Uni's 2017 Tourney

I've fallen a bit behind on my 2017 listenings (as opposed to my 2016 experience) and there hasn't been an album I would actually love front-to-back this year, so you have the power to change that. Gimme dem 2k17 shit, yo.
1Forest Swords
Compassion

bgillesp
Fairly simple, no-nonsense, straightforward electronic album of pleasant tunes. It may not exactly have a staying value, but it is a worthwhile experience nontheless.
3.51
2Spirit Adrift
Curse of Conception

bgillesp
Strangely enough, in spite of how much I loved their Behind: Beyond EP, this didn't wow me as much. It lost some of that atmospheric charm and became just a slight bit flatter. Nevertheless, it is still a damn kick-ass record.
3.99
3Monte Luna
Monte Luna

bgillesp
Yeah, I'm somewhere in the middle with this one. On one hand, the trippiness and the insane instrumentation is just damn impressive. On the other hand, it's just so damn long and exhausting to listen to...
3.61
4The Necromancers
Servants of the Salem Girl

bgillesp
This gives me such a dad-metal boner! This is the kind of thing kids think their Metal obsessed uncles listen to. And y'know what? Those kids can go fuck themselves, this rocks hard.
4.11
5yMusic
First

bgillesp
From the very first moment as the string section crashes down on you I knew I was going to love this. Good lord, this is some damn fantastic neo-classical music with a touch of obscure. I feel like listening to a soundtrack to some mildly psychedelic, extremely dramatic and off-the-cuff emotionally scarring film. It's gorgeous to say the least.
4.43

(P.S.: Son Lux can do no wrong)
6Exquirla
Para Quienes Aún Viven

bgillesp
This requires more listens, so far my feelings are positive, but I'll need more time on this one.
N/A
UPDATE: Yeah, this definitely opens up its full charm on repeated listens. At first I thought it was just another one of those overlong, tiring Post-whatever experiences with some actually intriguing shamanistic nods and influences. But as the time went on, I realised it was growing on me more and more. It does get somewhat tiring eventually, but the explosive, engulfing, magnetic and crushing moments of unusual vocal and instrumental interplay did all the tricks they needed to, in order to win me over. It's a doozie.
4.13
7Fen
Winter

bgillesp
What are you doing?! You damn well all know I am a softie for epic atmospheric Black Metal. Of course I enjoyed the hell out of this. But the vocals just kept barricading my way towards lovning it. So your victory here isn't all that big.
4.03
8Desperate Journalist
Grow Up

TwigTW
Desperate Journalist are desperate to make some of that washed-out Post-Punk-ish revivalism-esque blandness. Some decent tune here and there, mostly fine vocals and I suppose they do what they can with the Lo-Fi, over-accessible, linear, straightforward and dreaded out style they chose. But that doesn't change the fact that it is what it is, a boring ol' Lo-Fi, over-accessible, linear, straightforward and dreaded out style. You'll have to do more than that to impress me.
2.60
9Gold
Optimist

hansoloshotfirst
This ain't your typical cocky Hard Rock for cocks. This that atmospheric, patient and lucid Hard Rock for the artsy mustache-rockin' fams. This that creative shit, bruv. This that good shite, bruv.
3.88
10Grift
Arvet

hansoloshotfirst
I appreciate the simplicity and the more or less traditional approach to At.BM, but there is just something non-descript about this album. It's just kind of drab with subpar production and instrumentation and even more subpar vocals.
3.15
11Akercocke
Renaissance in Extremis

bgillesp
Man, I am not a fan of this guy's growls. Then again, I am not a fan of growls in general so... The instrumentation, production and the clean vocals were all great and made it worth it, but the growls are just laughable and out of place.
3.64
12Falls of Rauros
Vigilance Perennial

BlackwaterPork
Oh yes, baby. This is my kind of stuff. I love metal in general, but this kind of skeletal, folksy Black Metal is my bread and butter. Rapid and brutal, but also with a fair amount of soul and beauty to it. That's the stuff.
4.31
13Ryuichi Sakamoto
Async

Frippertronics
An album of strange peace. It draws you in with a firm, but soft grip and it doesn't let you go from its naturally calming embrace. I really don't know what to say. It's beautifully freeing. I now understand why you wanted everyone to listen to it so badly, Fripp.
4.44
14Ariel Pink
Dedicated to Bobby Jameson

