| Favorite Versions of The Doctor (Doctor Who)
These are just my personal favorites, not any attempt to objectively name the best versions. I've left out The War Doctor, because, well, eff The War Doctor. And I haven't listed people like Peter Cushing from the Doctor Who movie, or possible future Doctors like The Valeyard. | 12 | | Paul Simon Paul Simon
Paul McGann (The Eighth Doctor)
Really more of an incomplete than anything else. Seemed like he could have been good, but just had that one lousy TV movie. | 11 | | Colin Hay Next Year People
Colin Baker (The Seventh Doctor)
I actually liked him better than a lot of people did, and I thought his first season was pretty good. But his second season had atrocious writing, his outfit was god-awful, and the personality of his Doctor was pretty offputting, so he got the sack. | 10 | | William Control Revelations: The Black
William Hartnell (The First Doctor)
He started it all, but he was pretty stiff, and for the first few seasons, he wasn't even the main character on his own show. | 9 | | Matt Molloy Shadows On Stone
Matt Smith (The Eleventh Doctor)
Fan girls will hate me for this. But while he had his moments, he was just too damned silly -- think about the scene where he accidentally wound up stuck in a space suit backwards. Ugh. Amy and Rory were good companions, though, and he interacted very well with kids. | 8 | | Jon Brion Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jon Pertwee (The Third Doctor)
A bit stiff, but kind of fun. His character was clearly a reflection of the times, and was meant to appeal to some of the same audience as Patrick Macnee and Diana Riggs' show "The Avengers". The only Doctor who was trapped on Earth for a significant period of time. | 7 | | Drayco McCoy Ratchet Ass House Party Vol. 1
Sylvestor McCoy (The Eighth Doctor)
Sort of a throwback to the Patrick Troughton Doctor after the dark Peter Davison/Colin Baker years. Another underrated Doctor IMO. | 6 | | Patrick Moraz The Story of I
Patrick Troughton (The Second Doctor)
From the little bit I saw of him, he was excellent. Too bad he had more missing episodes than any of the other Doctors. | 5 | | Peter Gabriel So
Peter Capaldi (The Twelfth Doctor)
Very underrated. He took the Clara Oswald character, who had been lifeless working with Matt Smith, and built a real chemistry with her. And his relationship with Missy was fascinating. | 4 | | David Bowie Changesonebowie
David Tennant (The Tenth Doctor)
Another actor who took the character and made it his own. He worked with a variety of companions over his five-year reign, and when he cried out, "I don't want to go!", I understood completely. I didn't want him to go either. | 3 | | Tom Waits Heartattack and Vine
Tom Baker (The Fourth Doctor)
The longest running Doctor, and until David Tennant, most people's favorite. Some of his later seasons were pretty lame, but he was mostly excellent, and his chemistry with Sarah Jane was one of the best Doctor/companion relationships ever. | 2 | | Christopher Lee Charlemagne: The Omens of Death
Christopher Eccleston (The Ninth Doctor)
Responsible for the fact that the revised series was a success. I really hate that he only had one season, although I know that was the actor's own choice. I'll always remember him fondly. | 1 | | Peter, Paul and Mary Around the Campfire
Peter Davision (The Fifth Doctor)
He was my first Doctor, and you usually like your first one best. The shows were also pretty dark for most of his reign, which I liked -- how many times did they kill off the whole cast of an episode except for The Doctor and his companions, and they even killed off a companion. | |

01.07.18 | The actor I most wish had gotten a chance to play The Doctor -- Danny DeVito. | ChoccyPhilly
01.07.18 | Chris Ecc is my favourite but I stopped watching after Matt Smith because of shitty writing | Rowan5215
01.08.18 | I hate the tenth doctor with a fiery passion. Tennant did good work but the characterisation was unbelievably awful
eleven, seven, nine are the top 3 | zakalwe
01.08.18 | It’s about time the Dr was a fat lezza. Shaved haircut the lot. | theNateman
01.08.18 | I’m looking forward to 13. My wife and I are rewatching the whole new Who series to catch up. | bloc
01.08.18 | Never watched this show, but let me see more of that Karen Gillan good god | Sinternet
01.08.18 | i'd just edge tennant over eccleston because i think tennant was more doctor-ish for me, other than that gotta be tom baker | Divaman
01.08.18 | I've got mixed feelings about 13. I'm hoping they're not doing it for all pc reasons, but I liked Whittaker in Broadchurch, so I'll wait and see. | TheSpirit
01.08.18 | Matt Smith was my first and is probably my favorite. I love how he was silly, but you could always see some pain behind his eyes. I personally liked his interactions w/Clara, and obviously he was great w/Amy and Rory. He and David Tennant (my second favorite) were hands down the most "aggressive" Doctors, which I like. I really LOVED Peter Capaldi's first season, I still to this day pretty am confused as to why it's not well liked. His following two seasons were far inferior IMO.
ANYWAY, great show, excited to see Whittaker take the helm. |
