K-RnB: trend exploration

Please tell me that you at least recognize at least one K-pop song. Yeah, K-pop seems to be a global trend now. While I think K-pop has produced some bangin stuff, let me introduce to you an even better genre, K-RnB (maybe K-R&B?). Will gradually expand this list. 1Jida
Lucid

Released: 2-19-20

JIDA is a producer who collaborated with a few artists in this album to make some luscious tunes. Lush indeed.

2Seori
?depacse ohw

Released: 5-12-20

First of all, shoutout to J-o-t-well for reviewing these first two entries. I'm really not sure why this ep is titled that way. Anywho, this has some bangin productions. Fun stuff.

She's Fine

Released: 3-19-19

She's fine is another rendition of Luscious K-RnB. It has a lot of variety of moods throughout the album. I would say that the RnB singing is just to elevate the poppiness before hitting those catchy hooks. Although, it has some
issues that I will mention later.

4Hoody
Departure

Released: 10-29-19

Another fun K-RnB who shows a lot of potential but seems underutilized. The production in here sounds a bit generic and doesn't have the edge compared to other contemporary artists. It's quite enjoyable nonetheless.

1719

Released: 4-23-20

Ok now let's address my major complaint about K-RnB in general. A lot of these projects LOVE to include some kind of K-rapping in their tracklist. I'm sorry, dear Korean people, but K hip-hop in general hasn't get refined yet. It feels like they're just trying to copy the old trend from the west. Most of the time, it's just bad. When it's good, it never add anything to an already good RnB track. 1719 has a few tracks like this and it extends to almost all of the albums listed in here. 1719 in general lacks a clear focus that makes K-RnB good (production, etc). It shows potential nonetheless.

2.7
6LEEBADA
THE OCEAN

Released: 3-29-19

LEEBADA is atypical to other contemporary K-RnB artists. She has a special characteristic to her vocal. It's kinda edgy in some way, but artistic to the fullest. I think Korean artists are good at conveying moody/lush atmosphere. Leebada on the other hand is on her own league, she conveys moods in different, indescribable way. This album almost feels like an art pop instead of RnB.

7BAEKHYUN
Delight - The 2nd Mini Album

Released: 5-20-20

If you like fun RnB singing over minimalistic trap beats, this EP is quite enjoyable.

Our Love is Great

Released: 3-18-19

Okay Johnny, sorry for stealing your favorite word to use, "Lush". It's hard to describe this album to anything but LUSH. If you enjoy that JIDA album, this one is a must listen. Anyway, what separates Yerin Baek from her colleagues are refinement in her voice. She sounds mature. The production in here is also sublime, borrowing some reggaeton melody and funky stuff.

4.2
9Mia
Not a Fairytale

Released: 9-11-20

One of the most recent releases in here. Mia has a very cutesy, carefree characteristics. One word to describe this album is lu-, no, playful. The tunes in here are minimalistic to complement Mia's personalities I've mentioned.

10SOLE (KOR)
How we live

Released: 6-26-19

This EP has similar characteristics to the album above, but more affectionate, perhaps flirty.

3.3
11KozyPop
Seoul Vibes Pt.19

Released: 9-23-20

KozyPop, similar to JIDA, is a producer who collaborate with various artists to create chill Hip-hop/RnB tunes. He is a monster on productivity, releasing 6 compilations just this year alone. He focused to create Cozy environment in his music. K-pop + Cozy = KozyPop, ha, get it?

3.2
12Yukika
Soul Lady

Released: 6-21-20

Not really K-RnB but worth to check out nonetheless

Korean City Pop
13Heize
/// (You, Clouds, Rain)

Released: 6-26-17

Quite similar to the album. This EP is another greatly executed project.

3.7
14Aseul
Slow Dance

Released: 3-6-20

Not really K-RnB but worth to check out nonetheless [2]

Electro/Ambient pop, Synthpop, Dreamy vibe.
15Austn
032

Released: 11-9-19

Yet another chillhop/RnB blend mini-album. It's solid and enjoyable, there are not too many things to write home about.

3.3
16SUZANNE
The Distance Between You and Me

Released: 5-18-20

Super instrospective RnB with a lush (not this word again) downtempo feel and T H I C C bass while we're at it. Sadgurl hours. True abecore.

4.3
17YESEO
Damn Rules

Released: 7-14-18

Oh well, what do we have here. An alternative RnB leaning to the maximalist approach. YESEO voice has similar characteristics to a lot of artists in here, which is quite a contrast to the production. If you put another lushy vocal to a headbanging bass drop, will it even fit? Apparently, it actually does!

4.0
18CIFIKA
HANA

Released: 8-31-20

Not really K-RnB but worth to check out nonetheless [3]

Electronic experimental avant pop futurized monstrosity.
19Yerin Baek
Every letter I sent you.

Released: 12-10-19

I like short albums. It sits really well in my ever-decreasing attention span. So when I listen to about a full hour of K-RnB, I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. Well, the answer to the nonexistent question is, yeah, it's too long. But it's good when it's good. Similar to the mini-album that she did.
