Devin Townsend Ranked

Keep in mind, this is my opinion only. Feel free to leave comments!
23Devin Townsend
Devlab

Devin's first ambient/electronica attempt. This is a collection of noises, soundscapes, and interesting 'hot melt glue gun' bits. Not a bad album by any means, just dark ambient/drone/noise music isn't my thing.
22Devin Townsend
The Hummer

Devin's second ambient release, this time dealing more with soundscapes. You can hear waves crashing, morse code, and faint speaking. Ambient isn't entirely my cup of tea, but it's great sleeping music or for calming down.
21Punky Bruster
Cooked on Phonics

A joke album telling the tale of a death metal band called Cryptic Coroner selling out and becoming pop punk legends Punky Bruster. A fun, lighthearted 'take that' to those Green Day-style bands who played 3 chords and become millionaires. Standout tracks here are Fake Punk, Metal Dilemma, and Wallet Chain.
20Strapping Young Lad
Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing

This album definitely lives up to its title. Oh my lord. This is insane. For Devin's first release on his own, this sure packs a few punches. Standouts include S.Y.L., In the Rainy Season, and Cod Metal King.
19Casualties of Cool
Casualties of Cool

Devin and Che Dorval (from Ki) decide to set out and make some haunted Johnny Cash space country. No seriously. That's how Devin described it. It's an interesting concept, and it's entirely new territory for Dev. It's great late night music, and just as soothing as Ki or Ghost. Standouts are Daddy, Forgive Me, and Deathscope.
18Strapping Young Lad
The New Black

Devin at this point incorporates more groovy and melodic styles into SYL's final release, as opposed to the chaotic nature of City or Alien. Definitely has some fun tunes in here, like Monument, Far Beyond Metal, and Almost Again.
17Devin Townsend Project
Epicloud

This is like Addicted, but instead of pop-infused metal, it's more of a pop-infused hard rock. It's catchy, fun, and certainly epic and loud. Fun for beginners into Devin's stuff. Standouts are Where We Belong, the re-recording of Kingdom, and Grace.
16Devin Townsend Project
Z2

Ok, this is the review for the first disc, Sky Blue. To me, it seemed like a continuation of Epicloud. Not a bad thing at all, just nothing really new to present to the table. Nevertheless, there's some really solid tunes on here. Standouts for me include A New Reign, Universal Flame, and Before We Die.
15The Devin Townsend Band
Synchestra

The second and final attempt of the DTB, it's a bit of a wildcard. Drawing influences from symphonic prog, primitive music styles, and progressive rock and metal, this album is definitely all over the place. Man, it feels weird putting it so low. Just goes to show you how fantastic all of Devin's stuff is if #15 is still Grade-A material! Standout tracks are Triumph, Pixillate, and Notes from Africa.
14Devin Townsend Project
Z2

Ok. This is a review for the sequel to Ziltoid the Omniscient, Dark Matters. So although this album has a lot more of the talking and voice acting, the music is very solid and definitely has some tunes you can jam along to. Standouts are Ziltoidian Empire, March of the Poozers, and Ziltoid Goes Home.
13Devin Townsend
Physicist

Although Devin has said this is his least favorite of his albums, if you can see through the not-so-great production quality, you can see the beauty of the album. It's by far the heaviest of his solo works, featuring his pals from SYL. Some standouts are Material, Kingdom, and the monumental Planet Rain.
12Devin Townsend Project
Ghost

So Devin returns to some of his earliest musical influences and makes a new age album. This truly shows how broad and musically flexible this man really is. Soothing, delightful, and entirely worth your time. Standouts include Feather, Blackberry, and Texada.
11Strapping Young Lad
Strapping Young Lad

Although paling in comparison from its predecessor, City, this album definitely packs quite the punch on its own. It's, as Devy puts it, definitely war music. Some standouts for me were Consequence, Relentless, and Aftermath.
10Devin Townsend Project
Ki

Very different from the rest of Dev's catalogue, Ki gives us something mellow, clean, and unique. Although loathed by the heavier fans, I can safely say I've enjoyed this record countless times (but then again, I've done that with all of Dev's releases). Standouts are Disruptr, Heaven Send, and Ki.
9Devin Townsend Project
Deconstruction

What do you get when you cross choirs, an entire orchestra, oodles of guest stars, crude humor, and a metal mastermind? Well, Deconstruction of course! Simply cannot be described. Standout tracks are Planet of the Apes, The Mighty Masturbator, and Deconstruction.
8Devin Townsend
Infinity

Devin explores new lifestyles and new genres in this one. Following up Ocean Machine, we get a taste of everything from dream pop, swing music, and good ol' fashioned prog. Some standouts are Bad Devil, War, and Life is All Dynamics.
7Strapping Young Lad
Alien

Oh boy. Devin's off his meds on this one. All over the place, insanely fast, chaotic, and brutal. Definitely not for the weak of heart. Standouts are Skeksis, Shitstorm, and Love?
6Devin Townsend Project
Addicted

Some heavy-hitting, pop infused metal that only Devin can pull off. Catchy and fun, but moments that are bone crushing. Some standouts are Addicted!, The Way Home!, and Awake!!
5Devin Townsend
Ziltoid the Omniscient

The comedic storytelling we've all grown to love from Dev about the nerdy, coffee-loving alien Ziltoid. All jokes aside, the music is very solid considering the fact it was all Devin. Seriously. Everything was Dev. Standout tracks are By Your Command, Solar Winds, and Color Your World.
4The Devin Townsend Band
Accelerated Evolution

Somehow, Dev manages to give us something heavy, melodic, catchy, and all-around amazing all in one record. The first and best of the DTB. Some standouts are Deadhead, Suicide, and Traveller.
3Devin Townsend
Terria

Atmospheric, dreamy, and totally mind-boggling and captivating at every moment, it's truly some of Devy's best work. Standout tracks were Earth Day (my first Devin song), Nobody's Here, and Tiny Tears.
2Strapping Young Lad
City

If a panic attack could be conveyed through only music, this would be the soundtrack. Pure, evil, and unrelenting industrial thrash from our boys we know and love. Standouts are All Hail the New Flesh, Detox, and AAA.
1Devin Townsend
Ocean Machine: Biomech

An absolutely astounding record in all accounts. From the heavy tracks like Regulator to the poppy ones like Life, to the epics like The Death of Music and the ambient bits like 3 A.M. There is no way for this album to go wrong. Standout tracks to me are Seventh Wave, Bastard, and The Death of Music.
