my 20 favorite songs

mostly alphabetically, limit 1/artist kinda
1Bjork
Vespertine

It's Not Up to You. honestly I could've put Unison or Pagan Poetry here too but this song just gives me the biggest smile so here it is. it's one of Bjork's most lush compositions with a beautiful chorale finale of the song's title.
2The Brave Little Abacus
Just Got Back from the Discomfort - It's Alright

The blah blah blahs. the "it's these ideas that waste all my time" refrain into the opening video game keyboard effect fucking melts me every. time.
3Burial
Truant/Rough Sleeper

another really tough choice but I think ultimately Rough Sleeper encapsulates everything I love about his work... the crackling vinyl hiss, fragmented and broken melodies that swirl within a nocturnal ambiance, it's all here. sure, it's a multipart suite that doesn't flow as well as Bohemian Rhapsody but it's still a beautiful epic song. imo, Burial is at his best when he's at his most un-Burial... i.e., taking risks and using his style as a foundation to build off rather than the making it the house itself (see 'Raver' or 'Come Down to Us')
4Danny L Harle
Broken Flowers

this is a fairly new addition. imo, the first 5 min version single he released in 2013 is his best. it's neo pop with FAT synth pads and an infectious repetitive hook
5The Cure
Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

just like heaven. happy cure = best cure imo
6George Clanton
100% Electronica

Never Late Again. best 80s song not from the 80s
7Julia Holter
Have You In My Wilderness

Feel You. it's impossible to see... whooooooo I'm waiting forrrrrr in my raaaaaaainnncooooat *climactic strings*
8mewithoutYou
It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All A Dream! It's Alright!

underrated album but i think everyone can agree that king beetle is a top 3 mwY song. I've cried to this song on more than one occasion and it has sentimental value to me since it was playing as we drove into the hotel we were staying at on a roadtrip I took with my ex
9My Bloody Valentine
Loveless

I Only Said. how is this song not more unanimously beloved???
10My Bloody Valentine
m b v

okay Im breaking my own rule but Who Sees You is just too damn cool not to be included... gauzy and silky and sexy all at once
11Radiohead
Kid A

In Limbo a cryptic fractured pop song that descends into absolute madness that is as frightening as it is mesmerizing
12Slowdive
Souvlaki

Alison. always wanted to date an Alison just so I could play this for her. dream pop of the highest degree
13Sonic Youth
EVOL

Star Power. Kim has never sounded so confident and sexy. great pop song for Halloween
14The Tammys
Egyptian Shumba

aaAAAAH AAAAH AAH egyptian shumba e e aaAAH AAAH ehyptian shumba
15Tears for Fears
Songs from the Big Chair

Everybody Wants to Rule the World. second best song from the 80s and the de facto soundtrack to any John Hughes film this side of Ferris Beuller's Day Off
16Les Rallizes Denudes
'77 Live

Night of the Assassins. buna, bu buna, bu buna, bu buna buna buna, bu buna, bu buna while a family of amplifiers gets brutually murdered by a japanese ghost
17Jeff Rosenstock
We Cool?

You, In Weird Cities. just a perfect power pop punk song that tells of juvenile loss and longing that's so relatable it hurts
18Jeff Buckley
Grace

Grace. there's the moon asking to stay, long enough for the clouds to fly away... such a dark beautiful song that shows Buckley's range. truthfully, his voice can be a little much at times (the end of Mojo Pin, the preceding track, for example) but in this song, no note is extraneous; each seems perfectly placed with reason and intent
19JANK
Awkward Pop Songs

Kentucky Castle. RIP
20Alison's Halo
Eyedazzler 1992-1996

Torn. apt title since it tears me in fucking two with its swells and waves of cotton candy guitar
