| CHECK OUT MY BAND'S DEMO/HATTIESBURG MS ROCK
My blackened post punk/hardcore band softly released a demo back in March. It would be cool if any of you sput folks gave it a listen and rated it after. https://eyesoreyouth.bandcamp.com/album/politicos-muertos
I moved to Hattiesburg MS from Oxford MS a year ago, specifically because the local punk rock scene inspired me and made me want to be here doing what I’m doing. I wanted to give you guys a bit of a showcase around my cool local music scene. I never knew there was anything like this in MS before I saw it with my own eyes. This burgeoning outsider music scene with about 10 - 15 really important players keeping it afloat, booking bands from all over the country and even outside of it, everybody playing in the local bands with everybody else. Beautiful. | 1 | | eyesore Politicos Muertos
I think this is a first outing we can be proud of. Not flawless but a cut above a most first demos, I thought. I got the band together in Feb 2020, taught them the songs, and found the engineer. A lot of the premiere influences are post punk & goth groups like early Iceage, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Public Image Ltd, Sonic Youth, Protomartyr, Preoccupations, Sonic Youth, and assorted Nick Cave projects. Clearly it has a lot of hardcore punk in baked into its genes too, taking particular inspiration from the work of Youth Attack projects like Cadaver Dog, as well as more blackened punk like Sump, City Hunter, Arts, and Malveillance. The angular guitarwork of more left field metal groups like Deathspell Omega, Ulcerate, and Gorguts largely informs the songwriting as well, but we only play punk in E standard. We plan to record our own LP whenever the songs are all learned. I dearly thank Adam, Jacob, Philip, and Ethan for embarking on this journey with me. | 2 | | Judy And The Jerks Bone Spur
Perhaps the most famous of all the Hattiesburg bands. They got covered by Pitchfork a couple of years ago. Punk scenes know their name all across the US because of the extensive touring they've done. They've patched together a kinetic, quirky, and angular sound that many, including me, find very entertaining. I've admired them at a distance for years. They've been on a long hiatus but I think they're still together. Can't wait for more tunes. They put on a great live show as well. Nobody's name is actually Judy lol. P.S. Hampton plays bass but it seems like he basically puts the whole scene on his back. He books, plays in half the bands, records and produces nearly everyone, makes zines and flyers, and makes videos of local and touring acts. And he likes dogs and works at a pet shelter. Real renaissance man, that one. https://judyandthejerks.bandcamp.com/album/bone-spur | 3 | | Dumspell Dumspell
Perhaps my favorite of all the Hattiesburg bands. A very powerful post punk act that isn't afraid to go fuckin' fast. Something about the dark melodicism, glassy and reverbed guitar tone, and Samantha's blasé vocal delivery make them sound so cool and stylish. My favorite songs they ever did were probably Island and Slumber Party. They're defunct now, but they were one of the most inspiring groups to me. The ones that made playing "cooler than thou" punk rock and using more power chords on the guitar seem like a great idea. https://erstetheketontraeger.bandcamp.com/album/ett-074-dumspell-s-t-lp | 4 | | Soft Spot Demo
These guys were gnarly. Twice as heavy in the flesh. Halfway between oddball and cut throat, but all hardcore punk. Cody, the guitarist in Dumspell, drums in this and he's a monster. I've known the singer, Harley, since I was like 15 years old. We'd run into each other at hardcore shows in Jackson. Austin, the guitarist in Judy, also plays guitar here. He's so good, always knows where to find some iconic sounds on the neck. https://softsoftspotspot.bandcamp.com/album/demo | 5 | | Nossiens Nossiens
This is truly unique. I gave these guys an entry just so I could 4.5 it months ago. It's crazy that a local Mississippi band that no one knows about wrote songs this excellent. I met Tony when he asked me to do a No Wave themed improv session with him and some other Hattiesburg musicians, years before I ever actually moved. Motherfucker still hasn't put it out. He would go on to record and mix eyesore's demo. Stupidly talented kid, with a good ear for songwriting and guitar playing. So is his brother Nick, who I think lead this band in addition to playing guitar and sing. I think their other brother directs movies?? Why can this family do it all? Hal is the other guitarist and he's probably one of the best players I've met. Many others feel the same. Quinn is definitely one of the best drummers in town, taste for days. I think they sit somewhere stylistically between post punk and post rock. Audiophiles and true music fans must listen to this. https://nossiens.bandcamp.com/ | 6 | | The Limbos The Limbos
This one is very special to me because the singer, Tyler, showed me this whole scene. I might not know anything about it if not for him. I'm glad he helped me be who I am right now. Not to mention this is some of the very best, toughest punk you'll ever hear out of MS. https://thelimbospunk.bandcamp.com/album/the-limbos | 7 | | Control Room Options
Austin plays guitar in Judy and Soft Spot, but this is his cold/darkwavey post punk project where he plays bass and shows off his great voice. Another guy does the synths and drum machine but I've never met him. Pure style. https://controlroomband.bandcamp.com/album/options | 8 | | Dream/Window Decomposed Works
My friend Tony's greatest feat so far. He wrote and recorded and produced his monolith HIMSELF. Recorded it all except for drums, done by our friend, Quinn. Proves the level of genius happening in this town. The guitars are genuinely nuts and the songs are so well put together. This and another recording were the reasons I just KNEW it had to be him recording the eyesore demo. This runs the gamut of post punk, noise rock, post rock, progressive rock and more. https://dreamwindow.bandcamp.com/album/decomposed-works | |
