09.30.18 | "John the Fisherman" by Primus from Frizzle Fry [alternative metal/funk]
All poor John wanted to do was be a fisherman. His family doesn't support him, he's lonely, does poorly in school, but he loves fishing and can see a future in that. He defies the odds and becomes a fisherman, living his dream. AND THEN FUCKING DIES WHILE OUT AT SEA in a big storm.
It's mixed because clearly he doesn't want to die, but at the same time, he feels fulfilled that he chased his dreams instead of giving into societal pressure and this makes me super emotional for that reason.

Danny Elfman- The Incantation [album is Beetlejuice]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq5U5Zs-oIU
Whether or not you know of Beetlejuice, this is a fantastic piece of music written by a composer in his prime. A whimsically haunting soundscape filled with wonder and surprise around ever twist and turn. Incantation is a delightfully zany song, much like the film it accompanies. |

The video links I could find didn't do the respective songs justice so i will post my 4th choice. It is kinda newer but has been in rotation for @ 4 months now and, every time it comes up in a mix, I'm like "Goddamn, that's an amazing track!"; so I think that qualifies.
It is a long one at @ 16 minutes but WELL worth the time spent. If you are too weak to hang in there for the full experience, you can skip to @9:30.

BlazinBlitzer
10.04.18 | Hi, guys! Sorry for the delay. The past few days have been really rough and I was experiencing some temporary college burnout, but I think I'm good now. Anyways:
Tinashe - "Dreams are Real": I guess the "dreamy" part of this works and there's some nice keyboard programming to be found but the rest of it just comes off bland and forgettable.
2.6/5
Primus - "John the Fisherman": I've known and jammed this song for a while now. There are maybe a couple better tracks from that album, but no less a Primus classic.
4.2/5
The Skull Eclipses - "Pillars": This was pretty good. I like the balanced, good quality of literally everything this offers. However, there's also nothing here that pushes beyond that quality.
3.5/5
Insomnium - "While We Sleep": Individually, each instrumental and vocal part is done pretty well melodically and structurally, but none of it meshes together very well. Unfortunately, you need a really smooth blend to make a song like this work, and this just doesn't quite deliver on that.
3.0/5 |
BlazinBlitzer
10.04.18 | Damn, Lefty getting me on his side early. "Ugly and Vengeful" is currently my fourth favorite song of the year, so I think that'll justify this early prize of a:

10.04.18 | John the Fisherman: Always had Primus on my radar but never got into them for some reason. Song was quirky and fun, some good instrumentation. 3.8

10.04.18 | It's funny, to me, that "John the Fisherman" is on here. I forget that most of you guys are pretty young and maybe have only discovered Primus more recently with their extensive catalog already out. It's easy to get lost in the later stuff (post-Brown Album). Seas of Cheese and Frizzle Fry came out during a musical explosion when other, now legends (Pixies, Nirvana, Faith No More etc.) were also putting out stuff that sounded like nothing before it. It was exciting stuff.
Frizzle Fry and "John the Fisherman" have been in my A/T favorite list for @ 28 years. It is a powerful song that shows Les Claypool's ability to communicate a profound story juxtaposed with his twangy, quirky style. Great choice Ars.

LeftyMcRighty
10.04.18 | @ Metalrain- Check out "Frizzle Fry", "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" and "Pork Soda" if you want to get to know Primus. Stuff after that can get really hit or miss. Those 3 albums (especially the first 2) can be listened to from beginning to end. They are great albums |

