[Round 2] Decode a Decade Rec Comp
1The Beatles
Abbey Road

Round 2: 1960's

Pick any song released between January 1, 1960 and December 31, 1969 and I'll listen to it, rate it, and write about. I will eliminate the two lowest rated songs.

You must have been in the previous round to rec a song for this round.
2The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Electric Ladyland

All Along The Watchtower - I think I have heard this actually, well, part of it. I’ve meant to listen to this album for the longest time but never got around to it. Pretty solid 60’s rock with some great guitar playing.

3Phil Ochs
All The News That's Fit to Sing

Pleasures of the Harbor - When I think of 60’s music, this is the type of thing my mind initially goes too. Folk with some beautiful orchestration in the background. Phil ochs has a very clear and easy-to-listen-to voice. I’m not sure what the song is really about but it sounds very nostalgic which as some know is an instant win for me.

4Strawberry Alarm Clock
Incense and Peppermints

Papa Universe

Incense and Peppermints - This is very uhh strange. I like that it’s trying to weird but it almost sounds like it’s just being weird to be weird. I don’t know. This wasn’t my thing. Sure, it was catchy, but it made no sense.

Chicago Transit Authority

Listen - This was pretty short for all it was trying to accomplish. Nothing about it kept me engaged or interested, it just kinda happened. You know? The break to an instrumental halfway through was what made it a less good song because had it stuck to having singing it could’ve been fine.

6The United States of America
The United States of America

American Metaphysical Circus - This was probably one of the weirdest songs I’ve ever heard. Granted, I don’t actively seek out weird music but it was definitely enjoyable. It actually did sound like weird, messed up circus and the female vocals helped. Very strange my friend, I don’t really know how to explain it so I’ll just stop lol.

7The Byrds
The Notorious Byrd Brothers

Eight Miles High - I might get destroyed for this but this just sounds like your standard 60’s rock and roll. The parts where there was singing was good but the parts where it was just instrumental were not good enough to keep me entertained.

8Big Brother And The Holding Company
Cheap Thrills

Ball and Chain - I’m sorry these write-ups are so poor but i honestly don’t have much to say about a lot of these songs. This was nice enough to listen to but it honoestly just kinda sounded like background music, or what plays on the speakers at a record store… which I guess is background music lol. It was fine and I didn’t mind the length because this is all I’m doing but yeah this was also fine.

9Gal Costa

Não identificado - Ok, THIS is beautiful. The woman’s voice is just perfect and the backing instrumental is great as well. I have no idea what she’s saying but it doesn’t even matter.

10Tim Buckley

Phantasmagoria in Two - As a massive Jeff Buckley fan, I’ve always meant to go and listen to Tim’s music but I just never got around to it. This was a fine song but didn’t really do anything for me. The melody was good and his voice swept over the guitar chords which created a very nice atmosphere.

11Pharoah Sanders
Izipho Zam (My Gifts)

Colors - This is like Christmas music but way more thought out and realized. The bells and horns used throughout bring such a good, cozy feeling and once the singing comes in it just becomes full. The singer’s voice is deep but soft and is like a warm blanket that i never want to take off.

12The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground & Nico

Pale Blue Eyes - A soft, slow moving love song. Good enough for the first few minutes but at nearly six, it gets a little repetitive. I probably should be focusing on the lyrics but it’s still a fine song when I’m not.

13The Beatles
Rubber Soul

In My Life - I really need to listen to more of The Beatles. I just never think about it when thinking of music to check. The lyrics and the melody were simple but very effective. This is a beautiful little love song that REALLY makes me want to check the rest of the album but that’ll have to wait for another time.

14The Kinks
The Kink Kronikles

Big Sky - I don’t get it. This just sounds like a big mess. The instrumentation was fine I guess but the vocals for the majority of the track were unattractive and once they finally became appealing, the song was about to end. I really don’t understand. Maybe it works better in the album.

15The Animals
The Best of the Animals

House of the Rising Sun - I actually have heard this. Everyone’s heard this. But not in its entirety other than maybe in the documentary we watched in my digital music class. It’s a classic, what more can be said. The passionate howls of the singer definitely resonate with me and even though the song is quite simple, and I can’t make out most of the lyrics, his voice makes up for it.

16Lee Morgan

Cornbread - Great background music for sput browsing.

17Tiny Tim
God Bless Tiny Tim

Tiptoe Through The Tulips - Incredibly high vocals over a simple background song that sounds like it was released 20 years too late.
