yeah, not sure we have a chance in reality. Not with that defence. I’m not Maguire’s biggest fan but his omission has left us short of experience
Attack is great, but we play such turgid football under Southgate anyway. I want him gone. At least get someone who’s shown something at club level. Even Potter would be better. People overestimate the quality of coaching in international football, the best ones are generally at club sides. |

I like Guehi. Chelsea fan so well aware of him as a former blue. But you need some experience for big tournaments. Familiarity helps too, and how often have Stones and Guehi actually played together? Yeah, LB is also a worry, as is the midfield balance (not sure about the idea that TAA will play there).

they’re my #2 team as well due to family connections / being into 90s Italian football but admittedly I’m not as clued up on how they’ve been performing. Gonna say it’s not the strongest Italy squad we’ve seen, but then it’s solid enough and look what happened last time (when similar things were said), you can never underestimate them

06.15.24 | "as is the midfield balance (not sure about the idea that TAA will play there)."
Agreed, Trent has some great qualities but he isn't a natural 8. A majority of the country want him to start though. I would have preferred Mainoo. Mainoo is a better short passer, dribbler and is amazingly press-resistant. Unfortunately the 8 position is a weak point this tournament for England. Mainoo and Wharton have incredibly high ceilings but still very young. Gallagher is industrious but not good enough on the ball. |
Demon of the Fall
06.15.24 | I would just play Mainoo personally. Bellingham can drop in when needed (especially vs tougher opponents) and Rice is fairly experienced now and both have shown leadership qualities. The pair could guide him. It was an area where risking the young player was probably worth it to aid balance. |

Surely Rice is the ‘6th’? Bellingham and TAA (according to rumours, would rather Mainoo) will be in front of him. 06.16.24 | didn't feel serbia really threatened at all even in the second half and we suffocated them from any real chances well. kane had a stinker though, the majority of our lack of attacking threat in the secnod half came from him doing his classic dropping too deep and not doing what a striker is actually supposed to and be a proper outball option. saka too was fantastic first half but was clearly out of gas within the first few minutes of the second and should have come off earlier. think this is why not taking someone like sterling could come back to bite us as no one out there outside of bellingham was really running at defenders and pulling them out of position which we sorely needed. |

06.16.24 | we don't particularly have a cm thats fully ready to partner rice though in any case, out of the options for the first match of the tourney i'd rather go with him over mainoo and gallagher (again because he's a great impact sub later) |

06.16.24 | Trent gave the ball away 3/4 times and didn't look comfortable |
bighubbabuddha
06.16.24 | Mainoo is calmer on the ball, can dribble with it and help transitions and never gives it away (especially in dangerous positions in front of defence like Trent did) |
DoofDoof
06.16.24 | I think Southgate thought the whole of this game would pan out like the first 30 minutes and that was working with Trent. Maybe underestimated Serbia a bit.

06.16.24 | ‘Trent was great first half’

06.16.24 | "not taking someone like sterling could come back to bite us"
Sterling is a LW not a RW
He's been dogshite this season for chelsea and was poor season before
Bowen and Palmer are brilliant options at RW |
DoofDoof
06.16.24 | Saka should have set up at least three goals in the first half (we converted just the one) but the movement in the box was non existent - the first half hour was a 2-0 performance, which if you do get that second it's game over.
Fair play to Serbia, they took the game to England, started winning the personal duels - Saka and Trent ran out of puff, and 'Tripps' was a flat nothing playing out of position. Stones is alarmingly slow, as is Harry Kane tbh.
Still, there is a killer team in there if it clicks, Foden needs to believe a bit more in particular. |

06.16.24 | I thought Saka was great in the first half, our best player. |

Sinternet
06.16.24 | "Sterling is a LW not a RW
He's been dogshite this season for chelsea and was poor season before"
not sure where i said he wasn't? he's blown hot and cold this season and last, been scapegoated for a lot of things that weren't solely his fault and still pulled decent goal tallies. he's always been inconsistent but when he goes for it he runs games and has performed pretty decently for england when needed, whcih is why i think it was a mistake not taking him along as an experienced option off the bench.
"What game was I watching then?"
the one where we dominated the midfield battle for 40 minutes and serbia barely had a sniff? i don't know exactly what people are expecting of someone in that position in the lineup but it's not exactly flair city, he did a decent job and things flowed through him nicely, sent saka away down the wings a couple of times really nicely.
mainoo is still too fresh to be a starter, bellinghams are a rare quality and i'd nearly always go for someone who has the familiarity with the squad to understand each other, over the obviously talented teenager who just today came on as a sub to make their competitive debut. the fact is we don't have a natural rice partner available atm with henderson's decline and general shittiness and so it's up for grabs for a fair few suitors, but i'd rather trent at the moment
foden was very disappointing, almost as wasteful as kane. don't think he's quite gelled with the current system yet. would like to see palmer get at least a half if not a start against denmark |