Frippertronics
A fairly fine album that doesn't alwys grip, but is charming overall with that pretty distorted almost-DIY-sound-a-like feel to it.
3.81
15The Horrors
V

Frivolous
Well, the band definitely feel confident about their transition into this sort of Industrial Electropunk direction they took and they flow freely in the streams of it. It's quite obvious that this transition was thought through and isn't just some spontaneous trend-blending many other bands do. My only real gripe with it is that its songwriting is more often than not a tad underwhelming and not all that memorable. Overall, it's a fine album, but not the most striking.
3.69
16Kiko Dinucci
Cortes Curtos

Frivolous
The strangest of the accessible and the most fun of the weird records this year. Kiko Dinucci delivers some truly bind-bending, perspective-twisting and perception-shifting obscurity that is as hard to swallow as it is fun to attempt to do so.
4.05
17Landlady
The World Is A Loud Place

Frivolous
This album's lightheartedness and inherently positive attitude just makes my day. It is not only catchy and fun, it is also instrumentally rich and musically intriguing. I was thinkingg for quite some time, whether or not this is one of those fun-for-one-time records worth a 4.0 (7/10) or an actually really great record worth a full 4.5 (8/10). But I think my final decision is not baseless, for I do have a crazy tendency to return to this echoic wonderland.
4.45
18Kirin J. Callinan
Bravado

Frivolous
Yeah... no, thank you. but the t/t was nice
2.12
19Alex Cameron
Forced Witness

Frivolous
This album is just pretty. It's as relaxing an instrument-led music as you get. Its inherent carefree attitude and lovesick themes are all gleeful and full of life, even though they are presented with a certain level of nonchalancy. It's a great record, even if a tad too simplistic.
3.82
20Kevin Morby
City Music

Frivolous
This was surprisingly pleasant. It had that slightly silly and cheeky charm to it, but ultimately feels incredibly soulful and sweet. Yeah, I don't have a lot more to say, it's just really nice.
3.84
21Motorpsycho
The Tower

BlazinBlitzer
It's a hell of a ride. A tiring, dizzying and long, but a ride nonetheless.
3.87
22Purefilth
Unhuman Forms Prevail

nocuffin
About the most brutal, insane and tiring thing I've heard all year. My ears hurt.

Demo

nocuffin
Let me just put it this way: the intro to this EP is extremely promising, it is mysterious, dark and has a nice tune to it, but is layered on top of some obscure distortion. That's a really cool musical concept and one that naturally intrigued me... then the rest of the album kicked in.... yeah.
Intro rating: 3.50
All together: 1.34
25Emmure
Look at Yourself

nocuffin
How do you do this, nocuffin? How come the only (Chino Amobi doesn't count) remotely bearable album on your monster rec list is a godfucking Emmure dogshit album? This is atrocious, alright, but at least it has some sort of... structure...

nocuffin
This album feels like a near-magical odyssey. Its style, its atmosphere and the songwriting all create some kind of crazy, but systematically orderly world. It's like Alice in Beaurocratically Structured Wonderland. Only thing, it does overstay its welcome a bit, but the striking and overwhelming nature of it all makes it worth it.

nocuffin
I don't know what to think about this. I am not an expert on this sort of music. I adon not know how to interpret this sort of music. I don't know what to think of this. I mean, I actually managed to like it. It's not music per se, but it has a certain solitary, foggy and chilling atmosphere to it that really got under my skin. Yeah... I don't know.... It's good, I guess...

Swimming Salt 游泳的盐

nocuffin
I don't know, where you can possibly find this album in full, but from teh 13-minutes long preview I've heard I can say that unless the full album is radically different, I will most definitely hate it. However, unlike most other crap sach somehow likes, this at least isn't all noise, so there's that.

35Enbilulugugal
Offerings to Curlyton

nocuffin
The picture on the cover is not just some random thematic image, it is actually the scientifically proven aftermath of listening to this album. I look like that now. I don't think I've experienced a more pointless album this year.

