CaliggyJack
03.01.23 | gonna make 3 lists based on the "big 3" of horror.
This one is Supernatural, then I'll do one for Psychological Horror, and then Slashers. |
artiswar
03.01.23 | Rosemary's Baby - Alan Smithee
wut |
bellovddd
03.01.23 | Get rid of anything by Insidious and The Conjuring and its a better. Also The Babadook should be in there somewhere! |
bellovddd
03.01.23 | The Orphanage (2007) - J.A. Bayona - also fantastic
|
CaliggyJack
03.01.23 | "Wut"
His name isn't tainting my list. Good film or not. |
budgie
03.01.23 | what a weird way to split up horror films. what does ALIEN fall into? JAWS? THE WICKER MAN? 28 DAYS LATER? |
YoYoMancuso
03.01.23 | WHERE. IS. GOOD BURGER |
artiswar
03.01.23 | I get the guy is a piece of shit but can we at least say his name? |
YoYoMancuso
03.01.23 | His name is Kenan and he is the star of Good Burger |
CaliggyJack
03.01.23 | @budgie
Alien & 28 days later=Supernatural
Jaws=Monster film, could be classified under slasher but that's up to personal pref.
Wicker Man=Ok you got me on that one I don't have a clue for this.
Idk I might make a 4th list for movies that don't fit the big 3.
@artiswar do whatever you want, I'm not saying his name. |
artiswar
03.01.23 | He Who Must Not Be Named |
CaliggyJack
03.01.23 | More like he who I am personally preferring to not name |
budgie
03.01.23 | alien and 28 days later are def not supernatural
jaws as a slasher film?? ??? |
artiswar
03.01.23 | Jaws sucks. Opening kill is epic, then it's just drawn-out disappointment. Deep Blue Sea was better |
budgie
03.01.23 | u should be banned frmo the internet for saying that shit |
artiswar
03.01.23 | Shark Night 3D was better |
artiswar
03.01.23 | better character arc too |
budgie
03.01.23 | banned from the universe |
artiswar
03.01.23 | I'll ban YOU budgie, fuck you. But then where will I get dream-pop recs from |
rockarollacola
03.01.23 | Lots a good shit here, not sure these all would fit under the "supernatural" tag though. I would classify 8 & 9 as sci-fi |
unclereich
03.01.23 | "Get rid of anything by Insidious and The Conjuring and it's a better. Also The Babadook should be in there somewhere!"
all those suck |
budgie
03.01.23 | babadook score is so good |
unclereich
03.01.23 | check ravenous (1999) better movie great score |
porcupinetheater
03.01.23 | Supernatural means ghosts, demons, hot nubile co-eds |
porcupinetheater
03.01.23 | List got the weird categorization but Argento rips so gj |
Pheromone
03.01.23 | Supernatural means ghosts, demons, hot nubile co-eds

unclereich
03.01.23 | https://youtu.be/ThNgSjogMHU?list=PLeXpfq8jysn3DI3sKWv18UlAQjgf536yE |
budgie
03.01.23 | ravenous is ok. score isnt spook |
Vercetti
03.01.23 | Haven't heard of The Mummy (1959). Is it really that good? I remember watching the one from the 1930s (the one with Boris Karloff) and thinking that it's kind of boring.
I personally don't categorize zombie films like Train to Busan or Dawn of the Dead as 'supernatural horror' as I see them more as a horror version of post-apocalyptic science fiction. But I like the list. Good and interesting picks. I also like that it's a nice mixture of new and old films. |
CaliggyJack
03.01.23 | Supernatural is generally just something beyond the laws of the natural. So stuff like Sci-fi and zombies counts towards said tag imho. |
CaliggyJack
03.01.23 | @vercetti Karloff mummy is absolutely overrated. The 1959 Hammer remake is 10 times more tense and enjoyable. |
PitchforkArms
03.01.23 | Hereditary #1 but it's not even here, good luck next time, tho |
anode
03.01.23 | @artiswar Jaws is incredible. Barely even watch movies unless I’m with chick cause they don’t normally hold my attention but jaws hooked me |
budgie
03.01.23 | thats cuz its one of the greatest films ever made |
artiswar
03.01.23 | But Deep Blue Sea has LL Cool J, Thomas Jane, AND Samuel L Jackson. Also more sharks |
porcupinetheater
03.01.23 | Hereditary is overrated tbh
Incredible as a disturbing family drama but the last 20 minutes seem not to understand what made most of the movie work so well beforehand and it just dies on the table. One of the most frustrating endings to a great movie I’ve seen |
artiswar
03.01.23 | I didn't mind the ending of Hereditary, the exposition was very heavy but necessary |
porcupinetheater
03.01.23 | I see you, idk just felt like Toni Collette’s grief vacillating between love and hatred for own son was the most interesting and toughest dynamic in the movie, and turning her into the supernatural monster felt like it leaked all the harrowing dramatic momentum onto the concrete and only resolved the heart of the story in the most banal “horror cliche” sense |
MillionDead
03.01.23 | Yeah, the reason that Hereditary isn't a perfect movie to me is the fact that it turned into another demonic possession cliche in the end. Still, the good parts of it are too good to ignore. Also, the quality inconsistency in this list is wild. Miss me with the jumpscare fests. |
artiswar
03.01.23 | yeah garbage like the conjuring doesn’t even register as horror to me |
MillionDead
03.01.23 | Straight up. The Conjuring sucks. Also, as important as Argento is to the horror aesthetic, I feel Suspiria was pretty shallow movie with some cool shots here and there. Not much in terms of plot, just some style. I think the remake was better, despite not being amazing either. |
BookoftheFallen
03.01.23 | The thing involves an alien. thats not supernatural. |
PitchforkArms
03.01.23 | Disagree pretty hard on Hereditary's ending. Love it pretty thoroughly. |
Zac124
03.01.23 | 4 is incredible. List is missing Braindead, Hellraiser and The Shining, |
combustion07
03.01.23 | Very interesting to include zombies in the supernatural list. I'll do the same with mine. Only included one per director otherwise I'd definitely have more from Fulci, Carpenter, Craven and Argento.
20. Tombs of the Blind Dead
19. The House of the Devil
18. Wishmaster
17. Lake Mungo
16. The Serpent and the Rainbow
15. Alucarda
14. Queen of Black Magic
13. Phenomena
12. Amityville Horror II The Possession

