| Build-an-Album II, R11(P3): Bring Out Yer Dead
Oh man, what hijinks await us now?! | 1 | | Forest Stream Tears of Mortal Solitude
It’s time to d-d-d-ddddo the thing where we review our last time together on the madness that is Build-an-Album! The genre was DOOM METAL, the theme was MAXIMUM EPICNESS, and each submitted album needed to reach the hour-long mark with seven songs. An additional requirement stated that any album’s longest track had to be placed in the middle as a centerpiece. The “dumb rule” for the round forced contestants to get worldly; at least four different countries had to be represented by a song. How close was the competition? Were any critical errors made? Who pulled off the elusive W? All this and more discovered below… | 2 | | Fvneral Fvkk Carnal Confessions
Tyman's album: Songs individually here were impressive! The only potential knock was that cohesion wasn't 100%, but it's a minor gripe; the plethora of of epic riffs and their variety made this highly addictive. Things got harsher as the record progressed, adding further layers to the large scale the tracks exhibited, with a given exploring considerable ground and being (in doom terms) quite active and dynamic, such as the second half transitions in track 1 and track 5. Good vocal performances, especially early on, were the icing on the cake. Excellent work! | 3 | | Ereb Altor By Honour
Sint's album: The approach here was unique: songs supplied an intimidating level of heaviness, creating a weighty feel that was complemented well by how *ugly* tracks could become. The riffs were not as 'epic' as hoped, but their dirtiness helped to compensate, as well as the suffocating dissonance and liberal slow tempo abuse. Little touches like track 1's almost folksy vibe were nice, and track 3 was just plain massive. If it had a big more oopmh and epicness, it would have scored a bit higher, but things are cutthroat now unfortunately. A good attempt nevertheless. | 4 | | My Dying Bride The Angel and the Dark River
Phero's album: This album was a miscalculation. Though it started off strong and featured an ideal flow—the way it could merge the atmosphere of track 1 with track 2’s unbridled fuzziness and track 3’s pure heaviness was awesome—far too much reliance was placed upon the titanic centerpiece. All that came before led to it, and all that came after needed to adequately follow it. The problem was, the gamble didn’t pay off; the movements of track 4 were agonizingly minimal, repeated into oblivion, and seemed entirely aimless, never appearing to have much reasoning to their direction. The flow fell apart with track 5’s vastly different tone, and it was a steady downhill trek from there. Even the ‘epic’ scale seemed to decrease, demonstrating how, while not necessarily *awful*, this submission entirely lost the plot. An unfortunate result. | 5 | | Candlemass Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Steak's album: Lot of nice old school vibes here with great vocal performances, although I felt the epic riffs were lacking at points and it was more about the overall vibe/scope. That was quite similar to Sint, and yes, it is a nitpick, but that's what the competition has come too! The consistency and flow were all on point without once leading to a jarring transition, which is always a plus, but the general quality wasn't up to par in my estimation. There needed to be like the opener to really push this forward, making it seem a bit less desirable compared to peer submissions. Not bad, but not enough to wow me. | 6 | | Procession (CL) To Reap Heavens Apart
Sloth's album: Now this was epic. From the varied vocal performances to the variety of riffs, this was a delicious package of doom that could throw down and also embark upon engaging journeys. Much of the singing here was a highlight; having so many talented clean vocalists was a massive boon for this record’s success, and they were able to match the dynamic shifting of tunes, such as track 2’s beastly second half. However, when called for, the album could delve into static-laden, heavy-as-fuck thrills, such as the jam-session-esque proceedings of the centerpiece tune. A very complete effort, and it’s the perfect encapsulation of what the round called for. Excellent flow and consistency on top of that! | 7 | | The Gathering Nighttime Birds
Johnny's album: I appreciated unique flow to this since it was literally made into a full album experience. It made the transitions and the progression of the record as a whole very engaging, rising and falling as the tracks themselves rose and fell in tension. I felt like the epic riffs were again lacking in favor of overall spectacle, but the album was able to provide in that regard, especially with regards to the vast array of vocal performances and the inclusion of some underground picks that took risks. This was likely the most atmospheric of the submissions this round, so it had its own special aura to it when stacked against others, and its centerpiece was certainly an engrossing tune to travel through. However, that x factor of BIG RIFF wasn't quite there to where it could move further. That being said, I enjoyed the methodology practiced here and the experience was pretty awesome. | 8 | | Forest Stream Tears of Mortal Solitude
We’ve officially moved on from doom metal! Surely that means things get a bit happier from here on out, right? Or not, I don’t know. There’s still a few rounds of suffering left, but the finale approaches! Let’s wrap up Survivor-Lite one last time. But first: placements!
