05.01.22 | Very excited for the northman. I also want to see scream and the batman. Don't rly have any interest in seeing that sonic movie though, same with the uncharted one (Tom Holland was such a profoundly bad casting choice, same with walberg) |
Gyromania
05.01.22 | The new Nicolas Cage movie is apparently worth seeing too, gotta remember to watch that |
neekafat
05.01.22 | @bgill see it!! Everyone I know loves it, even those that aren't normally into indies
Thanks potsy (:
@Gyro Northman's fantastic, I wouldn't bother with Sonic sober, and yeah Uncharted is trashpoopgarbage |

05.01.22 | hell yeah man The Lighthouse is a masterpiece fair and square |
WalrusTusk
05.02.22 | I was actually really disappointed by The Batman. Pattinson is great and the idea is THERE but the writing is so damn clunky. The Riddler was a Joker knock-off, his relationship with Catwoman makes no sense, and Alfred was completely under-utilized. Explain why we had to have three different scenes in Penguin's nightclub. Why does no one take off Batman's mask when they've captured him? The dude is literally just walking around begging to be unmasked. Also, why does Bruce change at the end? What turns him from a spirit of vengeance to a symbol of hope? Riddle me that one Batman. |

Gyromania
05.09.22 | some good nostalgia in the recent spiderman but honestly way overrated |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.09.22 | Yeah, the only thing I liked about that movie was the returning Spider-Men and in concept the villains, tho i felt they didn’t get enough screen time and their arch’s felt
unearned. It all just really reinforced my feelings that this latest Spider-Man incarnation is the worst ever
Dr strange was more unexpected and Elizabeth Olsen was great |

05.09.22 | Gyro you're the last person I expect to love Petite Maman lol

05.09.22 | I’m interested to see what you think as you are generally positive about marvel films and I am not, but despite the mixed reviews on this one I kinda liked it |
neekafat
05.09.22 | yeah i mean even tho i do tend to skew positive with them, I often find myself at odds with what the "fans" like (I couldn't stand wandavision) so I'm actually kinda excited by how off-put they seem lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.09.22 | WandaVision was SO bad but the implications of that show pay off in this in a big way imo |
neekafat
05.09.22 | ok good, i thought there's a lot they could do with her but wv was not promising so that's good to hear! |
neekafat
05.09.22 | what did you think of Loki? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.10.22 | She’s the best part of doc 2 imo
Loki is the only one of the D+ I haven’t tried yet. Admittedly I haven’t been able to get through most of them but I’ve at least watched a couple episodes of all the live action ones except Loki |
neekafat
05.10.22 | That’s the only show I’ve liked lmao mainly bc it’s more sci-fi than superhero. First two eps are rough but the last four are the most fun ive had in the MCU in a long time |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.10.22 | Before these shows all started rolling out and all we had was the trailers it was pretty much the only one that piqued my interest so I’m not sure why it’s the last one for me to get around to. Shame to hear the first couple eps aren’t great tho because there is a solid change that means I won’t have the willpower to make it any further 😂 |
neekafat
05.10.22 | Believe me that’s what usually kills me too (can’t handle a slow start) but those two eps are still better than anything from Wandavision! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.10.22 | Very low bar but I’ll take it 😂 |
Gyromania
05.21.22 | I teared up watching a rock fall off a ledge, and the crazy part is when they introduced the rocks I thought "okay this is getting kind of stupid". But somehow they still got me a few minutes later. The music and sequencing play a huge role in why the scenes in this movie are so affecting. The movie champions some really cheesy messages too but there's a universality to them and the way they're presented. It might be a masterpiece but I'm kind of glad I watched it alone, feel like it might be awkward with a partner |
neekafat

Gyromania
05.22.22 | that final sequence where they chase down the raccoon and the mother pulls her daughter out of the bagel is amazing. the music, pacing, cinematography, all so good. i don't even care that it's cheese to the max. it happens so fast but it's def the emotional climax of the film |
neekafat

