2019 Album Compendium

Self-explanatory. 2019: the year of Final Fantasy ports.
1Blu and Oh No
A Long Red Hot Los Angeles Summer Night

3.7/5 - Not Below the Heavens, but still great. Will anything ever be Below the Heavens, tho? No. Beats are fire. Blu sounds hungry and passionate. [West Coast Hip-Hop]
2Matmos
Plastic Anniversary

2.6/5 - Had a hard time deciding if I...disliked this or not? [Experimental, Electronic, Plunderphonics]
3Ariana Grande
Thank U, Next

4.7/5 - Yes. Next. [Pop]
4Georgie Sweet
Stories

4.9/5 - More, please? This is really good. [Soul, Jazz, Nujabes-like]
5Dos Monos
Dos City

3.5/5 - Been looking for more stuff like this. Might grow on me more. Love the production. [Experimental Hip-Hop]
6Stella Donnelly
Beware Of The Dogs

4.5/5 - never drop that attitude. [Indie Folk, Indie Pop, Singer-Songwriter]
7Flume
Hi This is Flume

4.6/5 -known about Flume for a while, but this is the first time I gave them a shot. Pretty good. [Glitch Hop, Electronic]
8Little People
Landloper

4.4/5 - Beautiful. [Downtempo, Electronic]
9Little Simz
GREY Area

5/5 - This record elevates me somehow. [Hip-Hop]
10Laura Stevenson
The Big Freeze

5/5 - Wow. As always, Stevenson does not disappoint. Value Inn is probably my new favorite of her songs. [Indie Folk]
11Jade Bird
Jade Bird

3.2/5 - Solid debut. [Indie Pop/Folk]
12Billy Woods, Kenny Segal
Hiding Places

4.6/5 - Billy's bars don't disappoint, as per usual. Kenny Segal production is tight. [East-Coast Hip-Hop]
13Lamb
The Secret of Letting Go

3.0/5 - Meh. Huge fan of Lamb's early output, but not this. [Downtempo, Electronic Pop]
14Kevin Abstract
ARIZONA BABY

3.0/5 - Gotta listen to this more, but liking it. WAY better than Brockhampton's last 2 records. [Brockhampton-core]
15Tyler, the Creator
IGOR

5/5 - Yeah, I think that after coming back to again and again, over and over this year...I can say that this is his best record by a long shot. Loved the fuck out of Scum Fuck Flower Boy and still go back to it regularly, but this is something else entirely. From IGOR'S THEME to GONE GONE I can't help but bop my head to this thing and sing along, and just feel it. It's a very physical listening experience. You really feel every single track on here. The pitch shifts and lofi production choices really work in its favor to make it as textured and full of bite as possible. Love this album. One of my favorite of this decade. [Hip-Hop, Pop, Soul, Lo-Fi]
16Injury Reserve
Injury Reserve

3.7/5 - the boys are back in towwwwn. Love this album like all their others but imma have to come back to it like 30 more times before I rank it with their 2 other albums. Gravy n Biscuits with its latin pianos is just mwah, so good. Rap Song Tutorial? Like holy guacamole, that joint was bananas and very much a flex as the frontpage review says. The singles I had already listened to and they were all fire. The track with Peggy and Cakes ruled. Oh and Freddie. [Heart] Idk if I'll end up loving this more than Floss and Dentist, but maybe? Who knows? [Experimental Hip-Hop]
17Flying Lotus
Flamagra

3.4/5 - Upon further listens...ugh. I wanted to like this album so much more. I was so excited and the hype got to me and blah... [Beat Music, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Wonky]
18Blu and Exile
True And Livin'

3.4/5 - Blu & Exile? In 2019? Holy guacamole. Just give me more! :(( the third track is kind of too cheesy... [West-Coast Hip-Hop]
19 Otoboke Beaver
Itekoma Hits / いてこまヒッツ

5/5 - This is what rock needs. Fuck Baroness, this is the real shit right here. Started listening to this when it first came out, but I was caught up in a lot of stuff. Having listened to it...ugh. Definitely for fans of Melt-Banana, Midori (they're cookier tracks obvs), and just punk in general. Prolly my fav of the year with Little Simz. [Hardcore Punk]
20オオハシ (Ohashi)
波のはじまり (Nami no Hajimari)

4.9/5 - Wow. Just, wow... This is that extreme-beauty nonsense. It's heavenly from start to finish. The vocals really add that extra layer of bliss. The guitar work on this is phenomenal. The drumming just bops like hell. This is great. Don't let it pass you by. It's on Spotify. Go listen to it. [Psychedelic, Post-Rock-ish, Idk, Beautiful Music]
21Car Seat Headrest
Commit Yourself Completely

