I think it won't be, in fact it can't be, really. The problem with Amnesiac is that it was released too soon after Kid A, and since it was the same sessions it was viewed as a B-sides collection rather than an actual album (and indeed it is much less cohesive than Kid A so that makes sense).
For The National, on the other hand, it has been the longest gap between albums for them at this point, meaning people are thirsty for more. And indeed in the time since TWFM opinion on it has risen. It has been able to sink into people's consciousnesses to the point that it doesn't even feel like it's their most recent album anymore. And let's face it, aesthetically, The National are perfect, so there's little doubt that this will at the very least be a cohesive listen. Additionally, in the time since TWFM pretty much all of the members of the band have worked in side projects, allowing them to come to new National with a different perspective, having tested some other ideas elsewhere. I highly doubt the new album will be drastically different from their past work, and that's fine, because that's not what The National are about. But I do bet it will be different in subtle, wonderful ways.
So as I said, even if I don't see the classic in it immediately (as was the case with TWFM back in 2013) I bet I will one day. |

01.02.17 | Sun Kil Moon: The Koz has dropped off in a big way since Benji, but the past couple of songs off that double album made me believe he still has some stories to tell. A cautiously optimistic 3.
Father John Misty: 4 at least. Tillman has found his voice. And as long as he keeps using it, he'll be golden. Hell, even a retread of Honeybear's themes would be at least worth a 3.5.
Fleet Foxes: Who knows? They're going in a new direction, and the way Pecknold has described it (folk-soul?) has me thinking "FUCK YES AUTO 5" but there's just as much possibility for it to go wrong. We'll find out. Hard to predict a rating, but, gun to my head, 3.5.
Anathema: Again, a 4 at least. They can do no wrong in my eyes, and I'm sure the new one will continue their winning streak.
Carcass: 3.5. The riffs will be too good to be anything less.
