Clover's Dopest 2016 Jams 3

Making another one of these lists to get my backlog cleared out. Only albums rated 3+ because diverting attention to garbage is a waste of time. Feel free to check stuff out, rec stuff, or trash my taste. I was sick for about a week and with no school or work I had a lot of free time so theres a lot here. All albums listened through the course of Feb 1st - Feb 14th.
1Rihanna
ANTI

[Pop] Rihanna's "mature" pop album. Hyped for well over a year and then dropped for free after TIDAL screwed up (again). Pretty solid collection of pop songs with some outstanding hooks, chill vibes, and overall fun songs. Strewn between a lot of really cringy lyrics (Glitter on your dick tho) and some snorers. 3/5

Spin: Kiss it Better, Desperado, Love On The Brain
2Chairlift
Moth

[Indie Pop] Pretty interesting duo. Production varies between standard pop fare and some more "out there" ideas for pop music. The albums strong points are when the two forces mix for some of the most refreshing indie pop out there. Biggest downside comes from a few tracks that feel really pointless. If a few tracks were removed I'd say this is one of the best pop albums in a while. 3.5/5

Spin: Polymorphing, Ch-Ching, Crying in Public, No Such Thing as Illusion
3Astronautalis
This Is Our Science

[Cheese Hop] Astronautalis combine rock and rap for a finer combination of the two. Cheesy, but incredibly heart felt. 3.5/5
4Kardashev
Peripety

[Deathcore] Damn this album is something else. Just from the heavy keys of the intro track you know you're going to be in for one hell of a ride. Synthesizers are used to build and mold a depraved, bleak atmosphere that stands as a beautiful centerpiece for the bleak performance of the band. The mixture of styles on this record are just simply outstanding. 4.5/5

Spin: Sopor, Somnium, Aurora, Umbra, Lux
5The Receiving End of Sirens
Between the Heart and the Synapse

[Post Hardcore] Poppy post hardcore to the tune of early Thrice. Hard for me to explain, but this is just one of those records that do the genre right without going the extra mile or falling short of anything noteworthy. Flows super well, has great hooks, and what not. 4/5

Spin: The Rival Cycle, The Evidence, Then i Defy You, Flee to the Factory
6Pulp
Different Class

[Indie Rock] Different Class is a different album. Ha.

An album that stands both for well composed pop music, and a commentary on the social class system of the UK in the 80s and 90s. Nothing is sacred and no shame is had, Cocker opens up everything in the boldest, catchiest way possible, and no misstep is made. An outstanding album that truly is a centerpiece for britpop music. 5/5

Spin: Mis-shapes, Common People, i Spy, Disco 2000, Somehting Changed, FEELINGCALLEDLOVE
7The Drones
I See Seaweed

[Alternative Rock] The Drones are undoubtedly one of the best bands to birth from alternative rock music. Liddiard's accent thick vocals spit hard against haunting and beautiful guitar leads and pianos. All of it comes together for one of the best of 2013. 4.5/5

Spin: I See Seaweed, They'll Kill You, The Grey Leader, Why Write A Letter (That You'll Never Send?)
8Denzel Curry
Nostalgic 64

[Hip Hop] Yo mommy aint shit, yo daddy aint shit. Denzel tackles social issues and his life in the most effectively direct way possible. Don't take this as a detractor, on the contrary Nostalgic 64s strongest point is how well it gets it's point across through Denzel's impressive technical skills and outstanding production. 4/5

Spin: Zone 3, Dark and Violent, Mystical Virus Pt. 3, N64, A Day in the Life Pt. 2
9Samurai (UK)
Samurai

[Rock] This is where The Web went after the release of I Spider and retiring the name. The jazz elements and darker atmosphere are dropped and brighter, poppy jazz instrumentals replace it. While it is a shame that The Web never captured the lighting in the bottle of I Spider, this album still has it's own merits. Happy go lucky and enjoyable, if you like some contemporary 70s rock music, then this is for you. 3.5/5

Spin: More Rain, Give A Little Love, As I Dried the Tears Away
10Tindersticks
Tindersticks

[Chamber Rock] A story of depressing and almost pathetic proportions, Tindersticks is the worst story of love and heartbreak that you will ever hear, thrown through a "your special night" filter of late night dancehall performances. Sit down and hear this tale of pathetic woe, and maybe have a good time while you're at it. 4/5

Spin: Nectar, Blood, Sweet Man (Pt. 1, 2, 3), The Walt Blues, City Sickness, Tea Stain, Her
11Scott Walker
Scott

[Chamber Folk] Grandiose and bold, a life story told through the eyes of a suave and mysterious gentleman. It's like the anti-Timbersticks. Or would Timbersticks be the Anti-Walker? 4/5

