DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Thought I had enough new discoveries since the last one to put something up... |
Egarran
03.18.17 | Eh, it's nothing without your comments. |
butcherboy
03.18.17 | Famous blue raincoat! Such a gut-wrenching song.. I would pick City Sickness for tindersticks.. Awesome list |
danielcardoso
03.18.17 | Nice one Doof, we have a lot of similar favorite picks lol. |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Egarran - I've already written mini essays on most of these songs on the previous list
Thanks dan, butcherb |
theBoneyKing
03.18.17 | Nice Doof. A year later and I still only know 24 of your top 101 songs.
The descriptions did make the old list something special but most of them would be redundant. |
theBoneyKing
03.18.17 | 88 is probably my favorite of the songs that I've heard for the first time since the original list - absolutely incredible song. Love that whole album too even though I know you don't. |
NorthernSkylark
03.18.17 | NICE list, lots of my personal favorites on this |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | I'll talk about any individual picks in these comments but I'm not writing these up again like the previous list, that was a one off. I've reviewed a lot of the albums these are from and spoken about most at length on other lists too. |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | 88 is great, it'll still be there clinging to a top 101 berth in a years time for the next list I'd predict. The competition for places is getting insane now, no space for Pink Floyd, no Eno, no Eels, no Sparklehorse, no Dinosaur Jr...etc |
Ovrot
03.18.17 | I expected more Demilich tbh |
zakalwe
03.18.17 | WHAT'S IT LIKE STICKING PROBES INTO BOXES OF DEAD CHICKEN UNTILL 8'OCLOCK AT NIGHT!!!!!!
Jimmy Eat World > |
Dewinged
03.18.17 | The Real Thing mang |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | OvRot - Raped Embalmed Beauty Sleep nearly made the cut. I'm not joking. |
Divaman
03.18.17 | Whew! I was so afraid I was going to click on this list and find 100 songs by The Tiger Lillies. |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Top 100 Lillies songs is a future list in waiting ye, I'll maybe put up comments for that one too, not sure yet.
My copy of 'The Brothel To The Cemetery' has turned up so expect a new review soon :D |
butcherboy
03.18.17 | Piccadilly lily should be on here, to be fair |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Not heard that tune...will check now |
butcherboy
03.18.17 | And Whore!. Amazing accordion on it.. I'm sure you know |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Whore is classic, the end of the song in particular. I like the depressive cinematic quality to the 'Either Or' picks up there so that's why they made the cut - but believe me there are 30 songs lined up right behind them. As I get to know the other albums better that list will grow too.
The spoken word tune 'Jack' is brilliant as well. |
butcherboy
03.18.17 | They're a fantastic band.. Cheers for all the reviews you're doing |
JamieTwort
03.18.17 | 8, 18 and 20 would almost certainly make my list. Plenty of other great picks here too. |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | I'm enjoying reviewing the discog - it's sort of a joke, and also deadly, deadly serious. |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Thanks Jamie T, Boney, Zak |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.18.17 | 31, 67, 84 and 93 are all personal faves that I feel often get overlooked here - great picks all round! |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | johnnydek - props for bigging up 93, took a long time to realise it's my second favourite Talking Heads |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.18.17 | It's such an infectious tune but never gets brought up! So much love |
kascetcadettt
03.18.17 | lmao doof deleting comments |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | The comment made zero sense |
IronGiant
03.18.17 | props for 36. very underrated song |
Toad
03.18.17 | this list resonates nicely
my friend keeps rec'cing me 96 so i guess i gotta try it |
Drifter
03.18.17 | 11 is one of their best songs, nice |
ArsMoriendi
03.18.17 | Lots of good stuff on here
Pull Up the Roots is the best song on Speaking in Tongues, so props for that |
Tunaboy45
03.18.17 | you know
you know where you are when |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Thanks everyone |
Cygnatti
03.18.17 | serviceable |
altertide0
03.18.17 | as usually with your lists, I have mixed feelings. Definitely glad you put 82 here though, re-listening to that song today has been a very pleasant experience, I misjudged the album terribly if the whole album is on this level |
AsleepInTheBack
03.18.17 | 2 and 3 = yesss.
thought Sufjan would be higher |
Frippertronics
03.18.17 | Needs more Blemish tbh |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | alt - 'mixed feelings' I'd expect to have mixed feelings about anyone else's top 101 song picks
AitB - I actually flirted with having no Sufjan on the list at all, he probably won't make the cut in a year's time.