FIRST PLACE: Sloth
SECOND PLACE: Tyman
THIRD PLACE: Johnny
And there it is: the last placements for this round of gimmicks. Take it in. Take it aaaaallll in. The journey is over. Now we see the ultimate result! | 9 | | Black Peaks All That Divides
It had some rough edges to it, but the team aspect of these past few rounds was very entertaining! I expected perhaps a bit more backstabbing in the spirit of Survivor, but hey, you can’t always get what you want. Anyways, it’s time
for a dramatic
DRUMROLL
AND SUSPENSE
The victors are ERECT BUSINESS once more! It has been a dominant near sweep of the FIASCO SHAMPIONS, who are on the elimination block again. | 10 | | Black Peaks All That Divides
With the team only having two members left, elimination can't be handled normally as it would be an automatic stalemate. As such, overall scores needed to be considered, and the usual process was turned into number's game: whoever had the lowest score on the squad was out by default.
As such, our final scores look like:
Sloth: 4.3
Ty: 4.2
Johnny: 4
Sint: 3.9
Steak: 3.8
Phero: 3.3
This means PHERO has been escorted out of the building. Tough luck, but it had to come down to the wire in some regard, and key mistakes sunk the ship. Thus, Survivor is totally, fully, forever finished! | 11 | | Such Gold The New Sidewalk
We have officially reached the FINAL FIVE. That means that only three rounds remain before this is completely, 100% finished with our last three placings, which will be in the prize pool. These next few rounds are going to demand your highest effort and best album-construction abilities; there can be no big mistakes, or else your score may decrease greatly. That’s PHASE III, baby. It’s supremely cutthroat, even moreso than it already has been.
Since this has gone on long enough to reach the holiday season, I’m feeling generous. As such, here’s what’s on the line for those still with us:
1ST: $50 cash prize OR mech equivalent
2ND: $30 cash prize OR merch equivalent
3RD: $15 cash price OR merch equivalent
That’s right; the prizes have gone UP. Even more reasons to bring your top-shelf effort. | 12 | | Macho Man Randy Savage Be A Man
After having to deal with a myriad of gimmicks, I’m sure you’re wondering what exactly Phase III has in store for you poor mortals. And that answer is… nothing. Well *mostly* nothing. After having so many outside factors in past rounds, I figured the finale would work best if it went back to good old-fashioned Build-an-Album where sheer grit and album quality prevail above all else. So I guess the gimmick is NO GIMMICKS.
However, there is one change: how tracks are dibbed and how albums are locked will look different going forward. There will be a dibbing order, with order determined by how well each contestant has placed in the past! The more top finishes, the better. Each user is able to claim/dib up to 15 tracks on their turn. Once they have completed their claims, the turn passes to whoever is next, and so on and so on. These phases occur on the first day of a new round and potentially the second if timezones conflict. Stalling on a turn for too long equals a forfeit of a dibbin | 13 | | Macho Man Randy Savage Be A Man
Placements were weighed as 5pts for first, 3pts for second, and 1pt for third. Upon reviewing placement history, here is our determined order:
1. Johnny
2. Steak
3. Tyman
4. Sloth
5. Sinternet
We start at 1 and work our way down. As aforementioned, DON’T MISS YOUR SLOT. Otherwise it is forfeited, faded, gone into the nether. You must be vigilant!
