04.15.23 | Step 1: Don't go to LA |
Ryus
04.15.23 | @calmrose thank u :] only been once when i was young so i am very excited
@purple understandable |
Trebor.
04.15.23 | Hiking in Malibu is great. I would hit the griffith observatory or the getty/ getty villa if you like museums and sights. You can also hike to the observatory.
Driving anywhere from santa monica fucking sucks so keep that in mind. It's also probably gonna be in the 90s to 100s if you're not near the beach.
Venice strip is pretty cool, lots of crazy characters and weirdo shops. Venice is also a better spot for surfing or boogie boarding because it's less touristy than santa monica |
Ryus
04.15.23 | "Driving anywhere from santa monica fucking sucks so keep that in mind."
lol yeah this was our concern. where would u stay in LA if u were visiting and wanted to be close-by to good food and stuff to do but perhaps not around the hollywood area |
Trebor.
04.15.23 | probably north hollywood or echo park |
PotsyTater
04.15.23 | I’ve never been to LA but it seems the general consensus is that it is one of the circles of hell |
Ryus
04.15.23 | im from nyc so im not a stranger to most of the issues people point to when they say LA sucks. except traffic lol. thatll be a fun one
super excited to see some nature that i could never see on the east coast. and eat tacos
@treb appreciate the insight, will keep that in mind |
Trebor.
04.15.23 | There's so many things to do but it's definitely depressing to live here if you aren't a millionaire |
PotsyTater
04.15.23 | ?? Isn’t New York traffic also terrible? |
Ryus
04.15.23 | i mean sure but i dont know a single person who drives in the city including myself so its kinda a non factor
as such, ppl dont really point to it as something that sucks about nyc |
PotsyTater
04.15.23 | Also everyone I know speaks positively of New York with the caveat of it being expensive as shit and everyone being (endearingly) rude af but everyone I know speaks negatively of LA with the caveat of… nothing. |
PotsyTater
04.15.23 | “ mean sure but i dont know a single person who drives in the city including myself so its kinda a non factor”
Gotcha |
Ryus
04.15.23 | unless u have to commute in and out of the city. then its a different story |

im excited to make snide comparisons between the two cities every chance i get

PotsyTater
04.15.23 | Cape cod slaps there are no caveats |
Trebor.
04.15.23 | "Why would LA be better for music than New York"
Tons of tours start and end in LA. LA and new york probably have about equal amounts of concerts a year, but LA is also close to tons of other places with tons of concerts (las vegas, coachella, other festival crap, san diego, san francisco and such)
My dad has gone to 100 concerts a year since he was 18 and that was only possible because he lives in this area. He used to go to vegas once a month to see some crazy shit |

04.15.23 | Yeah that's why I party it up here in the Northern part of the state |
heyadam
04.15.23 | LA resident here — if you’re staying out the west side (Santa Monica) it might be tougher to get around if you’re relying on Lyft/Uber, as it’s just a little more isolated from the rest of the city and traffic is absolutely ass out that way. Pretty much anywhere else in the city would be more centra-located.
Academy Museum is actually worth it for film love! If you can catch a show at the Walt Disney concert hall, the acoustics are insane. Other than that, 98% of the clubs are the same vibe as far as live music goes (but still cool). For record stores, def hit up Amoeba as the touristy but good record/cd/etc. Hollywood in general is not worth it at all, even as a tourist trap lol.
For hiking, there’s good in-city hiking, but if you’re down to go about thirty mins east from LA, “Eaton Canyon” is some great hiking.
For food, if you’re into ramen, slurpin ramen bar in K-town is god tier. Obvi hit up the taco trucks when you see one and you’re feeling it! Feel free to shoutbox me if you want more suggestions! |

04.15.23 | @heyadam we're renting a car haha i think id go insane trying to rely on rideshare for a week. appreciate all the advice man, definitely going to check out amoeba and the academy museum

