04.21.19 | Human Beings are special because we change our environment to suite us. Whilst any measures to reduce emissions is noble, zero should be the end goal. But I'm not sure how possible that is.
Whilst many of the environmentalist movements aims are noble, there are anti technology/industry themes in the movement that I think are detrimental. If anything I think it will be technology that will get us out of this mess.

04.21.19 | yes i think a “primitive” way of life is superior in that you’re able to sustain yourself autonomously and you’re not fucking up things that aren’t easily unfucked. not that the average person is really responsible for climate change, obviously almost all of it is caused by massive corporations but technology is still the central problem |
SlothcoreSam
04.21.19 | The technology to make a difference has existed for decades, the problem is the big multinational corporations and governments, I'm talking to you oil and gas companies, Saudi, USA et al, have squashed any attempts to change the way we live, because their profits will take a massive hit.
The other solution apart from mass extermination, would be to stage an uprising of epic proportions. Overthrow most governments, take down the big carbon emitting industries, and go back to preindustrial living. But that then means no electricity, computers, Internet and therefore no Sputnik debates.

i mean you can't get a used electric car for less than a grand so you're instantly unable to reach the lower class market that way
it kinda ties into the one big problem with this kind of middle-class activism, it places the onus on the working class to solve the crisis, therefore absolving the real culprits, corporations, of as much guilt as they are due. for instance, in england we've just had the plastic bag tax in the last few years, and while that's a decent idea it accounts for miniscule amounts of pollution and risks compared to heavy industry, air travel and the like. what we really need is a global carbon tax/emissions tax to incentivise eco-friendly production and practices by corporations |

04.22.19 | 1) plant shit tons of trees to take CO2 out of atmosphere
2) produce charcoal from burnt wood and plants, plant it into the ground to stop erosion and put back CO2 into the ground from the air
3) produce methanol (basically fuel made out of water), which also binds CO2 and there is a climate neutral fuel. we don't even need electric cars then which have a horrible footprint (at least right now, I am sure there will be ways to be more efficient in producing them)
4) more solar power on every building possible
5) help Africa as fast as possible out of poverty so that their fertility rate will finally sink.
Stop seeing at as normal/normative to have children at some point. I know so many women who really get pissed if people ask them "but when do you want to have children?". Forcing this view onto people will not help. And I don't know, maybe adopt a child rather than making one. I know it is just me, but I don't get why people always want to see their own fucking faces in their children.

04.22.19 | "the market would make it happen naturally"
free markets tend towards monopolies, so how do you figure that? if anything, catastrophe just provides opportunity for new capital flows. there's nothing "natural" about markets either. they take many different forms. for me the classic line sums it up (think it was Fredric Jameson who first said this): it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.
the fact is beyond CO2 there's still much more to the human-environment relationship. how we use our resources, our land, destruction of habitats, pollution, hazardous waste, agriculture. just solving CO2 isn't gonna answer those questions. neither will handing it to market or technocratic logic. as it is we're gonna face real challenges in the next few decades and I think that's inevitable. it won't hit the whole world equally but it will touch everyone. food resources are gonna face problems, large scale migration is likely, not to mention all the feedback loops over which we have no control once they're activated. |

anarchistfish
04.22.19 | austrian school is Cartesian fappery. can't blame the government for everything dude. the fact is that capitalism is messy, and if you can get your foot in the door early on and take control of a market, its resources and infrastructure, you can bust every competitor's balls until you can't be dethroned or can just buy everyone out. it only tends one direction when it's left to the market. |
guitarded_chuck
04.22.19 | except inevitably greed will take over the control such as the greed of the oil and gas lobbyists giving a monopolisitic control of the energy sector |
anarchistfish
04.22.19 | yh, you can't talk about capitalism without government (nor violent appropriation actually). these forms have developed together since the beginning, ever since capital first started manipulating the environment into commodifiable resources. there has to be some form of political organisation between groups and individuals, so if you got rid of our current form of government what do you think would happen? is power spread evenly or does it correlate to control of resources and violence? doesn't that just lead to its own form of government? |
guitarded_chuck
04.22.19 | governments form organically yes but what im telling you is monopolies actually dont sustain themselves in an open market, the market will drive innovation and corporations come and go so long as the government doesnt intervene and maintain the monopolies such as they have done with oil and gas |
GhandhiLion
04.22.19 | @anarchistfish
Our way of changing the environment is on a much larger scale than any other organism. The way we changed the environment has constantly changed because of our advanced brains. The bird builds nests today, and it will likely build those same nests in 100 years.
Government and capitalism kind of depend on each other. Lobbying and corruption is inevitable so long as there is no separation of political power and economic power. And that separation is a pipe dream. |
guitarded_chuck
04.22.19 | it's not a pipe dream but it requires an educated populace choosing the right governance