Of additional consideration is one last “point of no return” rule. It pertains to ‘locking’ in an album. Once you submit a playlist, it is considered LOCKED. So if you post a draft and then need to tinker with it—oops, you’re locked in. When a record is submitted, it must be ready to go; no exceptions!
Sound good? Then let’s move along to our next genre… | 14 | | Jon Brion Synecdoche, New York OST
Well, this corner of the wheel looks really dusty. Must be a very old genre… woah. Does that say CLASSICAL? Huh. I didn’t even remember putting that there. How about that! I guess we need to brush off any music theory degrees and really dive into the intricacies of classical shenanigans. Not really a category I expected to pop up, but that’s just the beauty of chucking a bunch of labels into a pot. Dance like it’s the 1800s or something. | 15 | | Macho Man Randy Savage Be A Man
The theme for this round will be CINEMATIC SCOPE. Classical arrangements are often the accompaniment for movie scenes, stage performances, and so on. Your mission this go-around is to style you LP around *something*; it could be a TV show or a film or a play, but it must be used as a soundtrack for moments you’d watch or read. That means each song should have a story or otherwise fulfill a purpose for a narrative. These can be things you make up or you can lean on existing IPs; the creative freedom is up to you!
To reflect that freedom, the track limit is set to 15, with a duration ceiling of 1 hour. You can choose to get as close to that limit (track-wise and length-wise) as possible or make something brief; entirely up to you! There is no particular recipe for success in terms of length here, as a lot depends on song quality in general and adherence to a concept. | 16 | | Macho Man Randy Savage Be A Man
Classical is usually understood to be instrumental, but it can occasionally feature a vocal element from choirs or soloists and such. Dismiss those before it’s too late! This “dumb rule” is another throwback to the last iteration of Build-an-Album; voices are OFF. You cannot include any song that has a vocal component of any kind. That includes samples and even humming or whistling. If it has someone using their vocal chords in some way, it is capital ‘B’ banned. And I mean that in a “you score 0” way. That is a very strict and clear punishment, so make sure to avoid it! | 17 | | Jon Brion Synecdoche, New York OST
SUMMARY:
Genre = Classical
Theme = Cinematic Scope
Requirement = 15 track limit; album duration ceiling of 1hour
“dumb rule” = voices off/instrumental tracks only
“point of no return” = no repeat songs; can only use an artist once for your album; submitted albums are permanently locked in | 18 | | Modest Mouse We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

You scared? Me too... | MarsKid
11.23.22 | So let me clarify because I'll probably get many other similar (good!) questions:
The expectation here isn't that you use only 'traditional' classical tracks. I don't assume you to be experts, and I'm not either, so I'm not going to hold any of us to that standard. I'm leaving the door open to any sort of classical arrangement, which could include soundtracks from film, games, and so on.
Obviously stay close to the core values/elements of the genre and don't start tossing in electric guitars and shit. I trust your judgement. I'll leave the door relatively open for creativity, but if you ever have doubts about something, either:
1. ask me first
2. just don't do it.
Hope that helps! | MarsKid
11.23.22 | "is any instrumental piece with an orchestral or chamber or solo (on classical instrument) arrangement acceptable for this"
I believe this can qualify, yes. As long as everything is limited to classical instruments and the like. And no vocals whatsoever. | Sinternet

"As long as everything is limited to classical instruments and the like."
so does this exclude classical pieces with electric/electronic instrumentation? | MarsKid

11.23.22 | This is gonna be hard.
What happens if I lock in an album, before the other's have their dibs done | MarsKid
11.23.22 | No, you have that time period to dib songs. Whatever you want to claim in that span, you can claim, and it's off the board 100% for anyone else.
Playlists can be submitted anytime before or on the deadline (TBT because holiday weekend) but are 100% locked when submitted.

11.30.22 | The Great Christmas Jerk-Off
A story about a teenage boy working at a retail store in the mall at Christmas time.
