Platy's 25 Best Releases of 2021
Ah, it's finally time! Didn't have as much free time as I did last year, so there won't be any top 40 - but there were still at least 25 albums/EP that slapped pretty hard. |
25 | | Mayday Parade What It Means To Fall Apart
The rise of umbrella man! Mayday Parade is becoming one of the most consistent emo/pop-punk groups out there.
Check Out: One For the Rocks and One For the Scary, Sideways |
24 | | Magdalena Bay Mercurial World
Best Grimes-core album of 2021, without a doubt.
Check Out: Chaeri, You Lose! |
23 | | Psychedelic Porn Crumpets Shyga! The Sunlight Mound
Maybe this isn't the most consistent rock album of this year, but holy hell is it a good time.
Check Out: The Terrors, Mundungus |
22 | | Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Carnage
Nick Cave - The Bad Seeds = Some pretty haunting stuff.
Check Out: White Elephant, Lavender Fields |
21 | | Devil Sold His Soul Loss
I swear, if this just had a little more variety, it would be a top-10 album. As is, it's still damn great and has some hard hitting highlights.
Check Out: Witness Marks, The Narcissist |
20 | | The Dirty Nil Fuck Art
A fun, energetic pop-punk album ended up being exactly what the start of 2021 needed.
Check Out: Damage Control, Doom Boy |
19 | | Poppy Flux
This was a slight disappointment after how stellar EAT was, but this album proves that Poppy can pull off pretty much whatever sound she wants.
Check Out: Her, Hysteria |
18 | | Origami Angel Gami Gang
It's a bit bloated, but Gami Gang might be the biggest guilty pleasure pop-punk album of the year.
Check Out: Mobius Chicken Strip, Tom Holland Oates |
17 | | Bo Burnham Inside (The Songs)
The special itself is a 5/5, but these songs don't have the same impact in pure audio form. Regardless, Burnham is a stellar musician and songwriter.
Check Out: All Eyes On Me, Welcome to the Internet, Bezos I+II |
16 | | Turnstile Glow On
This was my first exposure to this group, and I'm glad I discovered them.
Check Out: Mystery, Don't Play |
15 | | Volbeat Servant Of The Mind
What a bounce back! The last two albums of theirs was pretty meh, but this sure hit the spot.
Check Out: Wait A Minute My Girl, Dagen Før |
14 | | Kanga You And I Will Never Die
For a while, this was my #1 electronic album of the year. Though it got surpassed, this is still a fun time.
Check Out: Home, Moscow |
13 | | Hail the Sun New Age Filth
Easily the best swancore album of the year. This made me feel nostalgic, like I was in high school again. I know that wasn't very long ago, but still.
Check Out: Slander, Solipsism |
12 | | Don Broco Amazing Things
This is a wild, unpredictable time, and probably Don Broco's heaviest to date. They're still as goofy as ever too.
Check Out: Manchester Super Reds No. 1 Fan, Bruce Willis |
11 | | Silent Planet Iridescent
There were two albums this year I almost slept on and didn't include - and this was one of them. This is an all-around stellar metalcore album.
Check Out: Panopticon, The Sound of Sleep |
10 | | Angels and Airwaves Lifeforms
It took me a few listens to really comprehend how good this is - but there's so many solid tracks here. DeLonge is really at the top of his game.
Check Out: Timebomb, Losing My Mind, No More Guns |
9 | | Chevelle NIRATIAS
Is there a band more consistent than Chevelle? As a whole, there's so little complain about with this band, and this album.
Check Out: Remember When, Mars Simula, Peach |
8 | | Knocked Loose A Tear in the Fabric of Life
This EP melted my face off. That's all I really need to say about that.
Check Out: God Knows, Return to Passion |
7 | | Trivium In the Court of the Dragon
Trivium has been on quite the hot streak lately - and this just continues it.
Check Out: In the Court of the Dragon, Feast of Fire |
6 | | Ice Nine Kills The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood
Once you give in to the cheesiness, this becomes such a good time. I've never been a huge fan of horror movies, but this makes me want to go watch the classics.
Check Out: Rainy Day, The Shower Scene, Hip to Be Scared |
5 | | The Devil Wears Prada ZII
Why are they at their best when making themed EP's? I'll never know, but I want more of it.
Check Out: Nightfall, Forlorn |
4 | | Porter Robinson Nurture
Remember when I said there were two albums I almost slept on? This was the second, and it swept me away. Best electronic album of 2021, hands down.
Check Out: Musician, Something Comforting, Look at the Sky |
3 | | Poppy EAT (NXT Soundtrack)
Yes! This is the sound of potential being realized! It's really too bad that she doesn't seem to be sticking to this chaotic/heavy sound, because she pulls it off so well.
Check Out: Eat, Cue, Breeders |
2 | | Every Time I Die Radical
How does one of the most consistently great hardcore bands get EVEN better? I've got no idea, but Every Time I Die just gets better with time.
Check Out: Planet Shit, All This and War, Post Boredom |
1 | | Wolf Alice Blue Weekend
And this is it! I really can't explain why this album struck such a chord with me. Maybe it's because of where I am in my life, or maybe my age, I'm just not sure. But this is shaping up to be a classic.
Check Out: Delicious Things, The Last Man On Earth, Lipstick on the Glass, Smile |
