Umbrella Contest 2021 Round 11: The Umbrella 2000

2 more out and we have a final 5!
1Holly Herndon
Platform

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The theme this round is Experimental. Pretty much the opposite of the last round. Make me go WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? The less it sounds like it could be on the radio, the better. It can be pure atonalism, or just avant-pop, but keep it weird. I still need to enjoy it though!

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)

***The winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***

“Your Lucky Day in Hell”

I like the bell sounds and the drums a lot off the bat. Ooh, is that a mellotron type sound? This has some 60s vibes to it, but it’s very chill. “Winston Churchhill in drag.” I feel like I’m extra overdue for being into Eels. Between this awesome song and “Novocaine for the Soul.” Easy on the ears, but certainly not boring!

4.7/5 (Passed to next round)

“All I Need”

Trip hoppy vibes. No individual music element is really standing out other than the sultry vocals, but they do work together to make a pleasant song. That low-frequency oscillating synth line is neat.

3.9/5 (Passed to next round)

“In the Waiting Line”

More straightforward vocals, but still ones that make me think of trip hop. This honestly has early-2000s adult contemporary radio pop vibes. I appreciate her intensity and that key solo is pretty. This is quality stuff.

4.1/5 (Passed to next round)
5Agnes Obel

Pangea
“Brother Sparrow”

Folky guitar and piano that kinda grabs you. Her vocals have that “modern indie folk” quality. That pickup with the percussion is not for me at all. I feel like this is just hipster Lumineers now. The first half was better.

3/5 (ELIMINATED!)
6Burt Bacharach
Living Together

Zig
“Something Big”

Bossa nova guitar and warm lush vocals. So this is literally from the genre of easy listening? Ooh those backup vocals and brass! And a string pickup! Now there’s sax. Really building up without offending the ear. Seriously, brass is underrated and here it’s beautiful. Man, why is easy listening stereotyped as lame? This shit is awesome.

5/5 (ROUND WINNER! handicap (for others) of +0.5 for the next round)
7Melody Gardot
Currency of Man

Trifolium
“It Gonna Come”

Swirling sax and a great drum beat. Soulful voice, nice strings, and an overall commanding attitude. “What does it mean?” I don’t know. This is cool, but I’m not in love with it. And don’t worry, I know that that outro doesn’t count haha.

3.7/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 4.2/5 (Passed to next round)
8The Creatures
Boomerang

“Killing Time”

Very echoey vocals. Intense and jazzy pickup. I won’t take off points, but this is definitely the harshest of the songs chosen this week. This is good and all, but it’s a little sparser and less ear catching. I’m just not feeling it, sorry!

3.4/5 (ELIMINATED!)