06.17.24 | "Not convinced Alexander Arnold is the answer, looks a sunshine player, good when we’re having it all our way…lost when we’re under the cosh"
Absolutely. For all the good he did in the first 30 mins (and I don't think he was THAT great, really), he nearly cost us a goal with a cheap giveaway. Spatial awareness in midfield is very different to at full / wing back. I'd start Mainoo over him in an instant, inexperience or not. At least he's actually a CM.
Good result but I can't see many positives to be honest. A couple of decent individual defensive displays (Guehi looked mostly composed and Rice held the fort down well, think we would've been screwed without him tbh) but the football after the first 30 minutes was so turgid and unnecessarily cautious. Sint made the point about Kane dropping deep, but that's what he does and is usually effective at feeding others. If it's not working when you have that level of talent in attack I'm inclined to blame the guy at the helm. Southgate is so instinctively negative and I think it rubs off on the players.
Bringing on the industrious Gallagher first and then a straight swap of Saka for Bowen (who nearly created a goal to be fair, but it wasn't a 'positive move') while Palmer remained chained to the bench despite Foden having a stinker, is an indication of how Southgate thinks about football |
DoofDoof
06.17.24 | I’d say Trippier is a bigger problem than Trent because his lack of offering anything going forward, plus being susceptible to losing possession, will not help whoever’s in front of him (or behind tbh).
Positives are that Kane and Foden surely can’t be as quiet again - and Saka might get fit enough to have over half an hour in the tank as the tourno progresses. |
bighubbabuddha
06.17.24 | I would drop Foden for Eze next game
Foden doesn't perform for England for whatever reason
Eze would provide an outlet from the left and spread the width with Saka on the right |
DoofDoof
06.17.24 | It’s tough dropping the PL Player of the Season though - we shit the bed without him then that’s a massive stick to smash Southgate in the face with

06.17.24 | I think the NL game actually made me kinda hopeful. Poland played better when they had the ball than anyone anticipated. We got a lot of chances but missed sharpness in terms of actually scoring. The fact that we still won relieves some of the pressure, without adding the arrogance that this squad will inevetably get when winning 4-1 (which it should've been given the chances they had).
With a little improvement I think they can have a fair game against any team I've seen so far in the tournament. Still think they'll lose to Portugal in quarters though. |

Trent needs to stay a bit deeper next to rice so he actually gets on the ball and has more space to ping passes. But a with foden kane and saka all in the team who is making runs behind for him to hit? Sort of feels Gareth has finally given into peer pressure in playing trent and foden but doesn't have a plan of how to make it work. Shaw injury massive blow to the side too. 06.20.24 | The truth is the England squad suits Bellingham being Rice's partner.
Then it would work like: CM Rice/Gallagher, CM Bellingham/Trent, AM Foden/Palmer, LW Gordon/Eze, RW Saka/Bowen FW Kane/Toney/Watkins
You might get 10% less impact from Bellingham but he could certainly hold his own in midfield, then you'd get a lot more from Kane, Foden and Palmer, plus more balance with a potential winger with speed on the left who can stay out wide. Foden for whatever reason in ineffective and maybe overshadowed by Bellingham in the current system.
Thing is, England are an 'all eggs in one basket' side, always. There's ALWAYS one main man (Shearer, Beckham, Rooney, Kane, etc) and now it's just The Bellingham Show near enough with everyone else going into their shells a bit. Hopefully, despite that, it clicks. |
Demon of the Fall
06.20.24 | yeah, the squad does suit Bellingham playing deeper. I thought that sacrifice may have to be made at some point. Whether waistcoat will is another matter

That was actually unbelievable. When none of the players look comfortable and keep losing it because they have no passing options, that’s a coaching issue. When there’s no coordinated press with players occasionally, seemingly randomly doing it individually, that’s a coaching issue

I was completely done with football around 2006 and haven’t really changed my opinion cemented by the premier league becoming a fucking funfair tourist attraction and clueless coked up little cunts wearing Stone Island clobber thinking their some hooligan firm.
It’s a souless parody of the game that without question had begun to lose its way in the mid nineties with the corporate bollocks and mass influx of foreign players changing the way the game itself was played which has massively come home to roost.
40% of fans are now Roger Nouveau types 99.9 of the players are brain dead acadamy clones and the game is dead.

