Trifolium
03.07.21 | Oooooh, two more that I don't know! I think I checked Mingus before, and I know Talk Talk, but these two are new for me. Excited! |
LeddSledd
03.07.21 | hell yes, more jazz |
Demon of the Fall
03.07.21 | I’m in full support of the movement, just making this known.
P.S. Hi! |
Pangea
03.07.21 | Hi demon! it's a very fun movement indeed |
porcupinetheater
03.07.21 | Been meaning to get into earlier Mingus and also holy shit Mark Hollis did a jazz inspired piece? Fucking stoked for these! |
Demon of the Fall
03.07.21 | I like Mingus, not heard this one though. Hmm, interesting. |
dedex
03.08.21 | woo woo j/
Already love the Mark Hollis one, but I'm excited to jump on some early Mingus! |
rellik009
03.08.21 | j-j-j-j-j-j/
also the mingus one slaps me sideways |
Pheromone
03.08.21 | demon be part of the movement! 2021 is the year of jazz, it even has the same amount of characters!

dedex
03.08.21 | I enjoyed the Mingus one, but damn The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady remains his madafakin pinnacle |
Pangea
03.08.21 | yeah he has done better, but the clown is hos first excellent album for me.
RE your sound-off: the bookends are certainly the showstoppers but i enjoy the middle tracks a lot as well |
Trifolium
03.08.21 | Checking that 🤡 now! |
bgillesp
03.09.21 | I haven’t listened to The Clown in a while, so I will definitely listen again, but I remember it being a lesser one of his works for me. Hopefully I find something I missed. Never even heard of Mark Hollis so that one will be fun |
bgillesp
03.09.21 | Also @dedex, did you just start using “j/“ as the new “m/“? If so I like it |
dedex
03.09.21 | I'm pretty sure I was not the one starting this trend, but yeah now we use "j/" as the new "m/" |
rellik009
03.09.21 | who knows who invented the j/
a worthy task for our dedextive |
Dewinged
03.09.21 | Signed up! For some dark doom jazz ;) |
Trifolium
03.09.21 | Yes the j/ thing makes me so happy omg it's perfect. |

rellik009
03.09.21 | i got outclassed

dedex
03.09.21 | according to my dedextive talents, yes j/ |
Demon of the Fall
03.09.21 | j/ displeases me from an aesthetics standpoint. I’ll have to condition myself. Cool though! |
rellik009
03.09.21 | that's pretty j/
j/ on folks! |
porcupinetheater
03.09.21 | j/ all day you trailblazing madman |

03.09.21 | j/ the revolution will not be televised |
bgillesp
03.09.21 | Relistening to The Clown now. Haitian Fight Song is so great j/! |
Pangea
03.10.21 | Haitian Fight Song is amazing for sure |
dedex
03.10.21 | hell yah
will prob listen to Hollis' record today. Last time I heard it was right after he died 😞 |
Pangea
03.10.21 | I checked it for the first time right after he died. Immediately became one of my favourite albums ever |
porcupinetheater
03.10.21 | Listened to the Clown once through but in a finals manic state and it is not absorbed yet
I do not know if the title track is hysterically depressing or depressingly hysterical |
Pangea
03.10.21 | i think i would go for hysterically depressing |
dedex
03.10.21 | [2] |
Trifolium
03.10.21 | Going to pick up where I left The Clown, around 15 minutes in. ~I enjoyed what I heard up to that point! Hope I have the time to finish these today! |
bgillesp
03.10.21 | T/t is my least favorite on The Clown. I feel like the whole album is one I need to be in the right frame of mind to properly appreciate, but I never have been in the few times I’ve listened to it. |
bgillesp
03.10.21 | I still really like it, but I feel like there is more to it that I’m not getting because it always just sits wrong in my gut for some reason |
porcupinetheater
03.10.21 | Yeah, can definitely see The Clown clashing with the context the rest of the record sets up for it, but as a standalone piece of musical narrative thought it was potent as Hell |
Trifolium
03.11.21 | The Clown is nice! I really love his bass playing, man! |
dedex
03.11.21 | the Mark Hollis is as soothing as I remember |
Pangea
03.11.21 | Mingus' bass playing is fantastic for sure, especially in the first track here. so good
never considerd the mark hollis album soothing personally but i could see it |
Trifolium
03.11.21 | I like how disjointed The Clown is (eeeeeek, how's that for nightmare fuel!). One moment it's very old school, 50s jazz, the other it kind of explodes in your face.
Planning to check the Hollis one later today too. I've never really liked the Talk Talk stuff too much, especially the vox, so I'm kind of hesitant towards it. |
Pangea
03.11.21 | it is very unsettling for sure!
i'm not super huge on his voice in talk talk as well, but i do find that the fragility of his voice works really well on his solo album. hopefully you will feel the same! |
Trifolium
03.11.21 | It is indeed as I feared, Hollis just isn't my man it seems. Still really like the instrumentation for the most part though! Makes it super hard to rate aah!
Thanks for two records I would not have otherwise checked Pangea! Despite them not totally being my thing I really still enjoyed it because I wouldn't ever have made the effort to give them a chance. Best track of the lot: the opener of The Clown! Loved that one! |
porcupinetheater
03.14.21 | Woah, the Mark Hollis record is absolutely not surprisingly v gorgeous. Cool hearing the reframed context of a lot of the Talk Talk work.
Still trying to sort out feelings on the Clown, a week playing with some very nuanced and ambiguous tones. Sweet calls, Pange j/ |
porcupinetheater
03.14.21 | Westward Bound leaves me so powerfully melancholy, and then the playful, even a little goofy horns start off The Daily Planet right after, and the very subtle dissonance of the effect is a little bit exciting tbh |
Pangea
03.14.21 | Oh yes somewhat of a weird transition but it works really well. The Daily Planet in general is stunning.
And yeah i feel like his solo is still very much in spirit of the latter talk talk albums, but in a more jazzy chamber setting rather than a rock one. His use of using space in his song compositions is so good. |
bgillesp
03.15.21 | I liked the Hollis album. Pretty minimal on the jazz and just overall but I liked Talk Talk so it was still nice for me |
Pangea
03.15.21 | yeah i used the term 'jazz' very loosely for 2, but the influence is there and i love the album so. i'm glad you liked it! |
