| My Personal Ranking of Opeth’s Discography
I’ve decided to go ahead and do this in lieu of reviewing Pale Communion and Sorceress, as I struggled to find much to say about Heritage, and that problem did not get better with the next two. Also worth noting is that this is not meant to be objective in the slightest, this is just how I feel about the albums at hand. | 12 | | Opeth Heritage
I have nothing to say about this album. It makes me irritable. I’ve already reviewed it. Let’s move on. | 11 | | Opeth Pale Communion
Even less to say about this one. It’s only above Heritage because I prefer the production. Otherwise, it may as well be the same album. | 10 | | Opeth Sorceress
This one actually has some songs I like (Will O the Wisp, The Wilde Flowers). But it then counters this by having the most boring Opeth songs ever. | 9 | | Opeth Morningrise
I feel bad putting this one so low, but I just don’t listen to it a lot anymore. A fantastic album, but one I don’t return to very often. | 8 | | Opeth Ghost Reveries
Another I feel bad about putting so low, but there’s only so many spaces at the top. A great album that has some of my absolute favorite songs, but for me, the latter half is a bit of a slog. I’ll get some heat for this, but I can only be honest: | 7 | | Opeth Orchid
Another I’ll probably get flack for, but this time for being so high. And I can only explain it by saying it has all the charm in the world. It sounds like a bunch of Iron Maiden fanboys got together to record death metal. It sounds youthful and exciting, and I love that. | 6 | | Opeth Watershed
The most interesting album of the group, to me. One I listen to a lot, and respect the hell out of, but one I have a bit of a disconnect with for whatever reason. It doesn’t prevent enjoyment at all, but it does keep me from liking it as much as my favorites. | 5 | | Opeth Blackwater Park
The band’s biggest album, and where I started off with the band. Its luster has worn a bit, but not near enough to keep it away from my favorite albums of all time. | 4 | | Opeth Damnation
The Opeth album I have the most emotional attachment to. Moving and beautiful, and technically excellent in just about every way. A masterpiece. | 3 | | Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse
These last three are pretty hard to narrow down, almost being interchangeable for me. But MAYH delivers a lot of my favorite Opeth songs, and a large emotional attachment, as well as my favorite vocals. | 2 | | Opeth Deliverance
Cuz why not hit ‘em with some controversy? Anyway, I’ve listened to this album more than any other Opeth album. It’s my white noise album, I pretty much throw it on whenever I need to hear music, and it’s also one I listen to a lot when I’m sad, as the harsh soundscapes complement that pretty well for me. Underrated, but I understand why most people wouldn’t put it this high. | 1 | | Opeth Still Life
A masterpiece. Every song is flawless. It has my favorite everything from Opeth, except vocals (which are still fantastic, I just prefer the MAYH approach in that field). Favorite Opeth song (The Moor), favorite production, favorite song structures, favorite way that the songs flow, favorite instrumentation. It’s just real good. More than earns that 4.5 average user rating. | |

10.23.17 | nice list. I agree that deliverance is one of their best. It was my favorite back when I was super into Opeth | CygnusX1
10.23.17 | Interesting choices for top 3. Kinda weird seeing 8 and 5 so low | BlackwaterPork
10.23.17 | Ummm | Slowburner
10.23.17 | Just for future reference, any comments that read something like ‘number 8 should be above number 6’ or whatever will be deleted. You add nothing to the conversation when you post this shit. Comments like CygnusX1’s are perfectly acceptable. Just don’t be a jackass, maybe try to start a conversation as opposed to telling me where I should put albums on a list that isn’t yours. | Demon of the Fall
10.23.17 | List sucks, in wrong order. Number 9 should be above number 2. Yeah, sucks. You know nothing, not worthy. | Slowburner
10.23.17 | I ain’t fallin for that bait, Demon of the Fall | Spacesh1p
10.23.17 | This is an important list. | Egarran
10.23.17 | Agree with most of it.
I too feel the disconnect with Watershed. Pretty sure it's that keyboard.
And all lists should be subjective. | TheWalkinDude
10.23.17 | *insert snooty comment about how you're wrong about a subjective list* | Egarran
10.24.17 | Imo, adding a personal anecdote to why you like an album is infinitely better than some attempt at objectivity.
Opeth seems well suited to be a soundtrack to life chapters. |
