Divaman: My Top 10 '70s Prog Rock Bands

Divaman 04.14.19	I know that the most glaring omission is Peter Gabriel's Genesis. But while they certainly had some stuff that I liked, they were just a little too out there too often for my taste.

Divaman 04.14.19	OK, settle down gang. I obviously misused the term "math rock". My point was that Rush isn't a pure progressive rock band in the same way that bands like Yes or King Crimson are. Casavir, Van der Graaf is one of those bands that I need to catch up on. I'm dubious as to whether they'll crack this list, but two years ago, I would have said the same about Hawkwind, so you never know. Ars, Zappa is just too inconsistent for my taste. (And he was a whole bunch of things besides progressive.) "We're Only in It for the Money" was one of my favorites growing up, though.
Casavir 04.14.19	Well, comparatively speaking, Rush did come from a hard rock background initially but I don't think that's worth exclusion. Especially if Hawkwind somehow counts.
Divaman 04.14.19	Like I said, Rush was a close call. If you want Rush on the list, they'd fit right after Procol, and Hawkwind would get bumped. For whatever reason, I just don't immediately think "progressive rock" when I think of Rush.

Divaman 04.15.19	I feel like Rush is way heavier than Kansas, Sitar. Rush really feels to me like the precursor for progressive metal.

Jethro42 04.15.19	Nice list, Diva. It's hard to condense a top 10...i'd be curious about your top 20. From 1 to 6, it's a top 10 for me. From 7 to 10, it's a top 20. ELP would be the eleventh or something. Mine would include two bands from my hometown; Maneige and Harmonium. Also at least one band from Italy; Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). I'd also add Camel, Gentle Giant and Supertramp, even if the latter is a bit pop. i pretty much agree with your point of you about Rush; they are at some point the precursors for progressive metal, and it's hard to place them into a top 10 '70s prog rock bands, but from 2112 to Signals, there are plenty of pure progressive - epic songs.

Divaman 04.16.19	Yeah, I think I'm gonna pass on going to 20. Unless I include The Who, Floyd and Rush, and add Rick Wakeman as a solo artist as well, there would be too big a drop-off in how much I enjoy 1-10 and how much I enjoy 11-20.
