1. Stagefright
Nice to see When a Stranger Calls, Blood and Black Lace, and The Town That Dreaded Sundown here! Always thought that Toolbox Murders remake was fairly underrated too. List has encouraged me to watch it again and probably the original while I'm at it. I love myself a good slasher. For my list as for my list these days I actually go for the second in the series for Child's Play and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I put the first ones on here over them though because I think they're the better films overall and the nostalgia is massive for me because the first time I got to watch a horror flick that wasn't semi childlike we did a little marathon that consisted of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Child's Play, The Amityville Horror and Amityville Dollhouse. That day permanently changed me.
Also anyone who hasn't should check Stagefright and Angst. Angst is more of a serial killer film but I included it anyhow cuz it's fucking phenomenal. Refrained from adding more serial killer ones though otherwise Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer would be here too. Stagefright is from Soavi who also directed Cemetery Man, The Church AKA Demons 3 and The Sect. It's got some insanely cool kills and an amazing killer. Love the variety in the deaths so much and just the vibe overall. I will say there's two different soundtracks for it that make an insane difference in the atmosphere of it and I highly recommend finding the version with the original soundtrack because one is fitting and the other is a mix of hair metal and traditional metal that kinda kills the feel of it overall. I'm at metalhead but honestly I could do without it in my horror aside from very rare cases. |

03.03.23 | Sorry for the massive wall of text. These lists and the other ones dude was doing awhile back have officially encouraged me to do at least one horror list of my own or possibly a little series of them as cheesy as it sounds or whatever I have a stupid strong connection to the genre and it really has helped me through damn near every tough thing I've dealt with in life. A good horror film is the perfect thing for me to escape into and I love it so much. |

03.03.23 | Nice list comb.
Nice to see we both appreciate Friday the 13th part 4 for the slasher masterpiece it is. |

03.03.23 | 4 is definitely my 1, one of my all time faves. love all of the top 5 here tho |
wham49
03.03.23 | lots of good ones here, not a good order though, Is Saw 2 a slasher movie
the sleeper here is the Town that Dreaded Sundown
forgot 4 classics, Prom night, My Bloody Valentine, Terror train, the prowler
Frifday the 13th part 2 is probably the best F13 IMO, has the best kill scene for sure, machette to the head and his wheelchair goes down the stairs complete classic |

03.03.23 | The prowler is top 5 for sure |

03.03.23 | Crispin Glover in River's Edge is a favorite of mine. Definitely think 4 is the shining moment in the Friday franchise although I gotta say I also have a soft spot for Takes Manhattan even though most hate it lol. My mom rented it and Part 2 for me when I was real young and those were my introduction to the series. We were gonna just get one but the rental section in Hy-Vee only had those two.
I love Terror Train and My Bloody Valentine. Always thought Prom Night dragged like crazy and was overrated though but I should go back and try again I guess. The second Prom Night rules big time though.
When I made my list I realized I left out Halloween so I cut Girl's Nite Out AKA Scaremaker but you guys should still check it out if you haven't. It's a college campus slasher and the killer is rocking the schools mascot costume which is a bear with some sick ass claws on it lol fun stuff |
combustion07
03.03.23 | Happy Birthday to Me is underrated too imo but didn't quite make the 20. Same with April Fool's Day. There's a lot of good holiday themed slashers out there. Black Christmas is the goat of them though. Those phonecalls and how obscured the killer is throughout is perfectly done. I just watched it with my nieces and nephew around Christmas and they all loved it even though two of the three normally refuse to watch anything pre 2000's. |

03.03.23 | List needs more Suspiria (1977) |
combustion07
03.03.23 | Suspiria was on the supernatural list! Also all of you Suspiria fans how do you guys feel about the second installment Inferno? I absolutely love the wild color schemes throughout that one and even though it's crazy scatter brained in the plot department I hold it up there with Suspiria |
Zac124
03.03.23 | Suspiria is still a Slasher though? Isn't it? Idk not the biggest horror buff out there. |
combustion07
03.03.23 | Idk if I'd call it one necessarily but you could. I'm a little nitpicky on what I include in this category though. Even if you do though with it already being on one list I'd leave it off just for the sake of mentioning more flicks for people to check out |
combustion07
03.03.23 | Cloverhitch Killer is another really great serial killer flick. I slacked on it but finally watched it a month or two ago and it kinda blew me away. When it ramps up those scenes are wild. Might be a bit bias though because BTK was from my area and I read up quite a bit on his case when I was younger |
Zac124
03.03.23 | Fair. I do need to watch more slashers though. One of my least favourite types of horrors, so I need to watch more. |

03.03.23 | suspiria definitely isn’t a slasher. Argento never really made a true slasher, they’re all giallos.
the closest the Italians ever got to making a true slasher were bay of blood and stage fright. lamberto bava’s a blade in the dark might count too. |