Fripp - that album is on my shortlist to check, maybe next time. |
talktothehead
03.18.17 | This is a really nice list, though I was honestly surprised to see a lot of artists I knew on here. This must have been a really hard list to make, and In that sense I really have to tip my hat to you Doof. Personally my top 17 would probably be something like (unranked) : Talking Heads - Listening Winds, The Velvet Underground - Heroin, Radiohead - Climbing Up The Walls & How To Disappear Completely, Modest Mouse - Teeth... & Stars... & Lives & Life... (lmao wish I was joking), Pink Floyd - Us and Them, Leonard Cohen - Dress Rehearsal Rag & Famous Blue Raincoat, Alice in Chains - God Am & Rotten Apple, Built to Spill - Made Up Dreams & Untrustable Part 2, Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight, Nirvana - Serve the Servants,
oh and look at that...my ratings were magically wiped while I was writing this comment. how lovely |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Good picks ALA, some overlap there, don't be surprised artists you're checking feature here - you're working through some long established classic bands |
talktothehead
03.18.17 | and yeah ... that was totally supposed to be a top 20 song list btw but I kind of got distracted through the last quarter lol |
Divaman
03.18.17 | My favorite on this list is 18.
I don't know if I could even do a Top 100 songs list. It would be hard enough to do Top 100 albums. |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | I always have a 'Top 100' songs playlist - I just update it every now and then. |
theBoneyKing
03.18.17 | That's neat Doof.
I don't listen to individual songs enough to really know what my top 100 songs are aside from favorites from favorite albums. Realistically there would also be some random popular songs that I never actually listen to actively in my top 100 songs because nostalgia, but I probably wouldn't think of them if I were to make a list like this. |
DafterWainwright
03.18.17 | No Hanson. Void. |
theBoneyKing
03.18.17 | You're daft, man! |
Dylan620
03.18.17 | Quality list Doof, I love almost every tune I know on here (which is admittedly only 25% of the list).
I'd pick 6, 15, 24, 41, 48, and 81 as my favorite tunes from what I've heard by each respective band (though in Mercury Rev's case I've yet to venture beyond Yerself and Deserter's)
I must say though, I'm a tad surprised to see 16 outside the top 10 and the only Gav song on the list |
theBoneyKing
03.18.17 | These days I'd choose Beondsey Stutter over Hard Sun for a Gav song. |
Dylan620
03.18.17 | Same, but "Good Day to Die" over "Bermondsey Stutter." All three are 5/5 songs |
Sniff
03.18.17 | Wrong Songs: Ohia songs :( |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Yeah, only one Gav song. Context is that Sufjan Stevens nearly didn't make the list. Nick Drake, Will Oldham, Bill Callahan and Elliott Smith only got one song each too. |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Sniff - Riding with the Ghost is incredible as far as I'm concerned, good to hear Molina rock |
theBoneyKing
03.18.17 | Nomadic Revery (All Around) is my fave Oldham song so far, easily a top 100 tune. Hoping I'll find many other gems among all those other Oldham albums I got. |
Cygnatti
03.18.17 | 80 is correct btw, im sure i already said that but it needs restating obvs |
theBoneyKing
03.18.17 | Just noticed Wilco got dropped from the ranks - disappointing. |
DoofusWainwright
03.19.17 | Yeah, Wilco are another one. I was thinking Pink Floyd would be the biggest shocker for people here. |
NorthernSkylark
03.19.17 | No Dylan either, but I guess it doesn't shock me |
Divaman
03.19.17 | I agonize just to pick a Top 20 songs for each year. About the only thing I could tell you off the top of my head is that if I did a Top 100 Songs of All Time list, Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" would be on it, and "Welcome to the Machine" also. |
Yotimi
03.20.17 | Frittering rules |
AngryLittleAlchemist
03.26.17 | 4 is one of the worst songs on Ok Computer tbh |