BlazinBlitzer
10.08.18 | Hey guys, I'm back! I'm gonna update the list tomorrow since I gotta get some sleep, but here's a breakdown of the past few days' tracks:
BUCK-TICK - "Kyokutou Yori Ai wo Komete": Straightforward?! This thing is everywhere, granted in the most awesome ways possible. Tons of distortion and space rock goodness with hard-hitting production. It's one to come back to.
4.3/5
Sweet William - "Karakai": There were some good and very pretty moments here and there but many others were just too choppy. Even if the track is trying to be offputting, its good moments felt like they warranted a smooth flow that never came to be.
3.2/5
Bauhaus - "Bela Lugosi's Dead": -5 points for playing the excruciatingly monotonous drums on this song, but I guess +9 points for being a staple of an important musical movement with sound design ahead of its time, so I'm thinking:
4.0/5
DRAM - "Misunderstood": I just don't see it. While I realize this track is self-aware and doesn't take itself seriously, I can't find the quality to enjoy or laugh with it much. On top of that, it seems confused with how to make fun of itself. In essence, I apologize for being the party pooper, but the party wasn't very fun to begin with.

What 60s prog fan doesn't know this song? It's one of my favorites from the album actually. Is this bait? Are you trying to get a 5 out of me? The flutes are pretty, the voice is mellow, but passionate, and the drums are just amazing. I like how the guitar and bass take a backseat, it almost makes it seem classical. Maybe baroque poppy? OR just folky actually. Whatever it is, I like it. Oh yeah, that flute solo at the end is magnificent. What a classic.

10.15.18 | Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Curse Of Millhaven

10.15.18 | slow going this month.
Finally got my exam over with.
12: Five, Eight, and Ten - Mineral - 3.6 - Solid emo, always liked this band, never loved them.
13: October All Over - Unwound - 3.7 - I need to listen to this band more.
14: DRINK ME - ARS WAS TAKEN - 3.2 I feel like I like this more than I think I do? If that makes sense?
16: When Poets Dreamed of Angels - David Sylvian - 4 - very pretty |
ArsMoriendi
10.17.18 | "October All Over"
The vocals are kinda weak here honestly, but I like the bass a lot here. The psych effects make the vocals way better. Okay this is pretty cool.
3.7/5 |
ArsMoriendi
10.17.18 | "DRINK ME (ft. aj simon)"
So far I hate this. Yup, hate this a lot. Bland and annoying when not bland.
1.7/5
"The Curse Of Millhaven"
Sounds like folk punk so far? Not bad. I know "Henry Lee" from this album and the la's are similar, but faster lol. Cool organ, but I can't help of "Henry Lee" the whole time. It's kinda bothering me.
3.4/5
"When Poets Dreamed of Angels"
Folky so far. Great guitar work. I like the flamenco flair it has.
3.8/5 |
Minushuman24
10.17.18 | Never thought of it as folk punk. I can hear it though. |
Papa Universe
10.17.18 | David Sylvian - When Poets Dreamed of Angels: 3.5 (really lovely guitar work)
Those Poor Bastards - I Walk The Line: 3.5 (very dark and Mark Lanegan-ish version of Johnny Cash. cold and intriguing, albeit repetitive) |
Egarran
10.18.18 | *Stretches and yawns*
I'm up for another month off. This is soooo relaxing, dudes.
*Goes back to sleep* |
ArsMoriendi
10.18.18 | "I Walk the Line"
So it's a creepy Johnny Cash cover? The original's better, this is... fine.
3/5
"Rubicon"
Off the bat, this is Ars-repellent. Pig squeals and punishing riffs. Black metal is lost on me.

Metalrain
10.20.18 | Ugly and Vengeful: This is a massive track, in all the best ways. It somehow doesn't become boring, mostly because the instrumentation knows when to move on. 4.1
Five, Eight and Ten: Not that big of an Emo fan, but this was allright. 3.2
Drink Me: This just passed me by without any reaction from me. It's just.... there. 2.3
The Curse of Milhaven: I love me some Nick Cave, one of my favorites of Murder Balads. 4.2
When Poets Dreamed of Angels: This was just lovely, great percussion and guitar playing. 3.8
I Walk The Line: Decent track, fitting for halloween. 3.0
Rubicon: Had some pretty interesting riffs, but none of the riffs really stand out. It feels a little dry. 3.3
My Beatiful Leah: Great abrasive track with just the right length. 3.8
Darkjewel: Has a slow start, but it really does get going later. 3.7 |