03.04.23 | "Clovehitch Killer is fuckin underrated!! not really a slasher tho"
That's why I included the serial killer statement. I always separate those two categories so the serial killer tag would be more for stuff like it, Henry, Angst, Schramm, Tony and other flicks like that.
I'd definitely say Stagefright and A Blade in the Dark would qualify as slashers. Definitely true that Italy never really jumped on the slasher train in the heyday though. Outside of those two and Deodatos Body Count and Pieces I can't think of any others I would say are slashers off the top of my head. I'd say the giallo really kept them away from getting into the slashers much although there's a decent amount of those you could argue are in a gray area between the two |
TalonsOfFire
03.04.23 | I love Inferno, one of the most immersive horror movies I’ve seen in years with such great visuals. I absolutely love the main theme and rest of the soundtrack too. The plot is a mess but I don’t care, I like how sprawling it is and definitely my favorite Argento. Clovehitch Killer is great too, best movie David Fincher never made. My top 20 slashers would be something like this:
1. Psycho (invented the genre!)
2. American Psycho
3. Halloween
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street
6. Us
7. Pearl
8. Sweeney Todd
9. You’re Next
10. Halloween (2018)
11. Scream
12. Black Christmas
13. X
14. Candyman (2021)
15. Candyman
16. Psycho II
17. Happy Death Day
18. Dressed to Kill
19. Halloween II (1980)
20. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II
Runner-ups are Child’s Play, Friday the 13th, and maybe Scream 2, I dunno. Slashers are far from my favorite kind of horror, but the classics and some of the unconventional ones are my favs. |

03.04.23 | sad not to see sleepaway camp II: unhappy campers in anyones else :( |

03.04.23 | Ugh are we really calling Pearl a slasher now |

03.04.23 | "sad not to see sleepaway camp II: unhappy campers in anyones else :("
I actually had Sleep away Camp III on my top 15 but apparently it somehow got deleted and replaced on accident before I posted :/
Part 2 is awesome also but I slightly prefer 3 just due to how overwhelming the cheese level got. It's 100% my brand of stupid.
You ever watch Return to Sleep away Camp and if so what did you think of it? |
combustion07
03.04.23 | Also I wouldn't particularly call Pearl, Us or You're Next slashers but I'm all for the confines being wider for other people. Back when I did my horror channel on YouTube I'd always get shit for certain things I'd include on my horror/exploitation shelf because I've got some weird opinions myself.
These convos are filling a void for me since getting locked out of my YouTube so big cheers to you Caliggy for making these lists |
CaliggyJack
03.04.23 | 2 and 3 are good but Return to Sleepaway Camp is better than both those imho |
BAT
03.04.23 | Pieces / stagefright / my bloody valentine[restored*] are essentials, generally love everything on calig, combs, and talons lists. i've gotta give absurd a rewatch lol i have it on tape listed as 'zombie 6' but felt like an italian vers of halloween w/ george eastman. also never got around to curse of chucky/the tv show but i've heard they're really good. i'd probably throw some argento stuff on here but their slasher status is arguable, phenomena and tenebrae are favs tho
and is return that restored unfinshed sleepaway camp4 or some other project? i saw the one that was like under an hour long and didn't think much of it, enjoy the rest of the series tho.
not sure if it'd crack my top 20 but i do enjoy the terrifier movies |
combustion07
03.04.23 | Absurd is definitely a fitting title for it lol wild ass movie especially the oven scene. I love it's whole vibe so much and it's crazy to me that it also got titled as a Zombie sequel. I'm also a big fan of Anthropophagous which it also gets referenced as a sequel of. Seems like a lot of people find that one boring these days and although it can be slow, for me with that atmosphere you could even stretch it out a bit longer and I'd be cool with it. Only thing I've seen Eastman in so far that I did not enjoy was Porno Holocaust lol that shit is GROSS |
TalonsOfFire
03.04.23 | Yeah I know Us, Pearl, and American Psycho are unconventional picks but I feel like there’s enough slasher elements for them to be included. You’re Next I thought was very slashery, just with a black comedy, self-aware edge kinda like X in a way. I don’t know if Ready or Not counts as a slasher, that would be in my top 20 if so. |
BAT
03.04.23 | lol i've seen uhh erotic nights of the living dead? and it was the only porn i've seen that put me to sleep outta boredom, the only like half interesting thing that happens in it is a stripper opening a beer bottle. love all those random joe d'mato/eastman movies though and was mind blown to find out he was the owl killer&writer on stage fright. the dumbest one i've heard of was 'dog lay afternoon', not sure which ones but i've seen him pop up in a couple of poorly titled mostly softcore movies on pornhub |
combustion07
03.04.23 | "You’re Next I thought was very slashery, just with a black comedy, self-aware edge kinda like X in a way."
It does have some elements going on but I've always viewed it much more as a home invasion movie more than anything else. Great movie though.loved it in the theater and I'm due to watch it again.
And lol on Erotic Nights of the Living Dead. I ended up watching it when I was either 12 or 13 and goddamn you're not lying on the boredom. That was one of the most dreadful viewing experiences I've ever had in my life. D'mato & Eastman collabs are awesome though, I look at them like Italy's version of Herman Yau & Anthony Wong with the CAT III greats like Ebola Syndrome, Taxi Hunter and Untold Story
"2 and 3 are good but Return to Sleepaway Camp is better than both those imho"
Return has some fun moments for sure but it's the weakest in the series for me. My favorite kill in it is that "drugs are bad mkay" scene lol. I haven't seen it in like a decade but I'm tempted to hit the whole saga again due to this thread. I'm surprised to hear it's your favorite sequel. You're the first person I've encountered with that take. Most people seem to hate it that I've talked to and I normally end up half assed defending it.

03.04.23 | The low budget and return of the original cast is what sells return for me |