10. Pulse (Japanese version)
9. Day of the Beast
8. Dark Waters (1993)
7. Rosemary's Baby
6. From Beyond
5. The Beyond
4. The Thing
3. Poltergeist
2. Day of the Dead
1. Exorcist III |
combustion07
03.01.23 | Ah damn totally blanked on Hellraiser, The Shining And Dead Alive. I'd take out Wishmaster, House of the Devil and Tombs for those |
budgie
03.01.23 | tombs of the blind dead is the shit

1. the evil dead

18. it follows
29. what we become
20. house of the devil |
combustion07
03.01.23 | Damn budgie your list just made me realize I blanked on a bunch of stuff lol. It's so hard to narrow these categories down for me because I love the genre so damn much. I'd at least have to make room for Evil Dead and The Blob. Probably for Return And maybe Demons also.
Also dope to see someone else showing Tombs some love! The first two films in that series have an insane atmosphere to them and I love it so much. Also Grave Robbers deserves an honorable mention here. Amazing Mexican horror flick that's way too slept on. |
budgie
03.02.23 | blob 88 sooooo fuckin goooooooooooooooooooooooood |
unclereich
03.02.23 | basket case agreed |
combustion07
03.02.23 | Basket Case is so damn fun. Used to have a tradition of watching either it or Frankenhooker every Halloween. Brain Damage is amazing too and I also like Bad Biology quite a bit |
CaliggyJack
03.02.23 | @budgie hot damn Banshee Chapter
Damn boi u a connoisseur |
budgie
03.02.23 | yea banshee chapter is very rad |
Zac124
03.02.23 | Completely forgot about The Wailing. Probably my second favourite supernatural horror. If you haven't seen it, you need to watch it. |
combustion07
03.02.23 | I haven't watched The Wailing yet but I've been meaning to for awhile. I saw Banshee Chapter a long time ago but I wasn't really in the mood for that kind of thing when I watched it so I probably didn't get as much of it as I would have otherwise. Gonna have to revisit it |
TalonsOfFire
03.03.23 | There is so much overlap between supernatural horror and psychological that it doesn’t make sense to separate the two, unless for some reason one wanted to highlight psychological horror movies that have nothing supernatural going on. Also it’s debatable but I don’t consider Jaws, Jurassic Park, The Birds, Aliens, Prometheus, or Pan’s Labyrinth as horror. That being said, my overall top 20 horror movies would be:
1. Psycho
2. John Carpenter’s The Thing
3. The Witch
4. Annihilation
5. The Exorcist
6. Alien
7. The Shining
8. Let the Right One in (best vampire film)
9. 28 Days Later (best zombie film)
10. In the Mouth of Madness
11. Rosemary’s Baby
12. Suspiria (2018)
13. The Wailing
14. February (The Blackcoat’s Daughter)
15. Midsommar
16. The Wicker Man
17. Doctor Sleep dir. cut
18. Hereditary
19. John Carpenter’s Halloween
20. Bride of Frankenstein
Some runner-ups are Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), The Omen, and Night of the Living Dead. |
combustion07
03.03.23 | Since I did the one per director rule it was stupid hard for me to choose between The Thing and On the Mouth of Madness for Carpenter. Not gonna lie Prince of Darkness would make my list too otherwise. I love Let the Right One In so damn much, I bought the book a few years ago and have been meaning to dive into it.
Nice to see some Doctor Sleep love also. Probably the best movie I've ever seen in theaters |
bellovddd
03.03.23 | WHOEVER SAID JAWS SUCKS AND DEEP BLUE SEA IS BETTER
WHERES THE CRACK? |
Spec
03.03.23 | I appreciate the inclusion of The Witch because I usually get roasted when I mention it. That movie fucked with me subconsciously for days. |
bellovddd
03.03.23 | The Witch is a fantastic movie! |
Spec
03.03.23 | The troglodytes I know irl disagree probably because there aren’t enough jump scares. |
bellovddd
03.03.23 | People watch too much Blumhose and not enough A24 |
TalonsOfFire
03.03.23 | Yeah Mouth of Madness and Doctor Sleep are so underrated. The Witch is amazing, quite an experience seeing it for the first time and it felt like a modern horror movie made just for me and my sensibilities. A24 is indeed ruling 21st century horror. |
budgie
03.03.23 | "People watch too much Blumhose and not enough A24"
want a nasty opinion? a24 is tired |
combustion07
03.03.23 | "The troglodytes I know irl disagree probably because there aren’t enough jump scares."
Building tension through atmosphere > jump scares all day until the end of time! I love myself some slow burn journeys to terrifying shit! |
PitchforkArms
03.03.23 | The Wailing rules |
combustion07
03.03.23 | I forgot about I Am a Ghost when I was thinking supernatural stuff also. I'd definitely recommend checking it out too. Really cool idea executed well imo. It won't be for everyone but I think some of you would probably enjoy it a lot |