06.21.24 | This is the least interested I've been. Seems to deteriorate each time there's a tournament
"with the corporate bollocks and mass influx of foreign players changing the way the game itself was played which has massively come home to roost."
idk how, but you managed to make a vaguely important point, but ruined it by blaming it on foreign players. I do think the corporate side has gotten out of control though. There are too many games for starters. The 'theatre' of it all has been cheapened and reduced to hyperbolic nonsense. Politics often saps enjoyment out of what should just be entertainment. The quality of football is occasionally quite good, sometimes completely dire because the players are shagged / injured all the time
I agree that it was nice seeing those maverick flair players of the 90s, as you don't really get many of them now. Brazil seems to have retained that culture to an extent, European football hasn't. Then again my love of football back then has to be somewhat dictated to by nostalgia, as a kid it just hit different |
zakalwe
06.21.24 | The foreign player thing completely altered the way clubs structured their teams, it also changed the way the game was played and how as a normal fan you related directly with the club.
It was too far removed from normal blokes on a pitch trying to win things.
Nostalgia doesn’t come into it, the game was different it was better.
Hooliganism was bad, the stadiums were shit, the quality was arguably worse but the passion, will to win and sense of pride was in a different league all together.
England for the most part have always been shit though to be fair. |

06.21.24 | "It was too far removed from normal blokes on a pitch trying to win things"
Professional footballers aren't normal blokes though. Now they just have even more money and are perhaps even more in the limelight at an earlier age. Pretending otherwise when we're talking about the 90s seems odd. Way back when? Yeah, sure. 90s? Nope.
and I may have a warped perspective because my own club has produced more of our 'own' players through the academy than it ever did in the 90s, plenty of which are local and / or have been at the club since age 7-8 etc. Sure, there are plenty of foreign stars, but they're just as capable of playing with passion as the local guys (sometimes more so)
I think relating to your club is something different (and personal) so to each their own, but my own disillusion with the game is nothing to do with 'foreign players' and more about how the 'product' has evolved in the last ten years in particular (and by that point the foreign influx had already been well established) |
Donchivo
06.21.24 | isn't 3rd place / 4 points likely to be enough? I'm not sure if it's H2H or GD first tbh, because that will affect things

06.21.24 | Boring, dissapointing game. Result in theory is good for us, but the way it happened looked absolutely uninspired. Substitutions were also incredibly headscratching. Should've ended as a 1-0 though, that VAR decision felt unfair. |
Icebloom
06.21.24 | "Boring, dissapointing game. Result in theory is good for us, but the way it happened looked absolutely uninspired"
Way too harsh imo, we were playing maybe the strongest side this tournament and didn't conceed too many chances. Kinda bad luck with the offside goal too (though 3 points would've been really undeserved) |
SmurkinGherkin
06.21.24 | No way in fuck was that offside fuck the modern interpretation of that law
Also the longest var wait of the tourney so far was with the English refs ahah |
SmurkinGherkin
06.21.24 | Good for my fantasy though ngl |
Donchivo
06.22.24 | This was the typical 50 / 50 decision for which VAR was NOT invented. Such a decision should be left standing as it is not a clear cut mistake. But it seems like some VAR intervention prompted them to rule the goal offside (as it took like a minute after the goal to rule it offside) and then a very lengthy check if that decision was correct, what the fuck???
I really don't know what is wrong with VAR; as both its use and decisions are getting worse over the years. It was inspired by American football where the main guiding principle is that only if there is very clear evidence, decisions get overturned. This was also proclaimed for football, I don't understand why it is so hard to stick to that.
BTW one of the better matches of the tournament, disagree hard with the notions of it being boring and few chances created. France should have decided it well ahead of that controversial call, but the Dutch had their chances too. I am intrigued with that oranje team, after a few torunaments with terrible football (but overachieving resultswise) they are becoming great to watch again like from 70s to mid 2000s. |
Pangea
06.22.24 | It was already ruled offside before the var check |