Spin: Mathlide, Angelica, My Death, The Big Hurt
12Teenage Fanclub
Bandwagonesque

[Pop Rock] The soundtrack to every high school drama film's big dance. 4/5

Spin: The Concept, December, Metal Baby, Sidewinder
13I Monster
Neveroddoreven

[VOCODERS] Seductive genre blending electronic music. Rock, blues, and electronic music collide with smooth sci-fi like synths that sweep through a fine mixture of theatric group vocals and pitchy vocoders. Simply excellent album. 4/5

Spin: Daydream in Blue, Heaven, Who Is She, Sunny Delight, The Big End/Lucifer
14Old Crow Medicine Show
O.C.M.S.

[Bluegrass/Folk] Quirky, plucky bluegrass country music that hits all the sweet spots. Well composed with a nice blend of female/male group vocals and a good pint of alcohol and morbid lyrics to top it off. 4/5

Spin: Tell it To Me, Big Time, Tear it Down, We're All in this Together, Wagon Wheel
15Jason Isbell
Something More Than Free

[Country] Jason Isbell's less than impressive followup to Southeastern is still pretty damn impressive. There's an added pallet of instrumentals with this album, making diversity more wide spread and ambitious. Jason still has the ear for strong songwriting and lyrics, and it all flows together well. Though the intimacy is missing beneath the large production standards. Ah well, still enjoyable at the end of the day. 3.5/5

Spin: If It Takes a Lifetime, To A Band I Loved, 24 Frames, Something More than Free, Husdon Commodore
16The Black Queen
Fever Daydream

[80s Worship] Dillinger Escape Plan's vocalist comes together with other artists to make an 80s worship album. Yeah. Smooth as velvet and with a fine dash of more modern "revival" trends ala electro pop and synthwave that give's it a more refined vibe. Funky basslines and late night car commercial synth leads, it all comes together for what is a very solid side project and another great contribution to the ever growing 80s revival library. 4/5

Spin: Ice to Never, Secret Scream, Distanced, Taman Shud
17M O O N
MOON

[House] That dude who was 90% of the Hotline Miami soundtrack. Quirky electronic music that comes straight out a fever dream. May the wonky, bouncy synths and fuzzy basslines guide you on your quest to bash in as many heads as humanly possible. 3.5/5

Spin: Paris, Crystals, Release
18Elvis Depressedly
New Alhambra

[Folk] It says something when an artist drops an album on Run for Cover and it doesn't suck. Depressedly expands boundaries with longer track times, new styles, and more ambitious instrumentation. It all comes together for a really well made nostalgia fest for depressed people. 4/5

Spin: Thou Shall Not Murder, New Alhambra, Big Break, New Heaven/New Earth
19How Scandinavian
The Kinch Service

[Lo Fi/Rock] Pretty fine EP we have here. Poppy lo-fi rock music with a heavy emphasis on "bitter" lyrics. Go look at it. it's free. 3.5/5

Spin: Fables, Torrents of Spring, Monday, The Flensed
20The Menzingers
On the Impossible Past

[Punk] This album makes me sad. Super depressing pop punk music that isn't garbage like most pop punk. The strained and rough, scratchy vocals from Barnett layered with the smooth higher pitch harmonizing from May add a level of genuinely that is missing from many artists in the genre. And the emphasis of actual personal life stories from the group make them seem like they aren't going through the superficial motions of the genre to get that scene kid pussy.

Great melodies, too. Good all around. 4/5

Spin: Good Things, Burn After Writing, Gates, Mexican Guitars, Nice Things, Freedom Bridge
21Nujabes
Luv(sic) Hexalogy

[Hip Hop] A magnum opus of sorts, the six part series between Nujabes and Shing was a beautiful centerpiece for Nujabes legacy. Nujabes focus on production and sampling of pianos, random vocal speeches, and bass guitar created an intimate atmosphere that Shing drove home with his "pathetic optimism" of self reflection. It was a hell of a 13 year journey, at least. 4.5/5

Spin: all of it
22Weatherbox
Flies In All Directions

[Emo/Pop rock] Do you like The Thermals or Weezer? Well then come on down and listen to some Weatherbox you loser. Pop rock with instances of math technicality here and there. Riffs shred hard and the speak/sing style of the vocals work damn well with the strong hooks here. 4/5

Spin: Pagan Baby, The Devil and Whom, Radio Hive, Drag Out, The Drones, Dark All Night For Us
23Castanets
First Light's Freeze

[Folk/Electronic] Atmospheric female/male duo electronic folk music. Like it's title implies, there is an overwhelming sense of bitter cold that cuts to the bone here. It's an outstanding record. 4/5