05.22.22 | I haven’t but it’s high on my list! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.22.22 | I prefer it slightly. Similar themes, different execution, main actress is an absolute star. |
neekafat
05.22.22 | Titane was a bit dense/scattershot (in amazing ways) but I would love to see her handle something a little more straightlaced structurally (if that’s what Raw is) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.22.22 | That’s a good way to put it and yep that’s what ur gonna get with Raw |
IsisScript80
05.22.22 | I suppose that this should really go in the "last 2 movies seen" thread, but I'll put it here because it seems relevant...
At the cinema, the two current multiverse films, 'Dr. Strange...' and 'Everything, Everywhere...' (as the latter has only JUST been released here in the UK in a limited capacity).
Dr. Strange was a mess of a movie... entertaining, corny a lot of the time... great moments (a lot directly down to Sam Raimi) and shitty script, mixed with some quite affecting parts. I did enjoy it on its own merits, but way below 'No Way Home' which was equally as messy, but hit home in more ways (including more heartfelt fan-service that I'm a sucker for).
'Everything, Everywhere...' is magnificent. Simple as that. Blew the conceptually similar Marvel film out of the water. Love it with every fibre of my being. |

06.01.22 | sput ate it lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.01.22 | Lmao
Well agreed I’m glad you liked it and I’m glad it’s polarizing people, if there was one thing the MCU absolutely needed it was a bit of shake up to the usual echo chamber of hyper-enthusiasm |
neekafat
06.01.22 | yeah I'd agree, the more i think about why it doesn't click with modern audiences it makes sense, people have an over-inflated sense of character arcs and social drama when sometimes all a comic book movie needs is great action beats and surprising turns |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.01.22 | Honestly the irony of that is that Scarlet Witch has had a more dramatic character arch than pretty much anyone else in the entire MCU to date and is not only a great tragic villain, but their first villain in general to succeed at being sympathetic in any capacity imo.
But man
The scene where she massacres the Illuminati
Fucking yes |
neekafat
06.01.22 | yeah agreed and that scene slaps 1000% |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.01.22 | I don’t know how that movie managed to maintain a PG rating (in Canada at least) |
neekafat
06.02.22 | Canada is fucked wth
Also just saw Maverick so will be adding that shortly |
IsisScript80
06.02.22 | "yeah I'd agree, the more i think about why it doesn't click with modern audiences..."
Dr. Strange 2 definitely had great moments that didn't coalesce into a great film. Scarlet Witch arc in it was excellent, as were the bits where you felt that it was really Sam Raimi behind the camera. Some of the dialogue was ropey, and the America Chavez character was nothing more than a talking plot device, amongst other things (along with continuity errors) that didn't make it work altogether as a movie.
I think it's more those things that caused an issue with its reception, rather than anything outright contentious in relation to character arc. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | “Some of the dialogue was ropey, and the America Chavez character was nothing more than a talking plot device, amongst other things (along with continuity errors) that didn't make it work altogether as a movie.”
It’s just funny to me because people point stuff like this out about ds2 when it’s been happening in every MCU movie since the dawn of man. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | Finally MCU does an actually compelling character arch for once and all the sudden people care about the legions of completely vapid ones lmao
As for continuity… people have been pointing out continuity errors in each movie online for like a decade. The broader the MCU gets and the more multiverse shenanigans that happen obviously the frequency is going to get even worse. And now the shows are being roped in too. This is what MCU Stans asked for. It’s convoluted by nature. I can’t imagine stressing out much about it. A great time for suspension of disbelief. It’s just comic book shit
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | America Chavez did suck tho and the movie definitely had problems,
I just think it’s funny that they are all the same problems that these movies have always had and people are just not taking notice, right when MCU finally does something that doesn’t completely make me want to kms |
IsisScript80
06.02.22 | ^ Just seemed more standout to me in contrast to what it does (very) well. The peaks and troughs are more extreme than usual... they're generally more consistent (in a good and bad way). |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | Ehh idk, I’ll take peaks and troughs over whatever the hell the last 3 Spider-Man movies, eternals, and Shang chi were, my god |
rabidfish
06.02.22 | New Dr strange was so fresh visually and I really enjoyed it as entertainment. Finally someone with a clear vision working with the MCU budget.
Sadly, storywise it falls really flat. But since I took this as just a stand alone movie I can forgive it. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | STOP TRYING TO MAKE NED HAPPEN
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | My fav part of ds2 is when Wanda has a change of heart and destroys the bad-bad tower and doc is like “she did the right thing” or whatever and it’s like yeah Wanda totally redeemed herself from massacring earths mightiest heroes it’s ok cuz it was a different dimension so murder rules don’t apply
When she comes back we can all hug and avenger again |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | Wanda’s a terrorist and i Stan, no need to sugar coat it |
rabidfish
06.02.22 | Also despite America (ugh) being so bland, I love her star-shaped power. So comic book-y! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | “ Sadly, storywise it falls really flat”

