09.20.22 | I've only seen The Host but I absolutely love it. Been meaning to get around to watching Parasite and Snowpiercer though. Heard a ton of good things about Parasite specifically | Trebor.
09.20.22 | One of my fave filmographies
His english language two are def my least favorite
Mother is so good | TheSonomaDude
09.20.22 | snowpiercer is probably the best action film of its decade, cliches aside
one of the most solid filmagraphies ever | Jasdevi087
09.20.22 | "that last flashforward in MoM is so unnecessary and kinda silly. still one of the greatest films i've seen tho"
I actually disagree with this, I think that scene gets maligned quite unfairly. I think it does a great job of tying together the movie's themes exploring the fiction that often surrounds serial killer investigations. and idk, if that final shot is the sort of touch in a movie that you get worked up about, then like, idk, touch some grass lol (not saying you do row, referring to the rym kiddie types that genuinely throw tantrums about it). the scene directly before it wouldn't really be all that more compelling a note to end it on tbh.
though in saying that, all of his movies seem to have you going "aight, this is the final scene" and then there's like 30 more minutes to the movie lmao. | Jasdevi087
09.20.22 | "like "oh he's staring at us, any of us could be the killer, do you get it?" yeah we kinda got all that from the first two hours you don't need to hammer it home"
ahh no, see that's actually the kicker. the movie is actually based on a real south korean serial killer case, who at the time, hadn't been caught. Bong Joon-Ho has Park look at the camera because he figured there was a good chance the real serial killer was actually watching the movie, and he hoped it would scare the shit out of him. it's not some fluffy social commentary on how "it could be any of us", it was literally targeted at the real guy
"that kind of tonal disconnect is a thing he frequently works with though tbf."
yeah that's a massive part of his style, sets you up thinking your getting one thing and then it gets way too dark and you suddenly have no idea what the fuck you thought you were gonna watch. taika waititi used to do this really well too | combustion07
09.20.22 | These comments really made me want to see Memories of Murder. Knew nothing of it before this but I will definitely track it down soon | insomniac15
09.20.22 | Saw only Parasite and Snowpiercer, I have to check out the rest of his movies. Will start with Memories of Murder | Zac124
09.20.22 | Top 3 is top 3. One of the best directors ever. None of his films are even remotely meh in my opinion.
My ranking: 2, 3, 1, 5, 7, 6, 4 |