1) Susie’s Dreamhouse/Store Montage: First scene starts out with your boy rocking up for his first day on the job at a department store in the mall. It is the start of December, and all the Christmas decorations are up. In this scene the boy is shown how to do his job, gift wrapping, stocking shelves, greeting customers, etc. he is a little shy and timid at first, which the slower christmasy music reflects. He is getting sleepy from his first shift, and then the music picks up as his shift is over, and excitement fills the air, as he walks through the mall and goes home.
2) Four Seasons, Spring: Next scene, the boy is in his bedroom full of joy, thinking he has the best job in the world. Laying blissfully in bed he thinks about the coming few days and how exciting they will be, looking forward to Christmas, and reminiscing about past Christmases in a positive light.
3) Waltz of the flowers: 3rd scene is a montage of the next couple of weeks at work. You see the boy getting better and better at his job, BECOMING A MASTER OF HIS RETAIL CRAFT. As the song picks up the sound of the waltz, you see the boy dancing through the aisles of the store, effortlessly filing up the shelves. You see a happy boy greeting customers, getting better and faster at wrapping gifts. Just being all round awesome at his job, and loving every aspect of it. The pace of the boy’s work increases with the pace of the song, and by the end of the song, he is worn out, you see him lying in bed, still happy, but exhausted.
4) Vom Himmel Hoch Da Komm’ Ich Her: 4th scene, it’s the last week before Christmas, and the teenager has become apathetic, and bored of his job. The solemnness and slowness of the music reflects the tiredness and boredom of the teenager, going about his duties but only half caring. The music picks up a little bit, but in a sarcastic way the boy, pretends to enjoy his work, the whole time just wanting to go home. It slows down at around the 3 minute mark, where we see the boy dragging his feet walking home, and slumping on his bead exhausted, he slams his door.
| SlothcoreSam
11.30.22 | 5) The Thieving Magpie: THAT SCENE, as any good teenage boy knows, the best way to put the misery and boredom of the shift out of his head is to STROKE IT. The scene starts by the boy getting his best, crinkled up sears underwear catalogue from under his bed, and starting to masturbate. As the music's pace increases, the wanking quickens. Faster and faster, in line with the music, until both the boy and the song climax at the same time. And he is asleep.
6) The attack on the house: The 6th scene is the boy arriving to work on his last shift 2 hours before the store opens to get the shop ready. It is 2 days before xmas, and the boy is trying to hide from his supervisor, the music playfully bounces around, as the boy sneaks up and down aisles, trying to avoid his boss, but he keeps getting spotted and put to work. At one point he pretends he is a mannequin, but this doesn’t work. Another time, as the music sounds a bit more blissful, he thinks he has found the perfect hiding spot in the toilets, but the manager quickly comes in and shouts him out. A bit more hiding and pretending to work, and it is time for the store to open, so his boss makes him stand out the front to greet the customers.
7) The green knight Ride In: The 7th scene is the boy staring at the clock, with an impending sense of doom, the clicking sound, (originally meant to be horse hoofs musically), in this context, represent the ticking of the clocks.
8) Prelude: The 8th scene is more suspense building as the doors open to the store, and the mall respectively, and the boy witnesses the herd of last minute shoppers walking through the mall and getting closer and closer to his department store.
| SlothcoreSam
11.30.22 | 9) Jingle Bells: The 9th scene reflects the customers experience, the store is open and people are rushing around the place grabbing everything they can. Children are happy, it is over the top Christmas montage of everything retail Christmas, and the boy hates it, but this scene is the perspective of the store and the shoppers, and shows the busyness.
10) Glorification of the Chosen One: The 10th Scene, and we are now back to the boy, and the anger he is feeling inside, so sick of xmas and his job. The scene is just the boy’s experience now, seeing everything as an image of hell, he has a red face, and steam coming out of his ears.
11) Totentanz: The 11th Scene, is the boy going through the last minutes of his shift, still angry, and exhausted, he bites his tongue, grits his teeth and sucks up the last few minutes of his last shift before xmas. The song peaks, and he finishes up, slowly walking home as the music quietens, he gets into bed, exhausted but glad to be finished work.
