Dead Epics

The "epics" lists and the inclusion of the Dead got me thinking that a whole list could be used for the Dead, since they have so many. I have included a live rec.
10The Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead

Viola lee Blues/ the first dead epic, on the studio release the record executives just cut it off, check out the version on Dick's Picks 22 or the Birth of the Dead live sides both are phenomenal.

also, just missing the top 10 is another Pigpen improv vehicle Caution Do Not Stop On Tracks, which came about while hanging out between sets smoking a joint and watching a train go by
9The Grateful Dead
Aoxomoxoa

St. Stephen/ One of the storter Dead epics as well, but add the eleven to the end of it as they did in 68-69 and you have 10-11 minutes of greatness.
8The Grateful Dead
Fillmore East 2/11/69

Turn on your lovelight/ the great Pigpen rave up, he is the master of the improv blues, I included this album because I think it is one of the better versions
7The Grateful Dead
Wake of the Flood

Weather Report Suite/One of the great Weir pieces. The most progressive piece I think the Dead ever did, not just jamming, check out the Dick's picks vol. 1 version
6The Grateful Dead
Shakedown Street

Shakedown St./ actually dissed upon arrival due to heads thinking they sold out to disco, They missed out ,the funk on this tune is unmatched, kind of short for a Dead epic but they stretch it out nicely live.
5The Grateful Dead
Blues for Allah

Help on the Way-Slipknot-Franklin's Tower/ Yes three songs but always performed together, to make one great peice, check out the version on One From the Vault, the intro by Bill Graham adds to the coolness
4The Grateful Dead
Terrapin Station

Terrapin St./ a favorite on this site, it is the shit especially when they perform it in its complete form as on the release Dozin at the Knick, or Another Day in the Sunshine
3The Grateful Dead
Wake of the Flood

Eyes of the world/ Robert Hunter longtime Dead lyricist said it was corny, but man does it swing, please check out the version on Wake Up To Find Out.
2The Grateful Dead
Anthem of The Sun

The other one/ named as in we have Dark Star and The Other one, actually a 3 part song cycle with cryptical envelopment as the bookends. In only Dead style at their first official shows in 04 since Jerry died they started the first of 2 shows with Cryptical and ended the second show with it. The 2/27/69 version on The Complete Fillmore shows of 2/27-3/2 is the shit, also get to hear Jerry be pissed off on stage because of the reverb
1The Grateful Dead
Live/Dead

Dark Star/ pretty much enough said, their magnum opus, from a 2 minute single into a 25 minute monster. Have heard 100 plus version never gets old, Find any live version