Death Is Salvation

nocuffin
I'll tell you what, I've had more pleasant experiences in my life. This album is inherently unlikeable and that's its whole charm. It is awful from on all fronts, but then again, that's what it aims for.
3.06
38Bereft (USA-WI)
Lands

hesperus
This is crushing and heavy as fuck, but at the same time really forgettable. The growling vocals also don't do it for me. On the other hand, the fast and monstrous parts and the shrieking vocals, they are actually good.
3.23
39Alter
Pendulum

hesperus
Yeah, right, okay... This is ridiculously boring. I had a difficulty going through this on first sit, second sit, I doubt there will ever be a third, fourth I guarantee will never come.. It's just so... uneventful... at all. I'm really baffled by how little is going on.
2.32
40Pile
A Hairshirt of Purpose

Frivolous
Distorted, pissed and intriguingly cynical in a lot of ways. There is enough interesting material for me to call it a decent album, but there is also a lot, lot, lot of water.
3.40
41Guerilla Toss
GT Ultra

Frivolous
Oce good thing I can tell you about this is that it is indeed unusual. The vocals are gratinga and obnoxious, but not something I've heard like a million times. Then again, it's not something I want to hear more than once.
3.16
42Meat Wave
The Incessant

Frivolous
You found a Post-Punk album I haven't heard, kudos. I appreciate the striking instrumentation and the shredding emotional vocals, but the album suffers from a lacking songwriting and samey music. It's fine, but nothing beyond special.
3.45
43Richard Dawson
Peasant

Frivolous
Boy, this is a tough one. I really want to give this something around a 1.5, but I realise that this ridiculous fucking annoyance the album delivered at every single fucking track was indeed intentional. I don't know if that makes it better or worse. Some charm is there... but it is incredibly hard to sit through. I will not give it any rating yet, cause I will try my best to give it a second listen and not fucking vomit. Ugh.
2.54
44Samsara Blues Experiment
One with the Universe

Frivolous
Stoner Psych! You got me Stoner Psych. It is as rapid, dizzying (in a good way) and tiring as a good Stoner Psych album should be. But it also carries the tradition of the genre, by which I mean that this, just like most other such albums, is way too long for its own good. It is good indeed, but it goes on for- seemingly- ever.
3.72
45Dutch Uncles
Big Balloon

Frivolous
Well, I can tell you for sure that it is pleasant. I just really can't get into it. It sounds too one-dimensional, samey and utterly forgettable for me.
2.43
46Cherry Glazerr
Apocalipstick

Dewinged
From seeing the cover I knew I was not going to like it, but I was acually pleasantly surprised that this is only half that washed out, dreadful, glossy, pomade of a drab Dream Pop Rock record. It actually does have its cool instrumetnal moments... not enough to make it interesting to listen to, though.
2.69
47Toothless
The Pace of the Passing

Dewinged
Don't know what you were so afraid of, Dewinged. This is not half as bad as it would have seemed. Sure, it is quite boring and uninspired, but it is not offensively bad. You're not royally fucked. You just have a mildly mediocre finish.
2.77
48A/T/O/S
Outboxed

Dewinged
Certainly a pleasant experience, but just like the vast majority of Trip-Hop I've ever heard, it just did absolutely nothing to me. I kept giving it another chance, but it just didn't stick with me, musically, compositionally or emotionally. It's just a big clump of nothing. Sorry.
3.19
49Kairon IRSE!
Ruination

Dewinged
Surprise, surprise, Dewinged brought it again with an incredibly off-the-hook album full of spacy production and trippy instrumentation. I'm not blown away or anything, the songwriting could still improve a tad. But it is still a good-timer.
4.20
50Louise Burns
Young Mopes

Dewinged
Quite a sweet little easy-to-listen-to album, but also a tad forgettable one. It's unfortunate, because there are some genuinely sweet tunes on here. It's just so one-time-only and expendable.
3.08
51Shannon Wright
Division

Dewinged
This sounds like it has all the potential to be engulfing, enthralling, engrossing and all the other adjectives starting with en- that mean something good. But I just felt let down a lot of the times by the lackluster execution. The instrumental arrangement needs to pop a little better, Shannon's vocals do not carry anything and the production needs to get either less fuzzy or fuzz it out to the max. As of right now, this seems to be a beta-stage concept for an overwhelming artsy album that could be great, but falls apart. It's a disappointment, really.
2.96
52Persefone
Aathma

Dewinged
I really want to like this, I really do, but it is just so "epic-over-substance". It's forgettable at best and even when it's not, it is just way too bloated and silly with how seriously it takes itself. The growls are also not exactly the best. I am not a fan, but I tried to be.
2.66
53Colour Haze
In Her Garden

