Hip Hop Digs 10/9
1Soul Scream
The Deep

Definition of mid-90s boom bap with an especially aquatic sound from Japan. This adds layers to the mythos of 1996 in hip hop history for just how many classics dropped that year. I ripped this straight from the rym Japan hip hop chart and it certainly does not disappoint.
2Att Will
Do It Att Will

Classic Compton hip hop from 1993. This guy almost signed to Death Row but ended up not for one reason or another. The track "The Hoe Hopper" was remade by Dr. Dre and Snoop and stands as one of the most well known leaks from the Death Row period and it was inspired by the similar track on this album. But the quality undoubtedly runs through the whole thing so for anyone looking to scratch an LA gangsta rap itch, definitely check this.
3Hussein Fatal
In the Line of Fire

This is the first solo album from any of 2Pac's Outlawz and as far as I know, is by far the highest quality. Fatal was always the greatest rapper in the group as far as straight bars were concerned and it transferred perfectly into this distinctly 98 East Coast album that toes the line between mainstream and underground sounds. Where the rest of the group couldn't figure out actual songwriting or find good beats and features, Hussein found the help he needed and created a terrific and unique album.
4Big Tray Deee
Malice

The immediate and most striking thought that will always first come to mind to someone with the contextual knowledge of Tray Deee's show-stealing features throughout the mid 90s is how identical he sounds in every verse and album he makes in the current day to back then. Since his release from prison last decade, Tray Deee did not waste any time building a solo catalogue he lacked beforehand. 2023's Malice is an incredibly valid and arguably greatest addition to his solo career with its forthright intention of being Hard As Fuck. This is west coast to the fullest with no slacking in any verse on this thing. Tray Deee is hungry as he was in 94 when he first hit the scene with Snoop Dogg and commands albums in 2023 like his 10 year bid or any other advancement of time never happened.
5Lil Pigg Penn
The Hogg In Me

I'd say Sacramento is generally known within the hip hop scene as a place to find the darker end of the spectrum of gangsta rap, with artists like Brotha Lynch Hung and C-Bo making big names for themselves making aggressive but relenting albums and prolific appearances all over the coast. But looking deeper into the scene, you begin to find artists with very hypnotic and swampy sounds like P-Folks and Young Dre D whose nightmarish soundscapes always persist for the entire runtimes. Lil Pigg Penn shows a combination of the polar sides of Sac hip hop with solid and complimentary raps but exceptional and satisfying beats underpinning his verses with funky darkness that represent the striking album cover.