06.22.24 | even if anthony taylor has a gud game i still want to do nuffing more than lambast him becuz in every other universe he's a self important parking inspector. but in this one for sum reason he's committing crimes against football every week and we all have to suffer becuz of it. our ai overlords cant come soon enough
|
Scheumke
06.22.24 | I havn't seen the stats, but the pass completion from our entire midfield and offense felt atrociously low while watching it, except for Schouten who gets subbed for who the fuck knows why. Why Memphis is still playing is a mystery to me, the man hasn't hit a ball decently in 160 min of playing this tournament.
It's a good team that can make a very deep run if they get their shit together and we're hard to win against, but I haven't seen that form yet. |
Donchivo
06.22.24 | But they are an attacking minded team again which is different from recent past. And in both matches they created quite an amount of goalscoring opportunities and on the other hand they also conceded quite a fair share of that too... yeah Memphis didn't really shine yet. I'd like to see Malen, he had quite a decent campaign for Dortmund.
@Pangea: They signaled offside only 30 seconds after the goal. I wonder why it took them 30 seconds to take a decision if it was not due to external help... |
DDDeftoneDDD
06.22.24 | Ned vs France was cool. The game should have had goals though. Hope we have some Turkey for the afternoon meal. Time to see if we have a new Portugal, or the same old "living on the edge" one |

06.22.24 | "Czech, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Netherlands, France etc. all with those same colours
I was testing myself yesterday upon seeing the flags all up in a bar, stated my claim as to which was Slovakia and which was Slovenia (the only tricky one), before realising they were arranged in 'groups' to match the Euros"
Ahah did the same with them flags yesterday |

06.22.24 | Good lord that 2-0 own goal from Turkey was some next level amateurism. A team of two faces, because they're showong some real strenght in offense |

06.23.24 | Lol yeah that 2 0 from Portugal was the funniest moment so far. Idk why we're getting so many pitch invasions tho.
So, we're first in the group already and will play the 8ths on monday against a best 3rd. Hoping for Netherlands and France to do their jobs and get the 1 and 2 places in their group. I am also curious on the picked portuguese team for game 3, since there's still a lot of great players that still haven't played. |
Scheumke
06.23.24 | Bro you have nothing to fear from NL as a Portugese. I don't think we've won from you in my lifetime. Here in NL Portugal is our most feared opponent because we can just never win that match. They can be the worst team left in the tournament and we can be the best, we'll still lose lol |
Egarran
06.23.24 | Germany and invasions you know, let's just hope we can keep it to football. |

cricket T20 WC too, but then that's probably a very English issue as the rest of Europe doesn't care (and the games are often at highly inconvenient times, so can't say I've seen much so far) |

06.24.24 | India vs Pakistan pulled a decent crowd, even in the US. Which is not surprising I guess, as it's probably the one game that could sell well pretty much anywhere
I remember reading about dwindling interest / attendances in the Windies generally, as it's been happening for years. You'd think a WC (with the hosts involved) would generate a bit of buzz though. Shame
I'm still not sure what to make of the EUROs yet. The formatting is a little silly. I'm just hoping none of the 'favoured' nations gets through with 2/3 points or something daft. Barely any jeopardy. Knockouts should hopefully be fun |

06.25.24 | Italy vs Croatia was the clash of the "lucky teams", of those that somehow almost always manage to get through to the next round. And (no wonder here), Italy turned out to be the luckiest of them all.
It is such a treat seeing Donnarumma doing his thing, an amazing goalkeeper, he almost got away with the penalty this time as well. |
Demon of the Fall
06.25.24 | Italy would have most likely qualified even with a loss, the late equaliser effectively (most likely) knocked Croatia out
nice timing for my previous "jeopardy" comment, lol... the tournament needed that |

06.25.24 | Italians played just enough to qualify.
If the stakes were higher, namely a group with yet another behemoth like Germany, France etc, they would give everything they got. |
Scheumke
06.25.24 | The 1-1 was deserved when seeing the second half, crazy that it happens in final minute AGAIN. That's like the 5th time this tournament that goals fall in the final seconds of the game.
Slightly tense about the game tonight, though looking at the halves of the knockout schedule, it will benefit us if we end up either first or third of the group. |
Pheromone
06.25.24 | Scotland lool |