Dewinged
This was quite intriguing at the very least, the subdued instrumentation and the trippy riffs were enticing, but the songwriting felt unexciting, tedious and way too long. Also the vocals, while occasional, did annoy me.
3.22
54Junius
Eternal Rituals For The Accretion of Light

Dewinged
This thing is beastly. There is a near-demonic presence on this record. It feels like a journey through the underworld. But not the christian kind, the cool Hades kind. And the melodies and their intensity reaches from stunning to corny and silly, but still fun.
3.77
55Parlor Walls
Opposites

Dewinged
This just isn't interesting... like at all.. I think the problem is in me.
2.56
56Clark
Death Peak

Dewinged
It's almost amazing how little engaging material is on here. I can hear each song trying to get that wreched momentum, proper kick or at least anything remotely resembling interesting music, but it is just so ridiculously underwhelming directionless and never leading to anything on each and every goddamn song.
1.89
57Nodachi
Beyond Death Beyond Reason

Dewinged
Dewinged's best rec is also the shortest one. It's a quick EP, but with some ridiculously beautiful tunes and shifting, varieted instrumental and stylistic patterns. It bends and turns and twists and is fucking awesome. You done good, Dew.
4.36
58Tigerwine
Die With Your Tongue Out

Dewinged
Well, I do like the heaviness and the vocals quite a bit, but I really can't get over the fact that the songs just sound the same. There is hardly any interesting, distinctive sound to any of them and the album ends up feeling like a drag. Still, it's not an absolute disaster.
3.25
59Trans Am
California Hotel

Dewinged
You know how they say that something has 'too much water'? Well, here it sounds like there was a literal water tank between the band playing the instruments and teh recording mechanisms. Why is this so muffled? Ugh.
2.44

Trance of Death

Evokaphile
You've hit gold, mate. This is exactly the kind of hellish, nightmares-inducing beastly metal I like to dig my teeth into. The undeniable atmosphere of menace and the incredibly intricate instrumental work just keep you gripped and hooked all the way through. It's an immaculate piece and I love it. Thank you!
4.34
62Sneaks
It's a Myth

butcherbabe
Yeah, I can't really understand why does this have a Post-Punk tag, cause there is maybe only some Post-Punk-like bass on one or two tracks, but otherwise it's a complete Art-Poppy thing. But the blandest, most boring and almost unbearably tiringly obnoxiously monotone. The beats you can find on a synthesiser for kids with about the vocal abilities of one such kid.
1.21
63Ensnared
Dysangelium

bgillesp
This is how I like my Death Metal. It's brutal, hellish, dismal and ruthless. My only gripe is that it is kind of messy and a lot of the times, if the volume is a notch too high, the music becomes basically unintelligible, but that's hardly an album-ruiner.
3.96
64Hubris
Apocryphal Gravity

teamster
I like the lot of it, from the cosmic atmosphere to the aerial instrumentation, but this album is just really patience testing. It functions on building atmosphere and momentum that never does deliver. Song after song I was hoping to at least get a memorable crescendo, as you do, but it never really comes. This is just all throughout underwhelming. Sorry.
2.76
65Sean Price
Imperius Rex

DikkoZinner
On one hand, this might as well be one of the best throwbacks to the 90s. On the other, the album doesn't have as big a staying power as it builds up to have. The songs crush, rattle and engulf. They are powerful and I will definitely jam them again... but not as a full album, I don't think.

The Spark

ZombieToyDuck
Enter Shikari were never a band I'd be particularly fond of, but I will admit that there was something to their music that could have been potentially appealing if done right. The Spark is nearing to that. It's an unexpectedly jolly and upbeat album, considering their previous stuff. Often too forgettable and silly, but fun while it lasts.
3.49
69The Black Dahlia Murder
Nightbringers

ZombieToyDuck
I appreciate the harshness and the craziness of it all, but this album just had too little sound variety or intriguing enough content to keep me hooked. In all honesty, one listen was enough, second was a tough one.
3.29
70McCafferty
Thanks. Sorry. Sure.