Spin: Good Friend Yr Hunger, Bells Aloud, No Voice Was Raised, Into the Night
24As Tall As Lions
As Tall As Lions

[Alt Rock] Those vocals could melt butter. The smoothest of silk. As Tall As Lions self titled album takes jazz rock melodies with a bold sophistication. And serves as a vessel for one of the best voices in the genre. So smooth. 4/5

Spin: Stab City, Love Love Love, Ghosts of york, Be Here Now, Maybe I'm Just Tired
25Van Morrison
Astral Weeks

[Folk] Late to the party on listening to this. 4/5

Spin: Astral Weeks, Beside You, The Way Young Lovers Do, Ballerina
26Love
Forever Changes

[Soul] Late to the party on listening to this. [2] 4/5

Spin: Alone Again, Andmoreagain, The Daily Planet, Maybe The People, The Good Humor, Live and Let Live
27Barcelona
Absolutes

[Indie Rock] Comforting album for the sudden cold rush out here (it was 48 degress last week, wtf happened?). One of those albums that do everything right without going the extra mile but not being enough. 4/5

Spin: Falling Out of Trees, It's About Time, Colors, Come Back, Response, First Floor People, Faded
28mind.in.a.box
Crossroads

[VOCODERRRRRRS] Future pop or something like that. This album is a behemoth of an electronic album. With chuggy industrial trance sounds with vocoded vocalists narrating the futuristic desolate night time cityscape. Very sophisticated and outstanding, it's one of the best in whatever genre it classifies itself as. 4.5/5

Spin: Amnesia, Into the Night, Identity, Fear, Stalkers
29Juno Reactor
Shango

[Trance/World] 4/5
Spin: Pistolero, Insects, Badimo, Masters of the Universe, Nitrogen
30Noisia
Split The Atom

[TRVE DUBSTEP] Noisia's debut album was a massive, loud, and in your face blend of every electronic dance trend thrown threw a blender. It was great. 4/5

Spin: Machine Gun, My World, Split the Atom, Headknot, Red Heat, Alpha Centauri
31DJ Shadow
Endtroducing...

[Hip Hop] Late to the part on listening to this [3] 4/5

Spin: Best Foot Forward, Changeling, What Does Your Soul Look Like, Why Hip Hp Sucks, Midnight
32Say Anything
Hebrews

[Pop Rock] In Defense of the Album... heh.

I suppose anything released after Anarchy would be an instant 3. I just like the mood of this album, the electronic elements work so damn well and Max seems like he is enjoying himself more than he has for a while. Lost My Touch can go burn though. 4/5

Spin: John LcClane, Six Six Six, Kall Me Kubrick, Hebrews, Push
33Say Anything
I Don't Think It Is

[Some angry guy yelling] In Defense of the Album... heh.

I like this record, I feel like it's an anti-Real Boy. It's spontaneous, unapologetic, and flat out angry for the complete opposite reasons A Real Boy was. Sure, it has some patches here and there, and production on the first few tracks are a mess... but I feel like it works for this record. It's something that can't be replicated ever again just because I doubt Bemis will ever feel this pissed off again. So appreciate it. Or don't. Like who even cares about Say Anything in 2016 honestly.

Album art can go burn in a fire. 3.5/5

Spin: 17 Coked Up Speeding, Rum, Goshua, The Bret Easton ellis School of Witchcraft and Wizardy, #Blessed, Attaboy
34Free
Free

[Rock] If I get one more of these damn Jimmy Fallon ads on youtube I am going to choke someone I am not joking this is pissing me off. 4/5

Spin: I'll Be Creepin, Lying in the Sunshin, Trouble on Double Time, Woman, Mourning Sad Morning
35Gorgon City
Sirens

[Deep House] Thank goodness each track has a unique vocalist featured. Or else I wouldnt be able to tell most of these tracks apart.

Well composed, fun deep house that sounds better than most of the crap in this genre. 3.5/5

Spin: Coming Home, Love Like You, Here For You, Real, 6AM, Elevate, Hard On Me, Doing it Wrong
36Eric Prydz
Opus

[Progressive House] I don't know about this being an opus, but it's a pretty damn fine record nonetheless. Good debut for a hardened veteran. 4/5

Spin: Liam, Collider, Last Dragon, Sunset, Breathe, Generate, Opus
37The Out Circuit
Pierce The Empire With A Sound

[Hardcore] 4/5
38Amigo the Devil
Manimals

[Folk/Rock] 4/5
39Paper Rival
Dialog

[Indie Rock] 4/5
40Until the Ribbon Breaks
A Taste of Silver

[Electronic/RnB] 4/5