Demon of the Fall
06.26.24 | yeah, that was atrocious. We have to be amongst the worst group winners of all time. Ugh.
And yeah "I would pick Netherlands" (2)... it's a great opportunity on that side of the draw now, seemingly
Mainoo was obviously a better choice than both TAA and Gallagher (this isn't hindsight, said it before game 1)... maybe Southgate has finally realised it. That said I still wouldn't be against seeing Jude back there, as it's not like he playing well at 10 anyway and I think he has enough awareness, top level experience and technical ability to play in there and do a 'team job'.
Also, more Palmer please. The guy is an absolute maverick and if we're going to play such uninspiring team football, we need someone who can create something out of nothing |
Demon of the Fall
06.26.24 | also fair play to Austria, they've been great so far! |

06.26.24 | I mean we're terrible so it won't matter. We're arguably part of the reason for this perceived weakness on one side of the draw. Austria also might end up being better than some 'stronger' sides as it happens. Italy often appear underwhelming until they're not (once the knockouts hit). We'll see |
Egarran

yeah, the issue with that is money, power and 'technicalities' were all on his side. I believe the alleged victim. Reporters with a greater understanding of law and the case itself have provided evidence that's out there for all to see. It's convincing and comes from usually reliable sources. Sometimes you just have to call out the bullshit where you see it. Not reaching a guilty verdict is different from saying 'he's innocent'
but yeah I won't go into it any further. Like I said, it's out there if you want to find it. I'm just shocked at how successfully this seems to have been quashed, when other (minor) celebrities are often dragged over hot coals for even the mere association of potentially having done something criminal (even without enough evidence for a trial in the first place) |

06.27.24 | messi >>> ronaldo, both as a player and a person |
bighubbabuddha
06.27.24 | I respect your opinion but disagree.
For one, the case was civil and not criminal. The accuser was asking for a hush money settlement of about 26m dollars. From my understanding there was a hush money agreement of like 300,000 dollars already in place but that is in no way an admission of guilt. Even if hypothetically the civil case had gone through and favoured the accuser, Ronaldo by law would not be a rapist with a criminal record but simply obliged to pay a hush pay settlement.
Secondly the civil case got dismissed because the accuser's lawyer used stolen confidential documents and committed bad-faith conduct, making it impossible to have a fair, impartial jury.
There's no criminal case being investigated by the police, and therefore in my eyes no suspected wrong doing. I'm not the biggest fan of Ronaldo as a person but this is just as I see it. |

As a father, there's always a valid reason when a baby criesz eheh. In this case there was an obvious penalty during the first half. The VAR, the same that pulled 2 minutes of football back to catch a slight touch on the 2nd half, did nothing on that one though. Ronaldo got the just yellow card for crying too much though XD |

It's a blessing that VAR can uphold the rules of the game with such detail.
It's also a blessing that blatant or subtle referee mistakes, by accident or on purpose, are a thing of the past, at least for Euro and World cups.

07.01.24 | "Have some faith. The lad has natural talent"
Foden doesn't fit. Southgate won't do it, but I'd drop him and try and find a better balance than having him cutting inside all the time from the left. With Tripper behind him, it was never going to work. No width whatsoever. It'll be the same problem if Trippier is out because it seems like we just brought Shaw along for a laugh as he isn't fit enough (another ridiculous decision).
Just take buddha's team and replace Foden with Saka. He's a natural winger and left-footed. That's less of an adjustment for him than it would be for others. Gordon should get a proper look-in from the bench too |

It won't change my perception of him as a person though. He's an interesting psychological 'case study' perhaps, but beyond that I don't think it'll soften my stance on him being a massive wanker |

