Neek's 2018 Q1: Films

Movies I've seen in theaters since the start of the year
1Drake
More Life

Cloverfield Paradox: 2/5
Messy storytelling and a generic approach to the premise undercut whatever fascinating mysteries and inherently horrifying circumstances our dull characters find themselves in.
2Royal Blood
Out of the Black

Black Panther: 4/5
A massively important step in the evolution of the genre (and mainstream films in general), Black Panther is the kind of film with the power to change minds. And that more than makes up for a disappointing lack of originality in terms of action and plot.
3Paramore
Brand New Eyes

Annihilation: 5/5
When someone asks me what a 5-star rating means, I usually say, "No matter its faults, it's constantly arresting and engaging throughout its entire runtime." I think this did that with flying colors.
4Raizel
The Lady of Heaven

Midnight Sun: 2/5
Switching between insipidly written scenes that check off cliches at an alarming pace and moments of surprising emotional potency, Midnight Sun's biggest fault is still that it has no shred of uniqueness to call its own. At times it feels like the most expensive commercial ever made. Did meet Bella Thorne at an early screening of this though, that was cool.
5Alanis Morissette
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

Thoroughbreds: 4.5/5
A fascinating meditation on morality and empathy, and also just a kick-ass movie with beautiful visuals and a cool atmosphere.
6Led Zeppelin
In Through the Out Door

Death of Stalin: 4/5
While the bigger picture might get lost in the feverish antics and general hilarity, Death of Stalin is a great comedy with some serious things to ponder.
7Sufjan Stevens
Enjoy Your Rabbit

Tomb Raider: 2.5/5
While there’s certainly some fun to be had, an inactive and uninteresting protagonist where there should be one empowered and exciting brings an already bland story tumbling down.
8Jack White
Lazaretto

Game Night: 4/5
Apparently you can still make comedies that are both low-brow and mainstream, yet cinematically competent and just goddamn funny. This movie managed to up both the stakes and the jokes from scene to scene with strange finesse.
9New Order
Power, Corruption and Lies

Ready Player One: 3/5
There’s a large amount of excitement to be had here, massive action scenes and gorgeous scenery to behold; it’s just purely up to the viewer whether it’s worth trudging through a dreadful script and climax after climax of an overstuffed runtime.
10Lady Gaga
Artpop

Pacific Rim Uprising: 2.5/5
There’s about 20 minutes of inspired badassery that should’ve made this sequel work, unfortunately the rest is just bland and poorly shot. They take their best ideas and use them up early on, leaving only the ugly and boring for the end.
