| Rec me folk classics
Since my other rec list went so well (completely died off) I figured I'd make a series. Once I complete this one I'll move onto another list with the same concept but a different genre.
Here's the rules: | 1 | | William Fitzsimmons Until When We Are Ghosts
I'll be taking 20 album recs, one per user | 2 | | Songs: Ohia Ghost Tropic
If i have an album rated by the artist you want to rec, it is ineligible | 3 | | Joshua Radin We Were Here
All recs must have under 250 votes. I don't want people reccing me stuff like Dylan, Young, or any other artists that I obviously know about but haven't got around to yet. | 4 | | Exuma Exuma
That dude with 800000 ratings
Traditional folk infused with African tribal music. At first I wasn't sure if the combination would work, but when I hit play, the powerful vocals and tribal instrumentation made for a unique experience. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, it didn't overstay it's welcome.
4.1 | 5 | | Sunhouse Crazy on the Weekend
Boney
I wasn't expecting such melancholy from a band called sunhouse. "Swing low" is an absolutely hopeless song, and my favorite off the album. Even the more upbeat songs still have an underlying sadness to them.
3.9 | 6 | | Fink Perfect Darkness
Dewinged
This dude has a great voice, and knows how to blend it with the atmosphere that the instrumentation creates. "Perfect Darkness" is the perfect blend of dark and airy, like an approaching storm cloud. I'm gonna have to check some of his other work, as I loved this
4 | 7 | | Doc Watson Doc Watson
Gagonov
This album starts off with Doc Watson telling liquor soaked stories of the everyman, but a few tracks in the tone transitions drastically. One minute Doc is singing about getting plastered, and the next he's telling the stories of murdered women. Coming into this album my expectations were reserved, but this album blew me away.
4.3 | 8 | | James Taylor James Taylor
Snoopdickrider
Taylor has a very pleasant voice, and showcases it on this album. He doesn't show off his range, but proves that he can carry a tune. Most of the songs on this blurred together, with none standing out from the rest. This was an unremarkable, but pleasant listen.
3.4 | 9 | | Jorma Kaukonen Quah
Bgillesp
Kaukonen is a great guitar player, but hes nowhere near as great of a singer. He's still a great folk singer, but his voice doesn't stand out from the swarm of similar vocalists. This album gets a bit monotonous at points, but overall a nice listen.
3.5 | 10 | | Billy Bragg Back to Basics
Tom79
I'm gonna put this bluntly, I listened to the album on YouTube, and my favorite parts were when an ad would come on. This album drones on, and on, and on. It feels like he's playing the same song over and over again. Must be a British thing.
2.1 | 11 | | Denver Broncos UK Songs One Through Eight
Kompys
Folk with minor gothic influences sounds good to me in theory. Turns out it's just as good in practise. The ghastly backing vocals are a nice touch that adds to the album's overall atmosphere. It trails off slightly towards the end, but still manages to keep its core sound intact.
3.9 | 12 | | Tigers on Trains Grandfather
Adolf
Really pleasant indie folk that is a prime example of Sowing-core. A joy to listen to.
4 | 13 | | Vashti Bunyan Just Another Diamond Day
Foxblood
An absolutely beautiful album. Something about her voice is transfixing, as it grabbed me from the start and didn't let me go until the album sadly ended.
4.3 | 14 | | Benoit Pioulard Lasted
Mexican
This is an easy album to get lost in, with its thin atmosphere and ambient droning. The vocals feel like an afterthought, but are still contributing to the album's quality.
3.7 | 15 | | Linda Perhacs Parallelograms
Friv
Yet another breathtaking album from the 70s, Perhacs possesses one of the most stunning voices I've had the pleasure of hearing. At points this album sounds decades ahead of its time.
4.4 | 16 | | Phoebe Bridgers Stranger In The Alps
Hawks m/
Folk in the same vein as Julien Baker, except with better songwriting, and less over the top vocals. I dig it.
3.9 | 17 | | Selda Selda
Ov
I've never realized how similar Turkish and Greek music is until now. This is a fun album that draws from many influences, but is hampered by its excessive run time.
3.8 | 18 | | Phil Ochs Pleasures of the Harbor
Frip
This seems like the kind of album that takes listen, after listen, until it finally clicks completely, and to be honest I'm likely not going to put that many listens into this. The album was simply good until the last two tracks where things got interesting. The title track was great, but the track that left the greatest impression on me was the crucifixion.
3.9 | 19 | | Carole King Tapestry
Manosg
You can really tell that King put her heart and soul into this record, but it still feels like something is missing that I can't quite identify.
3.6 | 20 | | Tim Hardin Tim Hardin 2
Wren
Solid, yet unremarkable folk. Hardin truly sings from the heart.
3.7 | 21 | | Ichiko Aoba 0%
Abe
Usually I'm not for albums in another language, but Ichiko's voice in enough to sway my opinion in this case.
4 | 22 | | Dave Bixby Ode To Quetzalcoatl
Frog
Very peaceful, yet somewhat unsettling, the perfect jam for a lazy day.
3.9 | 23 | | Gowns Red State
Superior jack
A ghastly and unsettling album, this is the perfect music for a midnight stroll through the city. The mix of folk, post rock, and drone works very well.
4.4 | 24 | | Right Away, Great Captain! The Church of the Good Thief
Bonus rec for my boy dbiz
Some very relaxing folk that has great lyricism.

02.07.18 | also heads up on the Ochs, it's deeply rooted in baroque pop but the guy is a through and through folk god, plus even if the music doesn't SCREAM folk, the lyricism definitely does the job | CaimanJesus

02.08.18 | It was dope. You guys have killed it so far, I've loved all 4 albums | theBoneyKing
02.08.18 | Glad you enjoyed Sunhouse! Swing Low is indeed an amazing tune, wouldn’t be my top pick but I can see an argument for pretty much any song on the album being the best. | Dewinged
02.08.18 | Sweet Fink rating man. Perfect Darkness was his peak for me. The albums before it are great too, the stuff after this one started to get a bit too much into blues and his last one is just terrible. | Kompys2000

02.08.18 | I'll check it when I finish the others | tom79
02.08.18 | In hindsight I probably should've recommended an actual album rather than a compilation since it'd be much easier to digest, but back to basics always pops into my head first as definitive Bragg. But ehh, oh well. I listened to it the other day for the first time in years and it still holds up strongly. | CaimanJesus
02.08.18 | Ye it's not bad, just not my thing | SandwichBubble
02.09.18 | "It feels like he's playing the same song over and over again."