Voivod
07.06.24 | -- Greece were the most boring euro winners let's not kid ourselves
Not only as a Hellene, but also as a soccer enthousiast, I vehemently beg to differ.
There's is nothing more exciting that half of the team acting like a bus in front of the defending post, while the other half is trying to steal the ball in the center and then play its socks off in swift and deadly counter-attacks.
That's what happened in 2004. Rehhagel copied the Italian recipe, which, well, has been successful in terms of trophies and cannot work without talented players.
-- I don’t think that’s it tbh. Too many club games, international football is inferior because limited time / training for cohesion etc.
It's exactly the sheer amount of club games that forces players to be more athletes, less soccer players, because talent, if it's there in the first place, flourishes with practice in the interim time between games.
With so many club games per season, there is no time to really sit down and deeply think about the game, so most soccer players need to be athletes first and foremost in order to survive. |
DDDeftoneDDD
07.06.24 | Great take Voivod.
"Thought it was terrible, France no where near what they were a few years ago either.
Spain Germany was great after a nothing first half."
Cause they were playing against Portugal. France in fact did not scored any decent goal this Euro, but barelly suffered any goal either. This Euro is marked by an extreme presence on midfield (only 1 stryker) and absolute balance in every moments of the game. That's why it's so hard to score. Germany vs Spain was "great", as you say, on 2nd half, because Spain scored on one of the few chances they got, making the game to open a bit. Spain played really good football, but they had the same issues when the game got tough against a great team, such as the germans. |
bighubbabuddha
07.06.24 | Deftone that game was trash. Ronaldo and Mbappe were anonymous. 0 xG at half time, france had zero creativity in midfield, Portugal had a few more chances but the manager taking off Fernandes and not Ronaldo was a disgrace. Penalties most exciting part of the game |

Most fearless set of penalties I’ve ever seen from us tho. Is this the universe balancing itself out? Lol. Great strike from Saka though, pleased for the guy
Weird tournament. Lots of average teams. Even France look average. Spain should win but football is weird |
NexCeleris
07.06.24 | France and England might be the most boring teams, but their defense is unmatched. Have a hard time imagining NL crack that English wall tbh. Same for Spain, who had a good time abusing the not-so-pacey Kimmich, but will face a much bigger challenge in Hernandez/Walker/Trippier. |
zakalwe
07.07.24 | A clanger is due.
Take your pick from Pickford, Stones or Guehi having an absolute mare. |
DoofDoof
07.07.24 | I’d drop Guehi, he exudes nervousness - the Villa lad was instantly calmer and simply better.
Stones looked less sleepy vs the Swiss too.
Foden, again, the unlucky charm last night. Is it ever going to happen for him?
Palmer is a real street fighter, should get more minutes. |
zakalwe
07.07.24 | Yeah I’ve been impressed with Palmer as well.
I hate to admit it because he is always good for a goal but maybe the time has come to drop Kane, the bloke is absolutely spent. |
DoofDoof
07.07.24 | Yeah, Kane could be one you wheel on for penalties rather than take off late!
Toney doesn’t really have the finesse but he’s just this rangy handful of a player- Wally Otkins is always there if Big Ivan flops I guess |
bighubbabuddha
07.07.24 | I would keep the 3-4-3 formation.
I was impressed with Konsa but believe he got injured towards the end.
My team would be
Pickford
Walker Stones Guehi
Saka Mainoo Rice Shaw
Palmer Bellingham
Kane
Trippier has killed our left flank, if Shaw is fit he needs to start for 70 minutes.
It's time for Palmer to replace Foden.
I'd stick with Kane but was disappointed with his performance. |

07.07.24 | the tournament would have been greatly improved with Portugal and Germany progressing - think everyone's done with Spain and France winning |
DoofDoof
07.07.24 | I'm still of the belief Kane will finally play well in one 'big game' in his career and he's running out of tournaments for that to happen so could/should be this one.
Insane he's never played well in a massive game for England, Spurs or Bayern... |
bighubbabuddha
07.07.24 | Depends who is in charge for WC 26 and form of other strikers but there's a chance Kane sits on the bench in 2 years time if Southgate isn't manager
He'll be 32, 2 months from 33 |
DoofDoof
07.07.24 | as he ages he becomes less likely to put in that performance that 'wins a tournament' or 'knocks out the favourites in a tournament'
feeling very close to 'now or never' imo
next year's CL would be his second best chance, next WC I doubt he starts for England |
bighubbabuddha
07.07.24 | Yeah, another two seasons playing Bundesliga and CL will tire his legs out. Will take much longer to recover and any pace will be pretty much gone. |

