Atm. Black Metal 2016

Stuff I've dug up this year that's atmospheric/folk black metal and stuff that might not technically be either but still belongs in the same conversation. Recs welcome.

Le Culte du Crane

Aggressive black metal with huge variety of drumming and very up-front vocals. Some real venom coming out of this dynamic album that falls somewhere between Windir and Skeletonwitch. 3.6

Almost entirely ambient release with some gorgeous melodies. Very minimalistic and effective for a mood-setter. You might forget it's on and then wonder why your head's in such a calm place when it ends. 3.8

An hour of cold, enveloping darkness alternating between impenetrable walls of sound and borderline doom passages. The second half is entirely ambient, with horror soundscapes and creeping guitar swells. Paysage fans rejoice. 4.1

A gorgeous album that cements Saor's place as a folk/ethnic metal visionary. "Hearth" might be the best song of 2016. 4.5+

Grim, depressive folk/black with some great acoustic work. Might bump this since it feels like a grower. 3.7
30Trvth
Grief and Justice

Trvth's minimalist black metal template sets a desolate mood on Grief and Justice, his latest collection of tales of longing and woe. There's a drone element to much of the album, with winding compositions like "Fears" and "In Despair" leaning on Smith's raspy but intelligible vocals to carry them along. The imagery throughout is harrowing and integral to the experience; on album highlight "My Feelings," there's a poetic fervor in Smith's opening delivery of "Let the day perish on which I was born." Fans of Thou and Agalloch (Trvth lies somewhere in the ashen plans between black and doom metal) ought to find a
worthwhile journey in Grief and Justice. 3.7

Paysage worship with stellar production and just enough dynamic range. 4.0

Saved one of the best for last apparently. Beautifully written and produced folk metal a la Mantle-era Agalloch. I bought two cassettes of this within five minutes of stumbling across it. 4.1