04.15.23 | well go to vegas then |
heyadam
04.15.23 | and if you guys are into Korean food, oo-kook in Korea town is hella good for kbbq.
Forgot to mention that El Matador state beach is probs my fav beach in the city — it has easy access to beach caves in the area and it’s never crowded. Def worth it if you’re looking to go to a beach that isn’t Santa Monica/Venice |
budgie
04.15.23 | check the beach towns in north county SD |
Ryus
04.15.23 | how far is the drive budgie n which ones would u recommend
@heyadam love korean food, will make a note of that beach too thx dude |

04.15.23 | if you plan well and avoid rush hour it's 90 minutes on the very lower end from santa monica /DTLA toward carlsbad. carlsbad, encinitas and solana beach area are great. way less populated
claremont is kinda a neat town if you're going toward inland empire
shitton of asian places around walnut
take a ferry to catalina imo. really nice hiking on the north end of the island and avalon is a suuuuper cute beach city. ice cream shops, snorkeling, kayaking to kayak-only-access coves to picnic at, lots of marine wildlife, everyone drives around in golf carts
idk if that's realistic to stuff in within a week though |
robertsona
04.15.23 | things I liked:
The Huntington gardens or whatever in San Marino or whatever. $25 entrance fee; my rec is that it’s so huge and elaborate you can’t scoff
Toothpick lamb at chengdu taste in alhambra, 10/10
Zhengyalov Hatz in Glendale—best vegan dish I’ve had in a restaurant (titular dish)
Philippe the original (more for the history, food is good too tho; number of similar places)
Guisados tacos—chorizo like my mom’s fakey delicious hamburger helper meals growing up, bistec reminiscent of my dad’s fancy delicious stews
Walt Disney concert hall—saw Bach’s mass in B minor here
Grand central market mexican food
The last bookstore
King bowl Chinese food
Marielas taco ($1.65 and delicious)
The win~Dow ($3.95 good burger)
Coffee memes (I swear it’s good. I’m using parentheses now. Owned by Koreans)
Jay’s bar ($10 6 gyoza and kirin pint, in a strip mall)
Marouch—Armenian I think
Bhan kanom Thai—watching the lady make the crepe desserts is a modern wonder of the world
Park’s bbq—expensive Korean BBQ. Best meats
Idle hour—dumb cool bar inside a big barrel
Tsujita LA ramen noodle—luscious tsukemen. ALMOST “too much”
The bounty room in Torrance LA—$3 wells and $2.50 domestic beers until 6
Drink Pliny the elder
Go to a beach
Have fun |

04.15.23 | Why in particular L.A.? Parts of America hold great appeal to me as places to visit, but not there. |
normaloctagon
04.15.23 | Seconding treb’s Griffith observatory rec! Great views. Idr where u are currently but the food in LA is probably definitely better so hit some food trucks and get some donuts and whatnot. Bring sunscreen, and a mask the smog is really bad |
Ryus
04.15.23 | good to have a new yorkers perspective here 🙏
@isis because i have been to nearly every other large american city that interests me and i wanna see some cool nature and beaches and eat tacos and my girlfriend lives relatively close by :] |

04.15.23 | @norma i am currently in boston so yes but i am from new york so i know good food but perhaps not mexican food and korean food based on what west coasters have told me

04.16.23 | have a nice life are coming to la in late june and tickets are still available!! |
climactic
04.16.23 | consider staying in topanga if you’re staying on the west side, its super beautiful and quiet up in the mountains, just minutes from the beach/SM/malibu though. if you do stay in SM stay as far as possible from the 3rd street promenade/pier, its a tourist hellscape. also get thai food in east hollywood/thai town. best in the country |
Trebor.
04.16.23 | whatever you do don't go to california pizza kitchen |

04.16.23 | A person who hasn’t been to cali a lot has to see La once but you learn quickly all the good things about la can be experienced in Monterey. Sure you can’t become famous there but there’s fewer crackheads, as many nice beaches(and they’re freezing!), and a lot of great overpriced food. Sf is similar sure but way colder. You can actually surf in Santa Cruz. |
Emim
04.16.23 | Monterey is great. I'd say hit up the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz and then go to Capitola, it's much nicer.
I avoid SF at all costs |
