Doof's Top 100 Albums (UPDATE)
Previous List: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1060512&listid=165376 |
1 | | The The Infected
1 [1] |
2 | | Destroyer Kaputt
2 [2] |
3 | | Radiohead OK Computer
3 [3] |
4 | | The National Trouble Will Find Me
4 [4] |
5 | | Sunhouse Crazy on the Weekend
5 [5] |
6 | | The National Boxer
6 [6] |
7 | | Lambchop Is a woman
7 [8]
Up one spot, this continues to grow on me, as does Lambchop's discography in general - their upcoming 2016 album is my most anticipated release for the rest of 2016. |
8 | | Tindersticks Tindersticks
8 [14]
And Lambchop's sister band also have earned a position jump. Seeing the band live last year has only added to my appreciation of this. |
9 | | Nirvana In Utero
9 [17]
Another big mover, this album has really sunk its hooks in again - sometimes you have an itch that only a tune like 'Milk It' or 'Scentless Apprentice' can scratch. |
10 | | Billy Corgan TheFutureEmbrace
SIAMESE DREAM
10 [15]
Sput needs to sort out the Pumpkins list glitch so use your imaginations people. Three 1993 albums in a row now and all in the top 10, strong year. |
11 | | Thomas Feiner & Anywhen The Opiates Revised
11 [NEW ENTRY]
The artist formerly known as Clover's rec competition winner, this is a stunning album of predominantly ballads with nods to jazz and chamber music. Every song on the album is strong. |
12 | | Glenn Branca The Ascension
12 [NEW ENTRY]
Branca appears to be somewhat of a year zero for a certain style of guitar playing and is the key step in the evolutionary chain for a lot of art rock in the mode of Sonic Youth and post rock in the form of GSY!BE. Ferocious stuff. |
13 | | David Bowie Low
13 [16]
Bowie's greatest album jumps up the list a bit, you probably can guess why I've revisited a lot of his stuff this year. |
14 | | Talking Heads Remain in Light
14 [7]
A faller (tumbler?), I just haven't been on a Talking Heads tip, don't read too much into it. |
15 | | The Residents Not Available
15 [NEW ENTRY]
Phenomenal album, this has possibly been the album to make the greatest impression on me in the last 12 months and has got me slowly working through The Residents back catalogue. Makes something like 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' look comparatively pedestrian. Totally bizarre but there's a logic at work. |
16 | | The National High Violet
16 [11] |
17 | | Mercury Rev Deserter's Songs
17 [10] |
18 | | Songs: Ohia Magnolia Electric Co
18 [21]
This deserved to climb, there's just something about Molina, I listen to his output more than Oldham or Callahan now and this list should reflect that. |
19 | | Robert Wyatt Rock Bottom
19 [12] |
20 | | Talk Talk Laughing Stock
20 [9]
Drops out of the top 10, still one of the most purely beautiful album's on the list. |
21 | | Pink Floyd Animals
21 [13] |
22 | | Nick Drake Five Leaves Left
22 [19] |
23 | | Elliott Smith Either/Or
23 [51]
Big mover, I revisited this a lot this year and realised there are more classic songs on here than I'd given credit. |
24 | | The Flaming Lips The Soft Bulletin
24 [20] |
25 | | R.E.M. Automatic for the People
25 [18] |
26 | | Love Forever Changes
26 [NEW ENTRY]
I've only just started delving into the 60's but this album had been on my list for over a decade to check, the first side is stronger than the second but it doesn't damage it's classic status. The trippy vocals are perfect. |
27 | | Modest Mouse The Moon & Antarctica
27 [22] |
28 | | David Sylvian Secrets of the Beehive
28 [NEW ENTRY]
After checking out a large chunk of the man's back catalogue this year this goes down as my favourite Sylvian release (yes, including all the Japan output). The album has a perfect track flow. |
29 | | Therapy? Troublegum
29 [24] |
30 | | Nirvana Nevermind
30 [25] |
31 | | Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti
31 [42]
