13 Days of Candlemass

Hey dudes and dudettes and all people between, October rules. Crisp breezes and a panorama of colors brush the scenery, delicious wafts of cinnamon and nutmeg pour forth from coffee shops, spooky craft festivals commence and even spookier decor adorn the streets. And what amongst these things is truly tha raddest??? The music! It is high time for fun as fuck cornball DOOM, and the best band to ever DOOM is Candlemass. Over the next 13 days I will jam all Candlemass material and put out a Candlemass analysis/retrospective. Is there a point? Hell no! And still I hope you shall come with me upon this decrepit journey through murk and horror, through dimly lit corridors and hellish halls.

Epicus Doomicus Metallicus

And on the first day of Candle-mas my true love gave to me...
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, latin for epic doom metal (ty google translate). What's still astounding to me is that Johan Langquist was a session vocalist and yet the unwavering operatic force behind his voice is equally as iconic as Messiah Marcolin. What he lends to Epicus as opposed to later Candlemass works is a bit more in terms of vocal dynamics, showcasing that while the wicked sorcerers croon off of "Demon's Gate" or "Crystal Ball" is VERY much Candlemass, the mixture of shrill cries from "Under the Sign of the Oak" and almost saccharine singing at the beginning of "A Sorcerer's Pledge" give each song an identity of its own, which does still ring true on Nightfall but eventually starts to taper off. They were also at the top of their game with sweet sweet RIFFS, with gallops that slither in and out and tasty shreds and dismal, trudging riffs that are all the motif of Candlemass.

Nightfall

And on the second day of Candle-mas
Nightfall, latin for "Nightfall". In many ways this is simply a perfect rehash of Epicus but with the Messiah Marcolin's almighty curl-fro at the helm. While it can be said that perhaps the grandeur is upped ever-so-slightly through Messiah's mighty vibrato that rivals most opera singers, gothic interludes and chunky riff game are still v much the repertoire. Bonus points for "At the Gallows End" being likely the first CM track I ever heard, which I distinctly remember being played on a loud speaker at a Watain concert before they opened up for Behemoth. Between that and Demon's Gate I was absofuckinglutely mesmerized at this Halloween-esque cornball Doom, and it was a love whose appetite became insatiable.