ZombieToyDuck
Well, it was about time I get back on that McCafferty bandwagon. And seeing how much I love this kind of upbeat, snarky, down-to-earth Pop-Punk-induced Emo, this should have been right up my alley. And yes it was. It's a brilliantly played, fun as fuck little EP with some bittersweet lyrics and headsmashing songwriting. Yay for them. Hope it doesn't turn out that they too fuck kids or something. You did good tho, DNS.
4.38
71Ho99o9
United States Of Horror

ZombieToyDuck
Death Grips, but listenable all throughout. Holy shit, how I loved this blend of harsh Hip-Hop, Punk, Industrial and all sorts of other Noise-inspired stuff. This is just dissonance at its catchiest and most invigorating.
4.10
72J.I.D
The Never Story

ZombieToyDuck
J.I.D.'s delivery is quite decent and the production is mostly solid too, but my ajor gripe with the album is that it doesn't have anything much to it, besides the technical side of it all. It just exists for the sake of existing and sounding fairly okay, but I really can't hear anything outstandingly memorable on here.
3.36
73Novo Amor
Bathing Beach

neekafat
A sweet little EP, but not exactly one that I'd say has anything above unusual to it. I don't see myself returning to either this or anything of Novo Amor's catalogue. The overly sterilised sugary tenderness just kind of felt obnoxious at times.
3.01
74Fazerdaze
Morningside

budgie
This is surely nice, but it did not grip me almost at all. It's extremely drab and forgettable. The atmosphere put me to sleep half of the time and the songwriting itself was completely boring. At least it sounds pleasant, so I guess it could have been worse.

budgie
Extremely lightweight and ridiculously tedious little Shoegaze Pop. It's like listening to the repetative jingles from low budget sitcoms, when something mildly pleasant happens or it's a christmas special or something. It's utterly uninspired and mindnumbingly boring.

bgillesp
This has some gut, this has some style. However, be it for the often teeny-tiny bit underwhelming production or the dragging songwriting, I just couldn't get into it all that much. It's a fine album, but it isn't particularly outstanding.
3.70
79Dvanov
For Gathering Dust

bgillesp
Some nice instrumentation, some decent songwriting, some pretty vocals, some intriguing lyrics. It's an album that pretty much has a chunk of anything good enough to make it digestable and often times pleasant. I do admit that at times when it gets grandiose I love it, but it's inconsistent in that way.

This! This I loved. I loved the intricate instrumental palette. I loved the vocal range. I loved the rich production textures and how every instrument pops, in spite of there being an onslaught of them. I loved how ridiculously fun the songwriting on here was. I loved how it never became boring and how overall consistent and absolutely perfectly cohesive the flow of the record was. I loved it. I'm sorry, bgillesp, but this trashy Country-esque Folk-Rock or whatever it is just had absolutely no effect on me. I'd be lighter on it had the songwriting actually been any striking or interesting, but it is rather forgettable. Really sorry.

There is some level of calm and sexy nonchalance to this album. Unfortunately, it often jsut drops into pure apathy. And the apathy and indifference is mutual. Still, some truly striking moments here and there are keeping the record afloat.

bgillesp
Another bgillesp hit! I was a tad scared of going into this album, the first track did have me worried. The cheesy Hard Rock-ish Indie is not necessarily my forte. But my frown turned upside down immediately as I realised just how fun and catchy a song it was and I had it on replay several times before even considering going further into the record. The greatness of the album is mostly thanks to the infinitely great songwriting that just forces its way under your skin with its natural radness... aaaaaand I'Ll save these words for my review, thank you very much.

This is your standard affair. It's as atmospheric as these things go and as overwhelming as one could ever wish. It's a damn solid album all throughout.

While I absolutely admire the oddball and mind-bending instrumentation, I have to say that this skit-like, quick fire style of songwriting thatmess up the flow and keep you from enjoying the songs fully, as well as the nasally vocals, just kept me from liking it.

I am not a fan of this kind of pop music. I. Am. Not. A. Fan.

Much like the lot of Prog Metal albums, this too is an uncontrollable mess and an examplary precedent of "disorganisation".

I really don't know how to describe this. It is beyond intriguing and I had a fair share of fun with it, but it is just so strange that I can't quite hold a tight grip on it. It is a great trippy music, definitely, but it is also really non-descript.

A damn badass Punk throwback. It has all the punch and personality a good Punk record needs, but sadly doesn't have as big a staying value as one would wish.

bgil warned me that I'll either love this or hate it. And here's your answer. I hate it. Completely. Unquestionably. It's atrocious. Please, no more of this.

This little fuck got a name change, so it disappeared from all the lists it was featured on, including this one, which messed up the numbering, so let's just say I wasn't too crazy about it and here's the rating:
