Deftones ranked (w/ Ohms)

After sitting with Ohms for a while, this is where I'm at. Tell me where I'm wrong.

Adrenaline

I love the simplicity, and some of Steph's most creative riffage is here. But ultimately it's just prepubescent AtF. There are much worse things to be.

Favorite tracks: Minus Blindfold, 7 Words, Birthmark

Gore

Like if you programmed a really smart AI to write a Deftones record. Solid songs beaten down by drowsy, off-putting production and an occasional lack of palpable enthusiasm. I'm glad it exists though. No other album of theirs has this aesthetic, for better or for worse.

Hearts/Wires, (L)MIRL, Rubicon

Ohms

More sonically clean, more focused, and all around more 'Deftones-y' than Gore, no doubt. But a few of these songs have yet to resonate with me like they should if I'm gonna fawn like everyone else. I welcome that to change.

Ceremony, Error, Urantia

White Pony

Maybe this placement is criminal. I understand why this album is put on a pedestal. It makes some huge leaps in their sound without losing the raw energy of Around the Fur. But it also doesn't provide much that isn't done better on that record or on some later record.

Around the Fur

This one has an atmosphere like nothing else. Sinister and sexual, primal and poetic. You've heard it a thousand times, I don't think I need to say more.

Mascara, Be Quiet and Drive, Dai the Flu

Brutal and unrelenting and somber and gorgeous and the perfect culmination of everything they'd be working toward since '95.

Hexagram, Needles and Pins, Battle-axe

Koi No Yokan

Their most well-rounded and all-encompassing work. Also my favorite aesthetically. From the cover art to the musical textures, everything about it feels ethereal and otherworldly. Also might be the best place for beginners to start.

Tempest, Gauze, Goon Squad

Diamond Eyes

41 minutes of crushing beauty and refined fury. The production choices are sleek and the riffage is killer. I get reeeeal emotional listening to some of these tunes. Sometimes that means tears, sometimes that means wanting to punch a hole through the wall.

Beauty School, Sextape, 976-EVIL

Saturday Night Wrist

It's hard to explain why this stands above everything else in my eyes. The flow isn't very cohesive, and the band certainly didn't enjoy making it. But maybe the scarred, fragmented nature of it all is what makes SNW so perfect. Even 'Pink Cellphone' has its place for me. A cosmic work of art. RIP Chi.

Hole in the Earth, Cherry Waves, Konami Code, all of them really