06.02.22 | Euphoria rules fuck off |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | And I don’t know how anyone could have strong feelings about assassination nation, it was just a dumb dime a dozen teenie b horror. Glad I watched it just to see Bella Thorne get hit in the head with bat |
alamo
06.02.22 | i liked the first season and visually its unmatched but i hate how it sacrifices any logic or relatability for nonstop shock value in the s2. none of the characters are likeable and everyone's awful to each other literally all the time like 10 mins into s02e01 and there's a 10 yo drug dealer killing a mob boss w a bat to the head, next scene a girl fucking her best friend's recent ex for no reason, next scene teenager nearly overdosing in the party bathroom and then lying to her ex, next scene someone being beaten up like calm down |

06.02.22 | The only thing I truly hated about s2 was the scene where lil macbook plays guitar for 5 fucking minutes straight |

06.02.22 | 5 and 7 are really great, 12 was straight poo and 13 was very forgettable. I enjoyed the Raimi touch though |

"Nah, should I?"
i think so even though it was cancelled. i love it, it has a simiar vibe to euphoria but with a less heavy vibe and teenagers that look more like teenagers lol. plus there's justice smith in crop tops so |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.22 | Lmao kk I will check it. Need something new to watch. Been watching American Horror story and I’m on the circus freak season and honestly I’m ready to admit that the show is just kind of fucking boring. I like everything about it more than I like actually watching it. Iconic cast, awesome concepts, amazing theme music and title videos, but it’s just… so… boring.
On the subject of teenager shit I recently watched s1 of Yellowjackets as well and it made me want to blow my brains out. |

06.21.22 | That’s too bad I like Alex Garland, although I thought the ending of that Devs show ruined the entire rest of the show, that wasn’t his best work. |

06.24.22 | I haven't seen Men yet but what's so awful about it? It looked damn good from the trailer I saw. Like break it down, what makes it so outrageously offensive |
neekafat
06.24.22 | Watch it then |
Gyromania
06.24.22 | I'll eventually get around to it but prob not any time soon. But in your opinion what was so bad? It objectifies women? I'm curious because I've heard this criticism before for movies like Sucker Punch but wasn't able to see what the big deal was. Is it just kind of subtly offensive or full blown preachy dogshit that's not worth seeing. Because Hyperion mentioned it having cool visuals which is all you need sometimes to carry a movie whose story or characters aren't amazing (under the skin comes to mind) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | I bet men rules, neek is soft and sometimes their move takes suffer for it
They are usually so movie positive, the knee jerk reactions like this are usually reserved for things that actually slap but were too bleak for them
So yeah when neek has a knee jerk negative reaction it’s actually a pretty good sign |

I’m a bit wary of Marcel but that’s just bc they only thing people emphasize about it are that it’s “cute” and “hopeful” and that’s nice and all but. Also no idea when it’ll be out in theaters in Savannah |

08.01.22 | The Spiderman movie was legitimately great imo
Strange 2 and new Thor are peepee poopoo |
Gyromania
08.01.22 | i was expecting a lot more out of that movie, esp based on some of the hype i was seeing. it just ends up seeming like a whole lot of boring fan service though and the whole final sequence of the film was really w.e |