04.23.19 | "Something is definitely going on, cant say what though. " climate change, lol. in the early 2000s there was that heat wave which is attributed to like, 30,000 deaths. but in general, winters will get more extreme, summers will get more extremes. 'global warming' has turned out to be a pretty lousy term which half the populace misunderstands on a fundamental level. the event should be called 'climate instability.' also frustrating that people think, in maybe 200 years when sea levels have increased and stabilized, that humanity just needs to move inland a couple of miles and everything will be fine, like that's the primary alteration or even only alteration that will happen. |
BandNewbac
04.23.19 | It has yeah, but its more to do with the rate in which it is changing at the moment. there are natural cycles that change climate (milankovitch cycles) as well as things such as sunspot activity but these are things that are well understood and tend to happen at a much slower rate than the current changes are occurring at |

the holocene was meant to have started 10k years ago. they're now discussing whether the holocene is even relevant anymore and there's all the discourse around an "anthropocene". the pleistocene prior to the holocene is dated from 2.5mya to 10k bc. not only this but the extinction event going on now is up there with the biggest in geological history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction so no, it's not really the same intensity as most "natural" shifts. it's quite a bit more intense |

yeah we are, well the IPCC SR15 that came out in october carried the statement that the current climate trends are with a 97% or maybe 98% certainty anthropogenic
so for most of us the question is well beyond "are we contributing to it" lol
but i think a large sect of the populations have this argument that "well if we inhibit our GPD to mitigate near-future warming projections and other countries don't then we will risk our hegemonic influence"
which is understandable logic but it's going to kill us all. i strongly believe our modern tendencies toward nationalism are preventing people from dealing with anthropogenic climate change. but hey, in the 80s reagan and gorbachev were able to secure some disarmament like with the INF treaty. but on the other hand, the INF treaty was just dropped from both US and Russia like, two months ago?

Due to the lowering difference in temperature between the two poles and the equator, important winds called "jetstream" are getting weaker. That is one reason for the slower weather changes. The high/low pressure areas move slower. So if you have a hot area right now, it is likely that it will stick to you for a while. Same thing for cold weather areas...just like in the US last year. |

The report found that thirteen countries or regions impose the death penalty for "same-sex sexual acts" with reference to sharia-based laws. The death penalty is implemented nationwide in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen; implemented locally in Nigeria (12 northern states) and Somalia (southern parts); allowed by the law but not implemented in Afghanistan, Mauritania, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates; implemented through non-state courts by ISIS in parts of Iraq and Syria.[122]

But to explain myself: I do support the LBGTQ community when it comes to institutional hate against them like the new laws in Brunei. However, I just thought your statements were too generalizing and saying that Islam is the problem for the LBGTQ community implies that every other religion is fine with it. They're not. Bible says same shit about gays. Most conservative countries like Turkey or Russia discriminate LBGTQs. But yeah, Islam is the only evil. 04.24.19 | obviously every country would need a unique renewable energy + nuclear infrastructure |
EclipseInYourEyes
04.24.19 | Yeah well, Denmark is like 100% coast. Look at Germany for example: all the wind energy is in the north near coast or off-shore because it is not efficient enough to do it in the south. therefore they need to transport the energy which causes a good amount of energy loss. That's why I said earlier that the battery technologies need to step up their game (not blaming anyone btw) |
budgie
04.24.19 | i was looking at the standford model chuck posted, it has a state-by-state analysis of where the energy could reasonably come from; states in new england had a near majority of their energy coming from off-shore wind, and realistically, denmark has a near-majority coming from off-shore wind. it's hopeful? obviously arizona won't get any significant amount of its energy demand from offshore wind. sources of renewable energy will be situational in every case. population of scotland is nearly 1:1 with the population of denmark, so it's not crazy to suppose 50% of scotland coming from wind, ergo wind isn't economically unfeasible. i'm not sure why zak used the massive population of london as an argument against denmark being progressive with its energy demand. couple offshore wind with nuclear and solar? we have a long ways to go, complaining about energy inefficiency will just promote conservative coal-or-nothing ideologies |