10.20.18 | Honestly I think its due to the lack of regular updating and bumping. I keep forgetting this exists (and I'm the one who started it) until it pops up on the front page |

10.20.18 | So it's the same thing as with the casual convos thread? Someone leaves, because it is not fun anymore, but because he left it is not fun anymore for someone else, and so on and so forth. |

3.3/5
"The Morning"
This is gross sounding honestly. Yeah, I hate this. Sorry.
1.8/5 |
Metalrain
10.22.18 | The Morning: This is way too repetitive and generic. 2.2
Darkness: Looking at the description for this band gave me a good laugh. Pretty good for what it is trying to be, nerdy and fun. 3.7 |

10.22.18 | * Nekrogoblikon -- "Darkness" ~ [3.5] |

10.22.18 | I'll try to actually finish he updates from last month this weekend. I kinda dropped off the site a bit for almost a month there |
neekafat
10.23.18 | 1. “Dreams are Rea”: Very nice but also pretty generic, super damn chill tho - 3.3
2. “John the Fisherman”: One of my top-tier Primus jams, probably their most memorable tune for me tanks to Guitar Hero - 4.3
3. “Pillars”: Enjoyed this way more than I thought, super cool and super atmospheric hip-hop jam right here - 3.8
4. “While We Sleep”: Oh no—wait actually this ended up being pretty good as it went on - 3.4
5. "Kyokutou Yori Ai wo Komete”: This is really damn good on nearly all accounts but I can’t stop thinking of how gimmicky it sounds to me. 3.8
6. "Karakai”: Idk what this even is but I really like it. The soundscapes remind me a lot of noname’s most recent album, would be interested if this stuff was an influence on her - 4.1 |
ArsMoriendi
10.23.18 | "Darkness"
I don't even like the clean vocals honestly. The music is pretty varied though, so I can deal with that pretty well.
2.9/5
"Music Jail"
Well, I already like They Might Be Giants sooo. This is pretty epic, but the lyrics I know from them are usually was more out there, so I'm disappointed in that department. Musically it's great though. I like this.

18: Rubicon - Wildernessking -4.3 fffffFFFFFFFFFUCK
19: My Beautiful Leah - PJ Harvey - 3.7 Short and fucking eerie
20: Darkjewel - Gallops - 3.5 this slaps
21: The Weeknd - The Morning - 2.4 I was hoping that I'd like this, but I just could not get into his vocals, nor the melody
22: Darkness - Nekrogoblikon - 3.8 Ah man this was super fun. A great track for this month.
23: Music Jail - They Might Be Giants - 4 God damn, should I be listening to They Might Be Giants??

Zombie Prostitue - Voltaire

Regina Spektor - "Small Bill$" (from Remember Us to Life)
This just became a 10/10 song for me, but I've been loving it since it came out. Super weird, aggressive, and fun, and I wish she'd make an entire album of just this sound and others like it

10.23.18 | 7. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”: I think I really like this - 4.1 |

10.23.18 | 9. “The Incantation”: Definitely not my favorite composition from Elfman, but this is just brimming with creativity and weirdness throughout. It’s a lot of fun- 4.0

10.24.18 | "Take It With Me"
I love Tom Waits and he's so good at being heartfelt. Despite this not being a favorite of mine from Mule Variations, it still hits the exact mark its meant to. When it comes to slow ballads form Mule Varations, "House Where Nobody Lives" is the better though honestly. Still great though.
3.7/5 |
Papa Universe
10.24.18 | The Weeknd - The Morning: This guy is one of those types that release a chunk of great singles, catchy and refreshing, but puts none of that innovation and creativity on final record. 2.5
Nekrogoblikon - Darkness: Get ready for the silliest, most insincere song of the month. This does indeed sound like a soundtrack to R-rated Gremlins remake, but, y'know, actually good one. I """"think"""" (can't quite tell) this is fun. 3.5
Tom Waits - Take It With Me: Tom is one of those people who can't sing for shit, but knows how not to make that an issue. Damn this is spine-shivering. 4.5
The Frogs - Homos: Can't see the euphoric laughter, but it's an alright comedy track. 3 |

