08.28.19 | For a couple months this year I did a 20:4 split 4 days a week (gym days) and more like a 17:7 split on rest days. Weekends I didn't care, I just didn't go hog wild with bad food.
I've tried so many diet and exercise routines, and IF was the only time I saw noticeable results. I was doing it with a caloric deficit while doing intense cardio based things (jump rope, supersets of fast paced bodyweight movements, jamball and kettlebell stuff, mostly resistance and calorie burning moves in general, and lots of core centric moves).
I'll probably do it again at the beginning of the year so I can try and slim down for da summa. |

08.28.19 | Don't make dieting any harder than it needs to be. IF, when stripped down, follows the same basic principle as all other diets:
Calories in, calories out. Create a caloric deficit, lose weight. Simple.
Only reason to do IF is if it fits into your schedule and makes your life/daily routine easier (i.e. don't have time to eat breakfast in morning, work is always too busy at lunch, etc.). |
ArsMoriendi
08.28.19 | My friend does, and I tried it, but it wasn't for me.

08.28.19 | I just stick to a regular diet as well. Try to eat healthy, eliminate unnecessary stuff, exercise daily, and still allow myself to enjoy a treat every once in a while. I've tried other avenues but they either didn't work or made me feel miserable. I'm comfortable where I'm at now. |
Sinternet
08.28.19 | I do this. 20/4 every day, but usually I just eat one big meal a day. It's good shit, and I can break it whenever for eating out with friends and go back easily. |

08.28.19 | "Don't make dieting any harder than it needs to be. IF, when stripped down, follows the same basic principle as all other diets:

The problem with this statement, which is a common thought, is the "lose weight" part. Everyone has different goals. I am not a big person, so I don't have weight to lose in a traditional sense. However, I do different diet and exercise routines for different results.
When I do IF with a caloric deficit, technically yes it should make me lose weight via cutting fat. However, I tend to maintain weight while doing this. I'm sure there is some offset with any muscle growth or strengthening that happens. |
Josh D.
08.28.19 | Another reason I did IF was after I found out about autophagy. It has health benefits beyond fitness reasons (a guy won the Nobel Prize in 2016 for his findings). Basically when induced it can recycle bad cells, get rid of damaged proteins, stuff along those lines. But of course it is also a metabolic switch that can make your body use what's already in your body for energy. It's achieved through nutrient deficiency, so that's where the fasting came in.
You should look up some basic explainers on autophagy on YouTube if you want to get really deep into IF stuff. I even found a study showing coffee helped induced autophagy in mice, which was good news for me because I guzzle coffee every single day. |

Didn't know Sin was mad into IF, that's interesting!
& Thanks Josh for the write up!
I'm also not doing it for weight reasons - I've been lean since I was 12. Historically when I fasted once a month (for spiritual reasons), my mind felt super clear that day & the day after. & That's been my experience thus far this past week doing IF. This was why I started doing IF, along with it helping me sleep better.
@Ramon. Hunger is generally moderate and hasn't been overriding my brain to eat foods I wouldn't necessarily want health-wise. The food I crave when I make the time to eat is never junk. I've eat pretty dang clean the past few years, but on impulse I'd grab a cookie or beer I didn't need. This impulse sensation hasn't been happening the past few days. Things may change the more I do it. But I appreciate all this discussion happening! |
SymbolicInTime
08.28.19 | Seen it work well for others plenty of times. But it just simply does not fit into my work/life schedule at all so I've never been able to take advantage of it. (Speaking purely from the strict timing protocols when you're trying to do this while not sacrificing muscle). The one time I did find a way to stick to it for a month or so, my energy was so awful that I just stopped. |

08.28.19 | I tried to but my body can't handle fasting for more than a bit over 24 hours at the moment, so I'll do it when I actually can, I want to do five days at least. |
adr
08.28.19 | yeah i've done it combined with Keto, lost around 80~ pounds in 8 months, pretty much never had cravings and felt really satisfied with one or two good meals. Definitely felt more energized too. I've also done 5 days water fast (with coffee in the mornings) and probably because i've already been in state of ketosis, but it was surprisingly easy. |
CugnoBrasso
08.28.19 | I used to fast two days every month until a couple of months ago. Now I'm in a pretty surreal point in my life so I'm waiting for things to settle down before starting again.
I couldn't feel any benefit though... I remember breaking my first fast with a Schwarzwälder cake and spending the rest of the day on the toilet. |
dbizzles
08.28.19 | Less intense but I've been doing 14:10 for the last few months and I like it, it's very manageable. Initially was very hungry in the morning. Discipline goes down a bit on the weekends though. |
Josh D.
08.28.19 | For any fasting, I always recommend doing at least 15:9. A lot of people don't even bother unless they do 16:8 split. |
dbizzles
08.28.19 | See, I can understand that, but 14-10 works very well for my work and work out schedule- especially when considering my family. Not to mention, I already feel better since I started it anyway. I guess I could try to stretch it one more hour.
Also, this is why I started doing it as well once I started paying mor attention to my diet:
'It has health benefits beyond fitness reasons (a guy won the Nobel Prize in 2016 for his findings). Basically when induced it can recycle bad cells, get rid of damaged proteins, stuff along those lines. 08.29.19 | "IF, when stripped down, follows the same basic principle as all other diets"
My understanding was that contrary to other diets IF helps the liver balance insulin levels which helps metabolism. |
Josh D.
08.29.19 | Pancreas excretes insulin.
Your body's preferred energy source is taking carbohydrates and converting it to glucose, then storing the rest as glycogen in muscles. Obviously this means it puts fat aside as well (I always think of insulin as a "fat storage hormone").
I think the thing with fasting, and when I did IF I worked out fasted and didn't break it until 3 hours after the gym, is that by keeping insulin low, your body isn't grabbing what it usually does for energy, so it has to go somewhere else. It can break down fat cells through the liver into ketone bodies, it can start gluconeogenesis, etc. But the point is it's taking what's already in you for energy, which should result in burning fat. In short, insulin levels staying low long enough eventually makes the body start releasing other things already stored to burn for energy. |

08.29.19 | I've been eating once a day, after work, for about a year now. Once you get used to it, the feeling of hunger won't come until it's time to eat again. Only the first couple of days are hard, then it becomes second nature. |

Lmao funny you bring that up. A few weeks ago something happened with this guy that goes to my gym. I mostly get along with him but he often picks fights when out drinking because he roids up all year round and took some kickboxing classes.
