My 2014 Favorites
15 Scarlett Avenue
On The Mend

The local music spot on my list easily goes to "On the Mend" by my friend's band, Scarlett Avenue. My old band released an EP this year that looks like it was written by toddlers and recorded with the intent of selling out my mom's house in comparison to "On the Mend." Scarlett Avenue have been around for a few years and are super talented dudes. They gave my band our first "big" show, in support of their Creekside EP, and we played lots of shows with them until we broke up. They put this album out in the summer, and it's pretty flawless for a local act. Out of a huge amount of Pop Punk bands in the San Diego scene, I think Scarlett Avenue has the best chance of making it a career, if they wanted to. My favorite song is "Knots," and "Weeks" is tied with "Remedy" for a super close second. These dudes are incredible, and I back them hard.

XTRMST

Davey Havok and Jade Puget made a Hardcore Straightedge record. It's pretty damn cool. Uncomfortable to listen to sometimes, because the lyrics are very blunt and sometimes too far into the "I'm gonna make a statement" instead of "I'm gonna write good lyrics." That said, I dig most of the album a lot.
13Beartooth
Disgusting

This album is fuckin' great. Caleb really stepped it up, I was never too into Attack! Attack! and never kept up much on the band's newer projects. My friends kept telling me about Beartooth but I neglected to check them out for a long time, but holy shit this album is great. Some of the lyrics come off super cheesy but it's fun mosh music and "The Lines" is poppin'.
12Shellac
Dude Incredible

Everything Steve Albini does is pure gold. Except for this, which I believe was mastered on pure aluminum.
11Bongripper
Miserable

3 songs, 65 minutes, sludgy doomy metal. I can't really pinpoint a best song because each one is about 20 minutes and flow pretty well, but goddamn it's a fun listen.
10Issues
Issues

Issues was one of the first metalcore bands I ever liked. My friends were super into their debut EP "Black Diamonds" and it took me a while to like, but after seeing them at SOMA in San Diego with Silverstein (I didn't actually stay for Silverstein) and stage-diving to "Her Monologue," I adored them. This is a fantastic debut full length, "Life of a Nine" and "Late" being my favorites.
9Say Anything
Hebrews

So, Max Bemis's entire band quits and he realizes that being a sad fat jewish guy isn't a bad thing. I fucking love Say Anything, and will forever, but this record was such a grower on me. It took a long time for me to like it at all. But I really appreciate it now. Some songs are super solid ("Six Six Six", "Hebrews", "Boyd") and some songs confuse me ("Nibble Nibble") and some guest features seem really out of place ("Lost My Touch"). That said, Bemis put together a really cool album. I saw them in July on tour, and hearing the songs with guitar really made it even better for me. "Boyd" had the only mosh pit of the entire concert, including the other band's sets.
8 The World Is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid To Die
Between Bodies

This is like my favorite band. I wasn't as enchanted with this release as a lot of their earlier stuff, but I do very much welcome this collaboration and the work Chris Zizzamia (a.k.a Poet Guy/Precipice Man/The Zizz). I think the spoken word can come off a bit too strongly at points, but I appreciate what he has to say and the emotion behind it. Zizzamia did a write-up of the stories behind his pieces and that gave me a new appreciation for the songs, and David Bello is really showing exactly what he can do as a songwriter for TWIABP. The song "Autotonsorialist" gives me chills, and my screen name for most things is @brandonontheprecipice
7Beck
Morning Phase

The follow up to Sea Change (although there have been albums in between), Beck mellows out and releases more songwriter-y tunes than stuff on say, Guero, Modern Guilt, or any more recent releases. I often neglect listening to this album but when I come back to it, it feels right.
6 Tiger's Jaw
Charmer

The last album recorded with the full Tiger's Jaw lineup, and 3/5 of the band left prior to it's release. I never got too heavily into Tiger's Jaw before this album, but this album is really solid. "Slow Come On" and "Frame You" are my favorites on the album, and I really wish "Hum" had a second chorus. The guitar tones on this album are some of my favorites ever, as well. (Listen to Hum to understand)
5 Dads
I'll Be The Tornado

More akin to EP "Pretty Good." than their first full length "American Radass," this is where I really hoped Dads would go. The album is full of emotional lyrics and catchy tunes, while songs like "Chewing Ghosts" bring back the twinkly emo math rock of previous Dads releases.
4 You Blew It!
Keep Doing What You're Doing

I bought this album in the spring, a little while after it had come out, and listened to it a few times. I thought it was cool, but nothing mind blowing. Then in July, I saw them (on tour with Say Anything, The Front Bottoms, and The So So Glos) and realized how talented they were. I listened back to the album, and it's been a regular on my playlists ever since. My favorite song on it is "Regional Dialect," followed by "Award of the Year Award" and "Match & Tinder." Definitely worth a listen. Put these guys through college.
3Julia Brown
An Abundance of Strawberries

I don't think this album was supposed to be released. That said, when Sam offered to email it to fans, I jumped on that. I listen to this so much. Sam Ray is one of my favorite musicians and songwriters, and this album is gorgeous.
2Code Orange
I Am King

This album is really god damn heavy. At times, it seems like it's one long breakdown. But I think it stays interesting. The band has three different vocalists and each style contributes to a unique sound. "Dreams of Inertia" is the fire.
1Rozwell Kid
Too Shabby

I got into this band right when their second album, Unmacho, came out. It was pretty much my soundtrack for senior year of High School. "Oh wow, I really fucked up now." "If I had one hundred bucks, I'd buy myself one fuck to give." (I didn't have a good senior year.) I waited for this album pretty eagerly, and wasn't disappointed. This album is flawless. From the catchy hooks of singles "Sick Jackets" and "Kangaroo Pocket" to the emotional (yet still silly) lyrics of "Halloween 3.5" and "Birthday Sombrero," I cannot get over this album. It's so fun, and so well executed.
