My Top 10 '70s Prog Rock Bands

There are three bands who should have made this list but didn't purely due to genre questions. The Who have prog elements (especially the rock operas and Townshend's use of keyboards), but they're more of a hard rock band. Pink Floyd also has prog rock elements, but they're more of a psychedelic rock band. The closest call was Rush, who are definitely part prog rock, but also part hard rock and part math rock.
1Jethro Tull
Thick as a Brick

I love their folk rock elements.
2Yes
Close to the Edge

I love their classical rock influences.
3Procol Harum
Shine On Brightly

I love their epic lyrics.
4Strawbs
Grave New World

Another great folky prog rock band.
5Renaissance
Turn of the Cards

I love Annie Haslam's sublime voice, and their use of the piano.
6King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

I love their melodic side more than their harsher jazz side.
7Kansas
Leftoverture

I love Leftoverture and Point of Know Return.
8The Moody Blues
Every Good Boy Deserves Favour

A little mawkish at times, but also often beautiful, and they had a ridiculously consistent run up through Seventh Sojourn.
9Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Pictures at an Exhibition

Certainly bombastic, but Emerson (along with Rick Wakeman) was one of the two greatest prog rock keyboard players of the period, and Lake had one of the smoothest voices in all of rock.
10Hawkwind
Warrior on the Edge of Time

Only really started listening to them in the last year, so they could move up on this list.