12) Cello Prelude: The 12th Scene, the dream. In this scene the boy is asleep and dreaming and in his dreams he is visited by the ghost of his former youth, excited by what Christmas meant, and the joy of going to the mall.
13) Troika: The 13th scene, sees the boy wake up, to a beautiful sunny Christmas Eve, snow glistening, this reflects the first 30 second intro of the song. As the Song kicks into gear, we see the boy excited and happy again, but now in a hissy as he forgot to buy any of his family gifts, as he was too busy working. So within this scene we see the boy shopping at the same mall he works at, but now he is on the consumer side, and he is happy, and a xmas shopping montage ensues.
14) A Christmas Festival: The 14th and final is set on Christmas Day, the boy wakes up, and is excited as he was in his youth. He greets his family. Does all the Christmas things his family does. Plays with his siblings, exchanges gifts, etc. Goes outside and gives gifts to his friends, and some rough sleepers. Then he is back inside for xmas dinner, the end.

quick question - do we have to add a narrative like sloth did or just give a geral angle for what the playlist is supposed to represent? | MarsKid
11.30.22 | You can go as ham as you want with descriptions or as little ham. That's ultimately up to you!! Whatever you feel works best for your music. | SlothcoreSam
11.30.22 | It's all good Phonnyofthewell, you never locked in any song, or part, or section of the whole orchestral work, you just dibbsed it as a whole, then never chose it in your final.
Where as I chose 1 song from the album, or in this case 1 part from the orchestra, not the whole 35 minutes.
You can't dibs a whole album, or full concert piece anyway. | MarsKid
11.30.22 | So this arises from an issue over what defines a singular song/symphony. The assumption was that the Stravinsky song was very much one singular entity as opposed to something broken into identifiable episodes that can be picked from. Something like "The Great Escape" by Seventh Wonder, which is officially 30min. altogether and is not broken up despite having many distinct movements, cannot be divided into parts that are then claimed, whereas "Underworld" by Persefone cannot be totally dibbed, as it is individually divided despite being intended to function as an individual song.
The Rite symphony has the aforementioned characteristic where it has separate sections that are each divided, and then internally divided. As such, the original ruling is inapplicable since it only pertains to an unbroken piece. This is also due to my false assumption from the get-go, for which I apologize for creating confusion and wrong impressions.
I'm calling it a wash for now because of the inconsistency I created + the fact that the symphony is traditionally divided into two parts, which means it as a whole shouldn't be 100% dibbed even when considering that prior verdict. | MarsKid
11.30.22 | tl;dr the original ruling was confusing and even in that case the symphony shouldn't have been 100% dibbed as it is written with at least two separate parts. | Uzumaki
12.01.22 | Weak move, Steak. | MarsKid

12.01.22 | I’m not going to give you an in depth storyline, I’ll let the music do the talking and your imagination do the creating, but let me provide the basic concept of what is known as “The NeverEnding Dream.” The clock strikes midnight and our main character here is thrown into a hazy fog of confusion, giving way to a beautiful landscape of nature (I mean, look at the album cover that the second track is from to get the picture) [Tracks 1 and 2]. Soon after arriving in this haven of beauty, the character is confronted by the supernatural forces of this realm, giving a sense of rising tension and epic clamor in the story [End of track 2 through track 5]. It’s a strange feeling of the majestic and the chaotic, bubbling into this sensation of terrifying excitement [End of track 5 through track 6]. Yet as the dust settles among this supernatural realm, the character is left alone, feeling empty after being abandoned by what they just beheld. There’s a strong longing to be felt, an almost desire for what once was [Track 7]. Yet as the story comes to an end, the final piano chords feel almost dark and slightly sinister as they give way once more to the opening of the first track [Track 8 which repeats back into track 1, creating an unsettling cycle]. And now, the clock strikes midnight… | MarsKid
