| My Top 10 '70s Prog Rock Bands
There are three bands who should have made this list but didn't purely due to genre questions. The Who have prog elements (especially the rock operas and Townshend's use of keyboards), but they're more of a hard rock band. Pink Floyd also has prog rock elements, but they're more of a psychedelic rock band. The closest call was Rush, who are definitely part prog rock, but also part hard rock and part math rock. | 1 | | Jethro Tull Thick as a Brick
I love their folk rock elements. | 2 | | Yes Close to the Edge
I love their classical rock influences. | 3 | | Procol Harum Shine On Brightly
I love their epic lyrics. | 4 | | Strawbs Grave New World
Another great folky prog rock band. | 5 | | Renaissance Turn of the Cards
I love Annie Haslam's sublime voice, and their use of the piano. | 6 | | King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King
I love their melodic side more than their harsher jazz side. | 7 | | Kansas Leftoverture
I love Leftoverture and Point of Know Return. | 8 | | The Moody Blues Every Good Boy Deserves Favour
A little mawkish at times, but also often beautiful, and they had a ridiculously consistent run up through Seventh Sojourn. | 9 | | Emerson, Lake and Palmer Pictures at an Exhibition
Certainly bombastic, but Emerson (along with Rick Wakeman) was one of the two greatest prog rock keyboard players of the period, and Lake had one of the smoothest voices in all of rock. | 10 | | Hawkwind Warrior on the Edge of Time
Only really started listening to them in the last year, so they could move up on this list. | |

04.14.19 | I know that the most glaring omission is Peter Gabriel's Genesis. But while they certainly had some stuff that I liked, they were just a little too out there too often for my taste. | Casavir
04.14.19 | Needs Van der Graaf. | CugnoBrasso
04.14.19 | Casavir said all there was to be said. | SitarHero
04.14.19 | Diva, man, did you just call Rush math rock? | teamster
04.14.19 | Agree - Rush are not math rock at all. | Casavir
04.14.19 | [2] | Morningrise767
04.14.19 | Rush math rock??? Wot the fuk | ArsMoriendi
04.14.19 | Needs Zappa | Divaman
04.14.19 | OK, settle down gang. I obviously misused the term "math rock". My point was that Rush isn't a pure progressive rock band in the same way that bands like Yes or King Crimson are.
Casavir, Van der Graaf is one of those bands that I need to catch up on. I'm dubious as to whether they'll crack this list, but two years ago, I would have said the same about Hawkwind, so you never know.
Ars, Zappa is just too inconsistent for my taste. (And he was a whole bunch of things besides progressive.) "We're Only in It for the Money" was one of my favorites growing up, though. | Casavir
04.14.19 | Well, comparatively speaking, Rush did come from a hard rock background initially but I don't think that's worth exclusion. Especially if Hawkwind somehow counts. | Divaman
04.14.19 | Like I said, Rush was a close call. If you want Rush on the list, they'd fit right after Procol, and Hawkwind would get bumped. For whatever reason, I just don't immediately think "progressive rock" when I think of Rush. | SitarHero
04.14.19 | It's interesting that you think of Rush that way but not Kansas. Is there any particular reason why you think Kansas is more prog than proggy hard rock? | TheMightyScoop
04.14.19 | "I love their melodic side more than their harsher jazz side."

"My point was that Rush isn't a pure progressive rock band in the same way that bands like Yes or King Crimson are."
no | Divaman
04.15.19 | I feel like Rush is way heavier than Kansas, Sitar.
Rush really feels to me like the precursor for progressive metal. | mardin65
04.15.19 | Needs Caravan | ADLutz
04.15.19 | and what about Gentle Giant?! Most underrated prog band ever! | Jethro42
04.15.19 | Nice list, Diva. It's hard to condense a top 10...i'd be curious about your top 20. From 1 to 6, it's a top 10 for me. From 7 to 10, it's a top 20. ELP would be the eleventh or something.
Mine would include two bands from my hometown; Maneige and Harmonium. Also at least one band from Italy; Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). I'd also add Camel, Gentle Giant and Supertramp, even if the latter is a bit pop.
i pretty much agree with your point of you about Rush; they are at some point the precursors for progressive metal, and it's hard to place them into a top 10 '70s prog rock bands, but from 2112 to Signals, there are plenty of pure progressive - epic songs. | Jethro42
04.15.19 | point of view*
sorry. | Casavir
04.15.19 | Placing them in a top ten is more than acceptable given how much influence they had and how well they lasted into the '80s in contrast to many other bands in the same genre. | Jethro42
04.15.19 | Also;
No Pink Floyd, okay but no Genesis on a top 10, it's very rare... | Divaman
04.15.19 | Yep. Remember, though, this is all personal taste. I'd have typed "Favorite 10", but "Top" has fewer characters. I'd have to think about a Top 20. | Jethro42
04.15.19 | Don't get me wrong, it's not a critic, my comment was a matter of taste from me too. As for a top 20, i think it's easier to do. It was in that sense that I meant it. But yeah, I'd be curious about your top 20 for sure. | Uzumaki
04.15.19 | Seconded about a Top 20. | wham49
04.15.19 | Is anybody a pure prog rock band or started as one I guess, nobody did | Divaman
04.16.19 | Yeah, I think I'm gonna pass on going to 20. Unless I include The Who, Floyd and Rush, and add Rick Wakeman as a solo artist as well, there would be too big a drop-off in how much I enjoy 1-10 and how much I enjoy 11-20. |
