G-Funk Off - Drifter vs. Foxblood

A rec competition between myself and fox. We rec each other albums that the other hasn't heard and rate them, whoever has the highest total score in the end wins. As a bonus factor, user 50iL will also be listening to both recs and giving his rating/opinion which will affect the score. If others want to join in on the listening that is ok but you must listen to both albums in a given round, after that, you can drop out but please do not hold up the main players.

Drifter's Rec

Foxblood: The flows are very professional and catchy and show a group with a ton of potential. The beats are nice but they are really more of a framework for the vocals which seem to be the main focus, which is fine because that's their strongest asset. The vocals have a lot of character and personality, they are fun and bouncy. Sometimes they use the same triplet patterns a little too often but it's not a problem. This doesn't sound like a standard rap tape from the time period, it's definitely a AAA high quality studio effort. I like this kind of half-sung flow a lot, makes me think of big moe. It sounds like this would be a fun artist to see live and sing along with. 4.3

50iL: Man, I loved that record. The horrorcore and G-Funk mix worked splendidly, and the group plays off each other amazingly. The vibe was absolutely on point. My only complaint would be that some songs were lackluster and the singing wasn't the best. 4.15

Drifter: It's hard to really describe why I love this so much. The self-made beats are fantastic in their original melodies and Woodie's innovative use of budget equipment. His young voice/amateurish flow mixed with his superb storytelling and relentless amount of passionate bars lead to create a relatable experience despite never being in his position. Like 50 said, it's gritty as hell and endlessly genuine. The run from The Streets Are Callin' -The Clock Is Tickin' - Norte Sidin' is of the genres best and once made me forget I was walking through my neighborhood and somehow made me like I was there in Antioch with his spirit walking alongside me. Unbelievable. 5/5

50iL: Mostly solid, but had a few duds. Granted, The Streets Are Callin Me is, like, the best G-Funk song ever. Feels endlessly genuine but still gritty as hell. Most of the album, however, Woodie sounds a bit child-like imo; the pathos of the record feels a little confused. Again, though, very solid. 3.7

Foxblood: RBX has a pleasant deep voice and this album has good lyrical content, it’s not totally like your typical braggadocios flow. I love the anti death row/Dre stuff since I don’t like death row either so that was pretty entertaining to me personally and that alone is enough for me to like the album. Any kind of X-files reference is an automatic plus for me as well. The production is great and a lot of the beats have a tasty flavor with unique sounds, they can be pretty ‘classic hip-hop’ sounding. The beat for 'Akebulan' is sublime. Unfortunately I didn’t totally connect with his personality, and it didn’t feel like he was always going as hard as he did on his Dr. Dre feature on The Chronic. I think he is good enough to hold an album on his own. 4

50iL: Just great, really. Consistently moody, occasionally jazzy, and very well done overall. RBX is also a very convincing personality and he goes OFF in some parts here. My only complaint is the album is overlong. 4.35

Drifter: The charisma and the way each member works off of each other reminds me of Death Row’s O.F.T.B. but the beats sound like an amalgamation of all the great Bay Area producers of Ant Banks, E-A-Ski, Studio Ton, JT, and more. The hooks are catchy, the bars are tight, and the vibe is nailed. The enjoyment they’re having never borders on silly; their rep as gangstas is still preserved. My personal favorite “We Don’t Luv Em” has a fantastically sung hook, a stellarly produced beat, and invigorous rapping that is honestly hard to beat, even by the big legends of the West Coast. Not To Be Fucked With is a short, yet potent dish of G-Funk that has unfortunately been largely forgotten since its release in 1996 (Hey, another reason why it’s the best year for G-Funk.) 4

50iL: Mostly well done, but not that noticeable for me. The personalities of the rapper mostly failed to engage me. However, there are a few quality joints that are worth the price of admission. 3.6