Listened to a lot of Zeppelin this year and ended up bumping PG to a 5, I'd overlooked the second disc too much. |
32 | | Radiohead The Bends
32 [23]
Nostalgia is still strong but this is falling... |
33 | | Radiohead Kid A
33 [90]
...woah, and looky here, this is climbing. Obviously I revisited the Radiohead albums this year as they dropped a new one. This is the album to benefit from the renewed attention the most. The middle section of the album around 'In Limbo' was better than I remembered. |
34 | | Sparklehorse It's a Wonderful Life
34 [43]
I had this down as too slight to be a true classic but now I know better, steady climber. |
35 | | Tricky Maxinquaye
35 [38] |
36 | | Eels Electro-Shock Blues
36 [40] |
37 | | Pavement Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
37 [27] |
38 | | Guided by Voices Bee Thousand
38 [NEW ENTRY]
This has it's eyes on usurping Crooked Rain as my favourite lo fi 90's indie album. |
39 | | Tindersticks Tindersticks II
39 [56]
This was closer to the debut in quality than I'd been giving credit. |
40 | | Pixies Doolittle
40 [47] |
41 | | Wu-Tang Clan Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
41 [45] |
42 | | Oneohtrix Point Never Garden of Delete
42 [26[
It's fallen a little but still a good showing for my AOTY 2015 |
43 | | Cass McCombs Mangy Love
43 [NEW ENTRY]
My favourite album of the year so far, a traditional album where every song is strong and it's easily McCombs's most confident release to date. |
44 | | Animal Collective Strawberry Jam
44 [28] |
45 | | Sigur Ros Takk...
45 [29] |
46 | | Sun Kil Moon Benji
46 [49]
I'm very close to bumping this to a 5, need to revisit it more next year, one to watch. |
47 | | Metallica Master of Puppets
47 [31] |
48 | | Roxy Music For Your Pleasure
48 [NEW ENTRY]
Another back catalogue I've been working through this year, this is my favourite so far, though I still haven't checked the debut so perhaps that might be stronger still? |
49 | | Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Skeleton Tree
49 [NEW ENTRY]
Before this album Cave was always an artist i respected but there was an emotional disconnect. No more. |
50 | | Bonnie 'Prince' Billy I See a Darkness
50 [32] |
51 | | Animal Collective Feels
51 [NEW ENTRY]
Ok this is better than 'Merriweather' |
52 | | DJ Shadow Endtroducing...
52 [96]
Big climber, I revisited this to see if it deserved bumping to a 5 and although I still don't believe this is a 5 it is still an excellent album, one that just has a couple of unfortunate lulls. |
53 | | Megadeth Rust in Peace
53 [33] |
54 | | American Music Club United Kingdom
54 [NEW ENTRY]
The perfect AMC atmosphere on this one, a strange release as its effectively a UK only cobbled together compilation, but it just works. |
55 | | Manic Street Preachers The Holy Bible
55 [41] |
56 | | Sonic Youth Daydream Nation
56 [NEW ENTRY]
Leaving this off the previous list was another major derp, I checked this out again thanks to getting into Glenn Branca, want to revisit this some more to decide if it deserves bumping to a 5. |
57 | | Bon Iver Bon Iver, Bon Iver
57 [35]
After giving the new one a few spins I'm thinking this one is safe in it's status as Doof's favourite Bon Iver. |
58 | | Talking Heads Fear of Music
58 [48] |
59 | | Sufjan Stevens Carrie and Lowell
59 [36]
Still great, just increasing competition Sufjan dear lad, you know how it goes |
60 | | Niechec Niechec
60 [NEW ENTRY]
This is the 2016 album that came out of nowhere to knock me off my feet, this is a masterclass in how to imbue complex jazzy compositions with real energy and emotion (take note most sputcore) |
61 | | Slint Spiderland
61 [52] |
62 | | Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral
62 [44] |
63 | | Fleetwood Mac Tusk
63 [55] |
64 | | Sun Kil Moon Ghosts of the Great Highway
64 [57] |
65 | | My Bloody Valentine Loveless