10.24.18 | Take it with me- yup that's an emotion right there. Can't decide how I feel about his voice but it's a good song 4.0

10.25.18 | 10. "I Talk to the Wind”: Kinda weird, but lovely af. The choruses are kinda lame just cause I hate Beatles-vocals style things, but those instrumental passages are sooooooooo nice - 4.2
11. “Ugly and Vengeful”: holy FUCK - 4.7 |
neekafat
10.25.18 | You kidding me pops with that 3.0? That blows any of your tired pasty post punk away any day |
Papa Universe
10.25.18 | I'd say "blow me", but seeing as you're one of those who liked the song, you might take it as an invitation. |
neekafat
10.25.18 | If that song didn't blow you (away), idk if anything could get you off. Might wanna look into some Viagra pops |
neekafat
10.25.18 | 12. "Five, Eight, and Ten": Not normally my kind of thing, but by the end I was won over by the bouncy musicianship. Idk, they made me give a damn - 4.0
13. "October All Over": Really loved the sinewy creeping of this song, there was a lot going on and the repetition of that riff was delectable. Definitely makes me excited to check that for me and Zombie's list coming up! - 4.2
14. “DRINK ME”: This takes all the worst elements of modern pop music and yet somehow makes them into something surprisingly layered and cool… So I guess I get all the initial negative knee-jerk reactions, but I think it’s a solid banger in its own right - 3.8
15. "The Curse of Millhaven": All Ive heard from this guy is Skeleton Tree so I had no idea what to expect. While this wasn't quite as good as the stuff from that album, I loved the manic energy and bizarre country/folk influences - 4.1
16. “When Poets Dreamed of Angels”: Whoa fuck dis nice - 4.2 |

10.25.18 | Music Jail: Really fun and catchy track. 3.7

10.25.18 | 17. "I Walk the Line": A creepy and quirky cover, Im not sure if the song did enough to be truly unique on its own to win me over, but I dug it quite a bit - 3.7
18. “Rubicon”: Lmao ew no - 2.1
19. "My Beautiful Leah": Deliciously vicious but sadly short :c Still, thought this was really great on first listen, I've really gotta check more of her stuff - 4.2
20. "Darkjewel": This combined with my feelings for the last song helps prove that I'm developing quite a sweet tooth for these thick, aggressive electronic based tracks. They're so goddamn good man - 4.3
21. "The Morning": Yeah this is enjoyable but kinda lame tbh - 2.9
22. "Darkness": This was fucking all over the place and it was great - 4.0
23. “Music Jail”: Okay yeah this is a blast - 3.9
24. “Take it With Me”: Um so this is the guy that everyone won’t shut up about? This is nice enough I guess but I don’t really get the appeal - 3.3
25. “Homos”: The only funny thing about this is imagining something thinking that this is funny. 2.0

10.27.18 | "Small Bill$"
My sister is obsessed with her first 4 albums, but was disappointed with her last 3. This sounds pretty okay. Very poppy. I remember her older stuff was far more folky and theatrical. I can see why she was disappointed since this has WAY less personality than something like "Sailor Song."

Homos- 2.1, not really enjoyable at all, nor is it funny
Small Bill$- 3.9, fun and unexpected based on her usual sound
Zombie Prostitute- 3.3, at least is was funnier than Ars' rec
Cover Me Up- 4.1, I need to check the rest of this, been putting it off too long |
ArsMoriendi
10.28.18 | "Zombie Prostitute"
I know that this is dark cabaret, but it feels like I'm listening to spa punk for some reason. I think it's the vocals? Also wow this song's about necrophilia? Ew. I guess it fits Halloween?
2.8/5
"Slow Me Down"
Very metal intro. This is kinda bland honestly... I feel like this would've benefited from a darker tone or something. Sounds like it belongs in a 2000s Sonic The Hedgehog game, especially with that title.
2.5/5 |

10.29.18 | "Red Bible" - Avantist (from Avantist) (3rd Rec)