08.01.22 | For me what was great about the Spiderman movie was that there was genuine attention to character development for all of the returning characters (except Foxx lol oh well) and that Peter losing Aunt May actually seems like something that will move the current Peter forward (unlike Tony's death that had him in stasis for like 3 movies). So all of that ON TOP of the fact that all the fan service rocked and Defoe got to feast? Two thumbs up bb |

08.01.22 | dafoe was great, he always is tbh. i was just hoping for a larger conflict. the one presented felt rly manufactured to me. i did love some of the character interactions though. it also helped spawn this incredible work of art: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NImKxQLlQXY |

had my issues with it, some of which I foresaw anyways, and it's probably not a movie I would have checked out otherwise, but I guess I will say that the one redeeming factor was the guy's performance |

08.12.22 | About to watch crimes of the future. Found a really outraged review for it:
"Repulsive pretentious dry-heaving garbage.
Scenes of disgust that range from "what the f" to *gag* to "that's just straight up wrong".
Dialogue with the emotional range of a carrot.
The main character communicating entirely in barely intelligible hoarse grunts.
A plot where weird things are introduced, and then explained a few scenes later, on repeat.
And then it just...ends.
Absolute waste of time and I feel stupider for watching it"
I'm excited for Prey, it looks solid. |

08.12.22 | sounds like someone who shouldn't be watching arthouse genre films |

08.12.22 | The cinematography in this movie is incredible. Love the colour palette and the way the streets and overall city look. They really nailed the whole dystopian future aesthetic and I love it when movies get creative with sets, props and costumes. I feel like Cronenberg has always been great at this kind of thing. Gotta be honest tho, the idea of mutilation as a form of sexual and/or artistic expression is incredibly stupid. I know there's a legit irl market for this kind of thing but it's not something I can connect to in the slightest. I'm not especially put off by it either, it just comes across as dumb to me.
So far it's pretty damn solid. I'm an hour in but had to do morning chores. Honestly nothing egregiously bad so far. Certainly nothing approaching the levels of torture porn of something like Martyrs |

08.12.22 | “ Given this comment I have no doubt you'll think that”
Super weird and unnecessary attempt at an insult but yeah I like Alex Garland quite a bit, the trailer was super intriguing, and find his imagery really satisfying and I’m not gonna assume an obligatory knee jerk visceral reaction to the thought of a cisgender man saying something about gender politics just because he’s cis without seeing it first myself because that would literally just be bigotry. Especially since, from conversations I’ve had with people who have seen it, it sounds like Garland stays in his lane and is almost exclusively touching on toxic masculinity and tropes and how they are basically terrible for everyone else, which is absolutely something cis-men should be discussing and grappling with. And it’s been well established that we have entirely different stomachs for gratuitousness and look for different meaning and feeling in film and that’s perfectly fine. So I’ll form my own opinion when I see it thanks. For the latter, Get Out has been the only good thing Peele has done so far, and the alternate ending kinda ruined it imo, US was really really bad at the end of the day, and I have little hope for Nope, which had a very not intriguing trailer. So yeah I think I’m gonna like Men and not like Nope. |
neekafat
08.12.22 | I loved Annihilation and hated Us
I hated Men and loved Nope |
neekafat
08.12.22 | And Gyro, glad you're digging it. I def connected to it in a lot of ways because it's largely about how artists can shape and manipulate public perception which I think is fascinating, if you can get past the metaphor I don't think it's dumb |
Gyromania
08.12.22 | Us is fucking awful, agreed. Get Out is the only one I liked and I def don't think it's the masterpiece it's touted as. I don't have much hope for Nope either, but I'll watch it regardless. Annihilation was awesome I thought, but they dropped the ball a bit with the final sequence where she meets the alien.
Crimes of the future was awesome. I agree after finishing it that it's kind of winking at how people are susceptible to manipulation. I don't think it's a masterpiece but it's among the best movies I've seen so far this year (Everything Everywhere is untouchable rn) |

