| Deftones ranked (w/ Ohms)
After sitting with Ohms for a while, this is where I'm at. Tell me where I'm wrong. | 9 | | Deftones Adrenaline
I love the simplicity, and some of Steph's most creative riffage is here. But ultimately it's just prepubescent AtF. There are much worse things to be.
Favorite tracks: Minus Blindfold, 7 Words, Birthmark | 8 | | Deftones Gore
Like if you programmed a really smart AI to write a Deftones record. Solid songs beaten down by drowsy, off-putting production and an occasional lack of palpable enthusiasm. I'm glad it exists though. No other album of theirs has this aesthetic, for better or for worse.
Hearts/Wires, (L)MIRL, Rubicon | 7 | | Deftones Ohms
More sonically clean, more focused, and all around more 'Deftones-y' than Gore, no doubt. But a few of these songs have yet to resonate with me like they should if I'm gonna fawn like everyone else. I welcome that to change.
Ceremony, Error, Urantia | 6 | | Deftones White Pony
Maybe this placement is criminal. I understand why this album is put on a pedestal. It makes some huge leaps in their sound without losing the raw energy of Around the Fur. But it also doesn't provide much that isn't done better on that record or on some later record.
Digital Bath, Elite, Change | 5 | | Deftones Around the Fur
This one has an atmosphere like nothing else. Sinister and sexual, primal and poetic. You've heard it a thousand times, I don't think I need to say more.
Mascara, Be Quiet and Drive, Dai the Flu | 4 | | Deftones Deftones
Brutal and unrelenting and somber and gorgeous and the perfect culmination of everything they'd be working toward since '95.
Hexagram, Needles and Pins, Battle-axe | 3 | | Deftones Koi No Yokan
Their most well-rounded and all-encompassing work. Also my favorite aesthetically. From the cover art to the musical textures, everything about it feels ethereal and otherworldly. Also might be the best place for beginners to start.
Tempest, Gauze, Goon Squad | 2 | | Deftones Diamond Eyes
41 minutes of crushing beauty and refined fury. The production choices are sleek and the riffage is killer. I get reeeeal emotional listening to some of these tunes. Sometimes that means tears, sometimes that means wanting to punch a hole through the wall.
Beauty School, Sextape, 976-EVIL | 1 | | Deftones Saturday Night Wrist
It's hard to explain why this stands above everything else in my eyes. The flow isn't very cohesive, and the band certainly didn't enjoy making it. But maybe the scarred, fragmented nature of it all is what makes SNW so perfect. Even 'Pink Cellphone' has its place for me. A cosmic work of art. RIP Chi.
Hole in the Earth, Cherry Waves, Konami Code, all of them really | |

10.17.20 | For the record, I think they're all somewhere between 'very good' and 'masterpiece' | MO
10.17.20 | All about kny | deathschool
10.17.20 | 1 is 1, but idk about the rest of this. | porcupinetheater

10.17.20 | Ppl are always coming up to me and saying "ExtinguishingTheSun, nobody loves Deftones more than you, pal. You're very handsome and cool btw" | rockarollacola
10.17.20 | I still can't get over how their artwork looks like rejected Muse album covers. | Gyromania
10.17.20 | Sextape and digital bath are easily their 2 most overrated songs.
Rly baffling Ohms picks. Def 3 of the weakest tracks on the album | bananatossing
10.17.20 | I'd put ATF higher, and Koi No Yokan lower, but it is a solid list and all I care for, really, is that SNW is right where it belongs. | Flashmobba
10.17.20 | daaaang never thought I'd find someone else who put snw and kny in their top 3 with WP near the bottom, you sir are a g | ExtinguishingTheSun

Yeah yeah I know the middle stretch is more popular but those songs don't do much for me...everyone's got their own Deftones I guess | PurpleDino
10.17.20 | Agreed with your picks from Ohms, also great to see Dai the Flu get some love, easily one of my top picks from AtF | BlazinBlitzer
