| 80s R.E.M. ranked
I finally checked Chronic Town and Murmur, so why not? It's a really consistent chain of albums...well mostly. | 7 | | R.E.M. Fables of the Reconstruction
This album is trying to be too many things honestly. Folky and funky? It kind of works... Plus I won't lie, the last 4 tracks are all really uninteresting.
Favorite: Maps and Legends
Least Favorite: Good Advices
3.5/5 | 6 | | R.E.M. Chronic Town
The opener is wonderful, and in general it was hint of what's to come, but it's far form brilliant. Above average by far for sure though.
Favorite: Wolves, Lower
Least Favorite: Gardening at Night
4/5 | 5 | | R.E.M. Green
This album showed them evolving into a more emotional and personal band and that's actually awesome. In a lot of ways it's an underrated album since people act like this was their first "mistake," but honestly, I'd take it over Fables any day.
Favorite: World Leader Pretend
Least Favorite: Hairshirt
4/5 | 4 | | R.E.M. Reckoning
Now this one is often treated like it's their 2nd best album ever, and it's gone some amazing moments, but it has far less highlights than some of their other albums (particularly the 3 above it) and I rarely revisit this one, even if my favorites from it are amazing.
Favorite: Time After Time (Annelise)
Least Favorite: Second Guessing
4/5 | 3 | | R.E.M. Lifes Rich Pageant
This album organizes itself in a way where I'd call it "a force to be reckoned with." It has a lot of shorter songs, so even if it gets slow, you know it'll pick right back up. It's the kind of album that seems over... almost too early.
Favorite: Underneath the Bunker (weird choice, but fuck is it fun)
Least Favorite: Hyena
4/5 | 2 | | R.E.M. Document
This album really solidifies what makes R.E.M. such an interesting band despite just being an "indie rock band" to many. Light political lyrics with catchy hooks and a shaking vocals and a jangly guitar just like all the others BUT for some reason this one seems more warm... more tender. Maybe it's because there's a track on it called Fireplace heh.
Favorite: Welcome to the Occupation
Least Favorite: Strange
4.5/5 | 1 | | R.E.M. Murmur
I'm really glad that this was my favorite, otherwise you guys would rip me apart lol. So many fun exciting ideas. It has this exuberance innocence to it that the others don't. It's kind of punky, but also folky, but it sounds so new and natural. I mean who sounded like this in 1983 AND was popular at the same time? It ushered in a new age of rock really.
Favorite: Radio Free Europe
Least Favorite: Catapult

absolutely | dispid
07.03.17 | the version of gardening at night from the eponymous album is my favorite REM song of all time | Rowan5215
07.03.17 | good ranking, Pageant is a lil higher than Document for me purely based on Fall On Me (maybe their finest 80s song) | ArsMoriendi
07.03.17 | Green above Murmur? Odd, but okay | jagride
07.03.17 | other than 1 being 1, disagree almost completely
document was a streak killer | SandwichBubble

07.03.17 | I disagree wholeheartedly. | DoofusWainwright
07.03.17 | 80s R.E.M. are good but I don't spunk my trunk over these albums. 'Murmur' is solid enough for a 4.5 no doubt but then it's a pretty sharp drop off to LRP at a 3.5 far as I'm concerned. Very patchy and really, a lot of their output in the 80s sounded damn similar/aimed for the same sweet spots. | WeepingBanana