65 [54] |
66 | | Brian Eno Before and After Science
66 [NEW ENTRY]
Currently my favourite of the Eno albums I've investigated, this has potential to become a 5 I just need to live with it a while. |
67 | | Deerhunter Halcyon Digest
67 [58] |
68 | | Yes Close to the Edge
68 [NEW ENTRY]
Of all the smelly prog I've investigated in 2016 this is the one that stood out as top of the pile. 'The Soft Bulletin' owes it a lot that's for sure, I might even check 'Fragile' based on the strength of this. |
69 | | Modest Mouse The Lonesome Crowded West
69 [50] |
70 | | Destroyer Poison Season
70 [34]
Still enjoy this but listening to 'Kaputt' again makes it clear it is a step down. |
71 | | Pavement Slanted and Enchanted
71 [53] |
72 | | Billy Corgan TheFutureEmbrace
72 [39]
MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS
Been listening to this a lot over the last 12 months but it certainly has its weaknesses as a complete album. |
73 | | Sun Kil Moon April
73 [63] |
74 | | Destroyer Streethawk: A Seduction
74 [46] |
75 | | Fishmans Long Season
75 [NEW ENTRY]
Really strange Japanese album with a dreamy atmosphere that contains a few repeated themes that build and fall away in a really addictive way. |
76 | | The Knife Silent Shout
76 [97]
Had this a little low last time. |
77 | | David Bowie Station to Station
77 [60] |
78 | | The The Soul Mining
78 [71] |
79 | | Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool
79 [NEW ENTRY]
Still not sure exactly where this fits in their discog which brings us to... |
80 | | Radiohead In Rainbows
80 [30]
...a big faller, I went back to this and Kid A and it was a real surprise how much it changed my opinion on both. |
81 | | Gas Pop
81 [83]
Still my favourite ambient album... |
82 | | David Sylvian Gone To Earth
82 {NEW ENTRY]
...saying that Side 2 of this double album has some great ambient work on it. |
83 | | Portishead Portishead
83 [76] |
84 | | R.E.M. Murmur
84 [72] |
85 | | Pearl Jam Vitalogy
85 [67] |
86 | | The Psychedelic Furs Talk Talk Talk
86 [NEW ENTRY]
Really solid early 80s album, vocal style takes a while to grow on you I'll admit but once it does this is great. |
87 | | Gavin Clark Beautiful Skeletons
87 [65] |
88 | | The Blue Nile Hats
88 [NEW ENTRY]
This is better than the Lewis album for that late night sad-times evocative hit. 'Let's Go Out Tonight' is one of my favourite songs of all time now. |
89 | | Tom Waits Rain Dogs
89 [59]
This has grown off me a little, it isn't a repeat spins sort of album, you have to be in a very particular mood. Still impressive of course. |
90 | | Bark Psychosis Hex
90 [74] |
91 | | The Residents Meet the Residents
91 [NEW ENTRY]
Another that could climb, for now I've only listened under 20 times or so. Funny but never disposable. |
92 | | Portishead Third
92 [79] |
93 | | Shearwater Rook
93 [80] |
94 | | Faith No More Angel Dust
94 [68] |
95 | | David Bowie Blackstar
95 [85]
Be sad if this drops out of the top 100 by next year |
96 | | Run the Jewels Run the Jewels 2
96 [37]
Ok ok, sput you've worn down my resistance concerning this album a bit now. It's still fun imo but ok maybe slightly disposable too. Was still hoping they'd drop a new one in 2016. |
97 | | Massive Attack Blue Lines
97 [89] |
98 | | Everything Everything Get To Heaven
98 [62]
I still love my baby...just not quite as much. |
99 | | The Drones Feelin Kinda Free
99 [NEW ENTRY]
2016 has been a great year for music, the quality being such that you can almost forget about an album like this one. This is how to be angry in 2016. |
100 | | Foetus Nail
100 [NEW ENTRY]
The best thing I've heard from Thirlwell and has a load of similarities to 'Infected'. |
101 | | David Lynch Eraserhead OST
This is my one 5 that doesn't make the list as it's a soundtrack and a very peculiar one at that.
Below is a list of the fallen:
