, self-aware characters that deterred the best thing about Friday the 13th: the murders. |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | Jeepers Creepers is definitely getting 100% on Rotten Tomatoes starting tomorrow and it will never drop a single percent |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | @ Astral - Damn. Well, I will say that it was really weird that it wasn't rated R |

TheSonomaDude
09.26.17 | the first JC film starts off excellent but consistently gets worse with every 10 minutes passing. could've been a truly superb horror film had the entire film kept the same intensity as the first 10 minutes.
the second one is complete shit. the third will probably be shit too |

09.26.17 | Yesssss Snox for sure The Mist is one of my favorites too. m/

09.26.17 | idk if don't breathe is really a horror movie or not but it's really good |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.26.17 | Found was...eh. I liked parts of it, but it was a bit too amateurish for my taste. Two of my friends love the hell out of it, though. Have not seen Headless though.
I did see The Woman, Deadgirl, Raw and a couple other very unpleasant ones recently |
Hawks
09.26.17 | Not really too recent, but I recommend you guys watch High Tension if you haven't. One of the most fucked up horror movies I've ever seen. |
Astral Abortis
09.26.17 | I'll have to write down a bunch of these newer ones because I haven't even seen The Babadook, The Conjuring, Get Out, etc.
