| Umbrella Contest 2021 Round 12: 11 Umbrellas Each
2 more out, 3 left, and the rules are different this round. | 1 | | The Kinks Lola vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround
The final round has totally new rules! Make me a playlist consisting of 1 song per genre covered in the order of the rounds. All of your choices must be songs I don't already know. The playlist can be on Spotify, Youtube, or any place where I don't have to download anything.
That means: Song 1: Lo-fi
Song 2: Psychedelic
Song 3: Sampling
Song 4: Sentimental Ballad
Song 5: Instrumental
Song 6: Show Tunes
Song 7: Traditional/Cultural
Song 8: Comedy
Song 9: Dance
Song 10: Easy Listening
Song 11: Experimental
All 11 songs will be averaged for your final score.
And now for some honorable mentions: | 2 | | Beat Happening You Turn Me On
This album is now on my "need to eventually check" list because āGodsendā is amazing. Thanks, dedex! | 3 | | Linda Perhacs Parallelograms
I've loved "Chimacum Rain" for a while, so knowing another song on here (the t/t) ruled too pushed me to check this in full and it's a 4/5 album for sure. Thanks, bgillesp! | 4 | | Comus First Utterance
"Song to Comus" was a truly what the hell kind of song in the best way and the album's a 4/5. Thanks, Aberf! | 5 | | Egberto Gismonti Sonho 70
Really pretty song, I'll try to check the album eventually. This is a good list for safekeeping. Thanks, protokute! | 6 | | Nina Simone I Put a Spell on You
āMarriage Is for Old Folksā was caught in my head for a week after that round happened and it's amazing. If I ever dive into Nina, I guess it'll be with this album. Thanks, Tifolium! | 7 | | Eels Beautiful Freak
"Your Lucky Day in Hell" and "Novocaine for the Soul" are both amazing, why haven't I checked this album yet? I'm gonna do it sometime before 2021 ends! Thanks, SlothcoreSam! | 8 | | Burt Bacharach Living Together
It's too bad that this album on the whole is boring as hell and a solid 2.5/5, but "Something Big" is hands down the best song I learned from this round. It's perfect. Thanks, Zig!
And now for what you guys are waiting for: | 9 | | Henry Cow In Praise of Learning
SlothcoreSam
āWarā
Proggy off the bat and kinda Zappa inspired. High pitched cartoonish German vocals are cool. Random scraping sounds and a saxophone solo, okay cool. This is pretty fun.Definitely experimental, but in a realm that feels personally familiar.
4/5 (Finalist!) | 10 | | Arrigo Barnabe Clara Crocodilo
Zig
āAcapulco Drive-inā
Funky and jazzy. I like how offbeat everything sounds and the bass is awesome. Great vocals too. This is weird in a familiar way again, but itās amazing and jazzy and that piano solo is fun as hell so, Iām digging this.
4.4/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = = 4.9/5 (ROUND WINNER, but no BONUS going forward cuz the final round is different!) (Finalist!) | 11 | | Stereolab Sound-Dust
Trifolium
āSpace Mothā
Twinkly and foreboding so far. Good vocals as expected from Stereolab and I like the buildup that brought us there. Very spacey, and while it fits, it wasnāt shockingly experimental or anything, mostly just pretty and chill, I did like it though.
3.8/5 (ELIMINATED!) | 12 | | Arthur Russell World of Echo
Ryus
āBeing Itā
Weird and echoey. So the liner notes say this is the cello Iām hearing, but it sounds like guitar, thatās mad weird, is it an electric cello? His voice is okay, but I canāt say I like it, but it seems like something that could grow on me. More on the minimal side of experimental for sure, but pretty impressive conceptually regardless.
4/5 (Finalist!) | 13 | | Moor Mother Circuit City
botulist
āNo More Wiresā
More jazz. āNo more wiresā a guy frantical chants over a jamming saxophone. This is scary as hell now with all of the intensity and the crashing sounds. This might be dragging on too much for me. Not bad, but not amazing.
3.5/5 (ELIMINATED!) | |

Often the first thing that comes to my mind is the best, if I over think things, I end up muddling it all up. | ArsMoriendi
09.27.21 | Fair enough
Now let's see what Ryus and Zig come up with :P | fogza
09.27.21 | Trif had so many round wins, but has fallen at the final hurdle š„ | Ryus
09.27.21 | oh man this is gonna be hard | SlothcoreSam
09.30.21 | OK I got a compendium for my tracks.
1. Aussie lo-fi garage punk
2. Psychedelic soul by a legend who helped inspire the Hip Hop movement
3. Another Eels song, this time off a different album, with a different feel. It sampled 2 tracks, Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll by Vaughan Mason and Crew. As well as, Bananeira by Emilio Santiago.
4. Another Australian indie ballad.
5. An ear worm of a track, this is experimental Avant-garde jazz. So addicitve.
6. Slapp Happy are a German/English avant-pop group, formed in Germany in 1972. They later formed with Henry Cow, I chose their song "War" for the experimental round. This song is Cabaret Pop, so could be used in a musical show easily.
7. Some more classical Tuvan Throat singing.
8. 80s Australian Comedy. You might hate this one, but it is funny.
9. French Canadian Arty Dance Punk band. This song will get you first bopping your head and feet, and as it gets louder and heavier you will find yourself jumping around the room banging into things, or maybe your head into things. It is one of those crazy stupid songs you will go mental too.
10. The slow pace of this next song is the perfect come down from the last song, and you should recognize Jennifer Charles voice. However, it is not just the vocals that makes this great, the instruments add a creepy gloomy atmosphere.
11. Prog Rock out of France, experimental in the fact they made up their own language, and incorporated operatic elements and other non traditional rock to develop their own style of progressive rock that they termed Zeuhl. | Ryus

10.02.21 | I will announce a winner tomorrow!
Previous winners:
2018: NeroCorleone - chose Nina Nastasia - Run to Ruin (back when the reward was only 1 album, I loved it, 4/5, still listen to stuff by her to this day.)
2020: LordePots - chose Hampster Dance - The Album and Kidz Bop 40 (reward was 2 albums and a review for one of them and I reviewed Hampster Dance -T he Album, albums were a 1.5 and 1 respectively)
(I like to think of Gazelle Twin - Unflesh and Stereolab - Dots and Loops as his real recs because their songs did so much heavy lifting for him in the final round and I love both albums, especially Dots and Loops.)
2021: ?????
Hope guys thought of your 2 albums, but DONT SAY THEM, my excitement or apprehension about them might subconsciously affect your scores. | JohnnyoftheWell