4.7/5 - Yes, yes, yes. This is a fantastic live album! They sound so great live. I hope they come to my city soon 'cause damn. The Frank Ocean cover was beautiful. The encores really did a lot to hype the momentum of certain tracks to even higher levels. Idk, it's just great when a band can just come out with such a great product of their on stage performances. [Indie, Emo, Punk]
22Erika Casier
Essentials

5/5 - This might take the AOTY cake... This album is so gorgeous. It's a beautiful and majestic blend of Trip Hop, R&B and Pop. The production is subtle, yet bouncy. The mood this record sets is sexy, dark, cold... I don't know, this clicked very hard with me. Thanks to user luci cuz I think I found out about this thing on their list. [Trip-Hop, Downtempo. R&B]
23Freddie Gibbs and Madlib
Bandana

3.6/5 - ahhh...
24The Dangerous Summer
Mother Nature

3.0/5 - Been a while since I went out of my way to listen to a pop punk record. This one's pretty good, tbh. Also that cover art is amazing. [Pop Punk]
25State Faults
Clairvoyant

4.8/5 - This record is fucking gorgeous. I listened to this three times in a row. I love this record. Probably my favorite hardcore album in years. These guys have a really heavenly yet Convergy sound. It's just..bliss. My favorite track is probably the title track. [Screamo, Hardcore]
26Joliette
Luz Devora

3.7/5 - Mira, puñeta...
27Shinichiro Yokota
I Know You Like It

4.8/5 - As a big fan of Soichi Terada, I found this album to be a relaxing mix of nostalgic feels while having its own personality and flavor. Japanese electronic musicians are god tier and Shinichiro is on that same tier imo. If you like anything by Terada, give this dude a shot. [Techno, Dance, Electronic]
28DJ Python
Derretirse

4.1/5 - This is some really nice and spacey idm with some reggaeton flavor thrown in there for good measure. Officially it's an EP but it feels more like a short album. It's pretty great. Give it a shot. [Electronic, IDM, Reggaeton]
29Shirokuma
Clothes I Wear For The Space I'm In

3.8/5 - What a nice surprise. Thanks to MarsKid for the rec. This is some beautiful-ass screamo. Heavy, consistent and gorgeous. Space was a nice way to end the album. Idk, just a really pretty and triumphant record.
30Bon Iver
i,i

3.6/5 - f [Bonn Iberrcore]
31Thom Yorke
Anima

3.9/5 - finally liked my first Thom solo joint. this was pretty great all through out. I wasn't really getting it at first, but it did eventually click hard. [Electronic, Experimental]
32JPEGMAFIA
All My Heroes Are Cornballs

4.4/5 - [peggycore]
33Danny Brown
uknowhatimsayin¿

3.7/5 - [Hip-Hop] - pretty good. Not dark like Atrocity and not as wild and out there as his stuff on XXX. Some of his best lines are on here tho. The production is pretty decent. If it sounds like I'm on the middle with this one, I'm not. It's definitely quality, just don't go into expecting a huge, ambitious and trippy oddyssey of grimy ass hip hop. This is laid back Danny. He sounds very relaxed. It's a nice change of pace. Not his best album, but not bad at all.
34Slauson Malone
A Quiet Farwell, 2016–2018

3.9/5 - [Experimental, Hip-Hop, Plunderphonics] - I like this. I think I still need to give it like 5 more listens in order for it to click even deeper with me. I love what he's going for and I love all the little sample cuts and manipulations. The tracks are like little vignettes of fuzzy, experimental hip-hop sample plates. The vocal features were a nice touch. Overall, the experience as a whole is very good. It took me a long few months to fully appreciate it, tho.
35Kero Kero Bonito
Civilisation I

4.9/5 - [Noise Pop, Synth Pop] - just give me more. this new sound is so gooooood. blending a lot of the different elements from your past two albums and just sticking the landing so hard.
36Battles
Juice B Crypts

3.1/5 - pretty good. i don't think they'll ever top Gloss Drop or Mirrored, tbh. I like this more than La Di Da, tho. Sugar Foot rules.
37clipping.
There Existed an Addiction to Blood

4.7/5 - Art.
38Andy Stott
It Should Be Us

4.9/5 - I was a sucker for Luxury and I'm a sucker for this.
39Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
Ghosteen

3.3/5 - its okay, not one of his best musically. his lyrics are beautiful on this tho
40Omni
Networker

3.7/5 - issa great
41Guerilla Toss
What Would the Odd Do?

4/5 - dope ep
42Charli XCX
Charli