Minushuman24
10.29.18 | 24: Take it with Me - Tom Waits - 3.9 - This may be a bit of a lowball rating, but god damn this is nice.
25: Homos - The Frogs - 2.7 - Ah yeah, that was okay.
26: Small Bill$ - Regina Spektor - 4 - Oh fuck, this rules. This is the first time I have ever heard her.
28: Slow Me Down - Devin Townsend -3.3 - I don't care for the production on this because it's a bit flat, but the chorus is anthemic as fuck. Kind of reminds me of an anime theme song really.
29: Cover Me Up - Jason Isbell - 3.7 - Oh shit, I actually really like this. Country has not been a genre that I find very much enjoyment in, even the older stuff is purely situational. But I think that the production on this and his voice make this surprisingly enjoyable.
30: Red Bible - Avantist -3.6 - Woah, this was a bit of a weird one. Wild as shit. .5 for the sax maaan |
Minushuman24

I'll probably jam Avantist at some point soon |
BlazinBlitzer
10.30.18 | I'm updating this now, but since I kinda messed this up, Metalrain's also viable for the last two days, so I think I'll just throw the "song-a-day" rule out the window and rec 2 songs for the 31st. Is that okay with everyone? |
ArsMoriendi
10.30.18 | Sure |
BlazinBlitzer
10.30.18 | Ok :) |

10.31.18 | @RunOfTheMill, btw when you set up the list, ask Jom for a feature so we get more recs, he's always given them when I asked
Also, These Chains- 4.2, is this some Korean dream pop electronic stuff, idk but it's real good
Vinushka- 3.8, took too long to get heavy |

10.31.18 | Cover me up: Song is kinda slow, but it's a jam. 4.0
Red Bible: This has a lot of interesting this going on. Don't know if I would jam it regulary, but it really sounds fun. 3.5
These Chains: This sounded a little bit all over the place, though it had some great sections. 3.3 |
Papa Universe

11.01.18 | "Cover Me Up"
So far this is pretty mellow relaxing country. I'm tired, so this hits the right spot currently.
3.7/5
"Red Bible"
I like the chaoticness and then hte cihll sax. Fun song. Lots of personality here and very bombastic!
4.2/5
"These Chains"
I already rated this for my rec competition. I loved this just as much as I did last time. Folky Baths as I called it last time. I need to check this album. Seriously, I love this.
4.7/5
"Vinuska"
So metal. Decent bass. The growling ruined it. This is not my thing, but well made, so...

11.01.18 | why oh why did the extra song have to be 10 minutes |
Metalrain
11.01.18 | Hey, it wasn't my idea to make that song the extra. Y'all reap what you sow |
Metalrain
11.01.18 | Plus it's 10 minutes of weird japanese shit, thats gotta hold your attention somehow. |

11.01.18 | Gonna finish this up right after this Sacral Rage album |

11.01.18 | 27. “Zombie Prostitute”: Way better than that other jokey song, the instrumentation here is crazy fun and engaging throughout so like, major points for that despite the eh comedic subject matter - 4.1
28. “Slow Me Down”: Maybe this is a weird comparison, but the way this acts as a sort of overblown rock homage/parody while also being melodically and thematically interesting reminds me a lot of The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Machina” album. Musically the heaviness mixed with the sweet melody does too. Def recommend that project to anyone who dug this - 4.0
29. “Cover Me Up”: Wow that was nice. Didn’t listen as closely as I should but I’m just glad to hear someone rec’ing some proper country at this point - 3.9
31. “These Chains”: Gonna be honest, this delighted me a bit less this time around but I still think it’s a great, really exciting preview for an album I have just got to peep soon - 4.2
32. fuck I forgot to do a write up yesterday when I listened to these but it was good better than I thought it’d be - 3.8 |
Minushuman24
11.01.18 | Spookyween- These Chains - Mid Air Theif - 3.8
Spookyween 2 - Vinushka - Dir En Gray- 4 oh yes, now this is some good metal. |