08.13.22 | Yeah so just watched Men last night and it was great. The choice to use the folk lore of The Green Man as a vessel for all these aspects of James’ personality / toxic masculinity / misogyny was a brilliant idea. the rare and bemusing instance of a male archetype of rebirth symbolizes the narcissism of men and the historic trivialization and oppression of women and their bodies by patriarchal society nicely. The imagery of the green man birthing aspects of himself in a cycle gives that emphasis, and is symbolic of the endless generational cycle of abusive behaviours and misogynistic climates that toxic masculinity can reproduce. Good movie I’d give it a 0/5 for not explaining the mythological and historical references to me like I’m two years old and because men aren’t allowed to criticize their own extensive laundry list of failures, inadequacies and shortcomings. Can’t wait to see how ham-fisted and diluted Nope is next, I hope it ties into the MCU. |
Gyromania
08.13.22 | Really good review of Men. You've successfully restored my interest in seeing it. Pls let me know how underwhelming Nope is! |
PotsyTater
08.13.22 | I generally like divisive art, and this is definitely divisive. Seeing reviews on letterboxed comparing it to Mother(!) and I see the comparison. It seems like a lot of people that didn’t like it had an understandable reaction to some of the themes and imagery that made them hate it without so much as a second thought. I was lucky to have a pre-existing knowledge of the folk lore that it draws from and I think it made my first watch a lot “smoother” than most peoples would be. It’s funny because in Paganism, it is said that when you look up through a dense canopy and see sunlight filtering through the leaves you are seeing the Green Man’s face, and early in the movie before any of that symbolism becomes evident at all, the protagonist is walking through a really lush green forest and its really atmospheric and there is a shot from the ground looking up through a canopy with the light filtering through like that and I immediately thought of The Green Man lore, so by the time you start to actually see more tangible hints and then physical representations of him I was already thinking about the movie from an entirely different angle than I would be if I wasn’t familiar with any of this lore. I think that the lore contextualizes things in a different way, and if it wasn’t part of the film I would agree more with some of the criticisms. Not going to go into it too much more than that because I don’t want to ruin anything for you but I definitely think going into it with that slight bit of information about the lore will make your experience more positive, and will certainly help you make more sense of the… gross… final act |

08.13.22 | In other movie news I can’t believe I’m feeling excited about Black Panter 2 after how many promises the first one didn’t live up to (it was about 1% as hip-hop as the trailers led me to believe), but this reimagining of Namor as an underwater Aztec warrior with seemingly Polynesian inspired aesthetics is so fucking badass and I can’t believe I live in a timeline where they made Namor of all characters look cool and interesting |

08.25.22 | Prey was really good
Just watched Northman last weekend and I liked it quite a bit but it was my least fav eggers. Trying to make a blockbuster sacrificed a lot of the depth that I admire him for. Valhalla Rising had the visual spectacle AND the depth so I prefer that movie as far as Viking porn goes. |
PotsyTater
08.25.22 | One thing that I REALLY thought was a nice touch about prey, is that although the studio wouldn’t let them film it in the Comanche’s native tongue, they compensated for that by framing the French colonizers as the foreigners and put a lot of effort and detail into that. Like omitting the subtitles for the French and such was a great choice that pushes the immersion that you are experiencing the story from the Comanche perspective even though it was in English. |

08.25.22 | I've only seen Prey and The Black Phone from here but I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Tried to catch Nope but it left theaters before I had the chance to make it there |

09.10.22 | I just watched new Thor. I hate to say it but Natalie Portman was the worst part of the movie. She just doesn’t have comedy chops. It felt like she was just doing a poor Kristen Bell impression. I was expecting a lot more from her. Otherwise, Christian Bale was a great Voldemort. He did a good job. The (mostly) black and white shadow realm scene was stunning. And the first 20 minutes or so of the movie with the guardians was absolutely hilarious. If they were going to go ahead with such an underdeveloped plot I would have preferred to watch a lot more shenanigans like that and a lot less contrived moments of unearned heart. |

09.10.22 | The chemistry between Thor and the guardians is so good, it feels like such a waste to have that all set up just to end up being nothing but a 20 minute gag |
