Female-fronted Metal

In no particular order, here's some modern femmes that have made a big impact on metal for me. I'm sure there's some I missed, so be sure to let me know about those. Bands like Theatre of Tragedy, Epica, and Tristania/Sirenia are absent because I'm not much into gothic metal. But I must say, metal in many cases would not be the same without a woman's touch. Not counting all the great female guest singers that have appeared here and there on awesome metal tracks, here's some nods to actual front-women.
22Oathbreaker
Rheia

I'm still digesting this album but Caro Tanghe's vocals are just incredible to behold. I adore the post-rock/post-metal feel she bring to this record and I can't even imagine how inferior the album would sound with a male singer instead.
21Butcher Babies
Take It Like a Man

This is a fun nu-metal band with dual-femme vocalists. Nothing new exactly but a lot of fun if you like the genre and feminine singing/screams.
20The Gathering
Mandylion

I actually have not listened to this band's debut metal album, but still it feels weird not to mention The Gathering in a list like this, even if they did not indulge in metal for most of their career. I have to consider them at least an honourable mention for they were an incredible band and Anneke van Giersbergen was a front-woman to behold.
19Within Temptation
Mother Earth

I'm not much into this kind of cheesy metal in general, but this album left a mark on me back in the day. Huge nod to Sharon den Adel for her vocal work on this.
18Iwrestledabearonce
Hail Mary

People like to shit on this band because of their hipster image and song-titles but the truth is they pushed the genre of metalcore to fringes previously unexplored by many. They eventually matured into an incredible outfit that produced a modern brand of unique and unhinged music, but even their early material pushed the boundaries of metalcore by seamlessly mixing it with early 70’s disco sequences and other bizarre musical elements that many would not dare to fuck with. Massive respect for the band's two front-women Krysta Cameron and Courtney LaPlante!
17Amesoeurs
Amesoeurs

Audrey Sylvain's vocals really provide a much needed femininity to gorgeous black-gaze band Amesoeurs. Love this shit.
16Destiny Potato
Lun

I don’t have much to say about Destiny Potato other than that they are a weird pop-rock band that occasionally indulges in bouts of djenty metal that I stumbled upon… I’m not sure where they fit in the female pantheon of metal exactly but Aleksanda Djelmas puts on a hell of a show.
15Dreaming Dead
Midnightmares

If you’re a big fan of Death and you’re not listening to this band you’re doing it wrong. Lead singer/guitarist Elizabeth Schall is the living embodiment of Chuck Schuldiner, in her riffs and her vocal approach. This band is fucking amazing! What the fuck are you doing with your life not listening to these guys??
14Lacuna Coil
Unleashed Memories

Despite being seemingly an object of perpetual sexual fantasy amongst her fanbase, I must acknowledge Cristina Scabbia. She was one of the prominent female singers in the late 90’s, the precursor to Amy Lee of Evanescence in a way. While I was never a big fan of her band in particular, it’s hard to ignore the head-turning front-woman she was as well as the fervent obsession she engendered among her fans.
13Despised Icon
Consumed by Your Poison

As a big Despised Icon fan, I had actually not listened to much of their debut album featuring Marie-Helene Landry on vocals until now, and damn I’m blown away! As incredible as Alex and Steve were in her place, Marie held her own and then some on their debut.
12Draconian
Turning Season Within

A modern Swedish gothic metal band that still utilizes the classic beauty/beast vocals, Draconian deserves a special mention. Their album Turning Seasons Within had a big impact on me back in the day, so special shout-out to them and singer Lisa Johansson.
11Conflict (RUS)
Transform Into a Human

Conflict is basically modern Fear Factory, except with a female singer. And while that gimmick seems kind of underwhelming and derivative, their debut release is an underrated beast.
10Nightwish
Oceanborn

On their third female singer now, Nightwish has long pioneered female vocals in symphonic metal. No need to elaborate as they are well known and respected by now.
9Myrkur
Mareridt

A controversial band perhaps, but Amalie Bruun is a captivating vocal presence as well as a jack-of-all-trades instrumentally.
8Scarling.
Sweet Heart Dealer

When Jack Off Jill broke up, Jessicka formed an even more amazing band, this time a very dark post-rock band with occasional metal elements. Absolutely heart-stopping underrated stuff.
7Jack Off Jill
Clear Hearts Grey Flowers

This band started as groupies for Marilyn Manson, and in spite of that they have left a big mark on 90’s rock/metal. Huge shout out to Jessicka, who’s my girl despite major health issues ultimately complicating her musical career. Please get well and release more music < 3
6Spiritbox
Spiritbox

The new incarnation of now defunct Iwrestledabearonce, Spiritbox is a more mature version of her predecessor band. I can’t say enough good things about this release, other than that everyone has majorly slept on it and it deserves 10x more attention than any Iwrestledabearonce release. If you have any interest in post-rock, metalcore, or female vocals, don’t let this release pass you by.
5Jinjer
King of Everything

I was introduced to this band via their recent single Pisces which was a sublime meld of The Gathering and death metal. I feel like it was a bait and switch because the rest of the new album is nothing like the single, but I still have to shout out this band because Tatiana Shmailyuk is a goddess from another world and I expect great things from this band in the future.
4Kittie
Oracle

I have to tip my cap to Kittie for several reasons. On their sophomore release Oracle, they really pushed the boundaries of heaviness and versatility in nu-metal. But the reason I truly respect them is that the whole reason the band came to exist is that they were told by their peers that they would fail because they were female. They helped to inspire an entire MTV generation of girls to get up and pursue their love of metal despite the inherent stigma of them doing so. I fucking love Kittie and everything they stood for in the genre and for their gender at the time.
3Otep
House of Secrets

Even hardcore nu-metal fans tend to shit on Otep, mainly over her politics, but I think she’s been impactful and relevant enough over the years to merit discussion. As a front-woman I think she brings a lot to the table lyrically and emotionally as a gay woman with a history of suffering sexual abuse as a child. Also, her band brings the nu-metal riffs and bass-lines like nobody’s business.
2Conjonctive
Until The Whole World Dies

Conjuctive is a slightly-blackened death metal band with some deathcore influences that split vocal duties between a male and a female. There’s not much in the way of melodies from the female side, her role in the band is mostly to deliver a slightly different texture of screams and growls to complement her guttural male counter-part, and the result makes for a delightfully diverse tapestry of anguished male/female vocals playing off of each other over the utter cacophony.
1Arch Enemy
Wages of Sin

When Angela replaced Liiva it was a huge deal. The band took a major chance by replacing their legendary singer with a female, but Angela filled his big shoes with ease and arguably grew an even bigger legacy with the band. Shout out to Alyssa (who I’m not nearly as familiar with) but she looks and sounds fantastic even though I hate the overall direction the band took when they took her on. But major props to Angela, she’s a legend in her own right.