07.07.24 | Spain are the best side sadly, but the best team don't always win, thankfully - as that would be predictable and football is all about the unpredictable... |
bighubbabuddha
07.07.24 | I think Spain going forward are the best side but believe their defence has weaknesses. Their team and back 4 are small so they are potentially vulnerable from set pieces. Nacho and Carvajal are 34 and 32 and not the quickest. If England were to face Spain in the final then Saka would also have Cucurella for toast |

07.08.24 | fgs, Zwayer is ref for the England game. He's the ref that Bellingham criticised in that post-match interview for match fixing. |
NexCeleris
07.08.24 | Zwayer has been fine as far as this tournament goes. It's the Bundesliga games where his decisions have been dubious time and again. He was involved in a notorious corruption/match-fixing scandal in 2005. More allegations came to light in 2014 (where he was voted ref of the year).
People will always be suspicious when he refs, and he won't ever be able to shake that bad image, in all likelihood. There were several instances of clear misjudgment by him these past two seasons. VAR rules will need some serious revisions in order to prevent bs like that from happening. |
bighubbabuddha
07.08.24 | he stopped reffing for two months after Bellingham's comments. My concern is that he'll have it in for Jude and England and see this match as a form of retributive karma. He may be fine but I highly doubt. |

Demon of the Fall
07.10.24 | Yamal is an unreal talent, but Spain as a whole are the best team at the tournament because of their cohesive whole. They have great players, but they're not all superstars. Their passing, movement, positioning, teamwork, savvy etc. all playing a part. So many teams have looked considerably less than the sum of their parts. Not Spain. I fancied them after seeing their group stage performances, so it's not really a surprise to me.

by the standards of recent England matches it was phenomenally entertaining, lol

DoofDoof
07.11.24 | Spain are an ‘it works or it dunt’ side, France looked strong until the keed scored the best goal of the tournament and gave the whole side a shot of belief/adrenaline.
They’re beatable, they’re not the vintage Spain side who lifted the WC, not that level
They’re moderate favourites, I’d rate it 60/40 in spains favour - but Spain HAVE shat the bed out of nowhere in recent tournaments
If France had made the final vs England I’d have rated that 50/50, so the final I wanted from the semi lineup
The dream final would have been England vs Germany of course |

NexCeleris
07.11.24 | English side won me over with that passionate first half last night. Kane rolling around after that contact was funny, but not even half as despicable as Nacho pounding the ground after a slight shirt pull or Carvajal screaming in anguish after tripping over a foot.

bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | i think Southgate did well in 2018 to get to the semis
He was using the likes of Lingard, Young and Henderson and little squad depth
But in the last 4 years the team has got so much better on paper and we have the best squad depth in the world. A lot of the success comes down to a wealth of talented players coming through and performing at a high level in the prem and CL
His decision to bring on bottlers Sancho and Rashford cost us the penalty shoot out vs Italy.
I still think Southgate holds us back in terms of style of play and subs. We could play so much better with a manager with tactical nous.
That being said he's changed the culture and relations with media for the better and his subs have been good in terms of personnel but not timing this tournament |
Demon of the Fall
07.11.24 | yeah, I thought Southgate WAS doing well, but the expectations have shifted since then. We have become more demanding (quite rightly)
The squad is still somewhat imbalanced despite the increase in depth though, to be fair. France have a ridiculous pool of talent to choose between and a few other nations may not have the 'depth', but perhaps also don't have gaping holes in specific areas (like LB until Shaw returned, midfield generally). Then again Spain survived France playing 38 yo 'ex-winger' Jesus Navas vs Mbappe somehow, so it's not like they were blessed everywhere either |
DoofDoof
07.11.24 | it is time to move on from Southgate after this tournament...but if he lifts the trophy he'll fight to stay for the World Cup, anyone would |
bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | France don't have depth at GK, CAM or ST. They had to call up 37 Giroud because of lack of depth. Will also be interesting who takes the CAM position once Griezmann retires internationally.
Spain lack depth across the back 4 and if Morata is injured from the security guard they will have to play 34 y/o Joselu who is clinical but slow as hell |
bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | England don't have depth at LB and CDM but are pretty stacked in every other position |
Demon of the Fall
07.11.24 | Giroud is one of those players who always gets called up. International football is weird like that. France didn't really 'have to' but fine to say they aren't that blessed, strikers are in short supply for most nations it seems
the problem with CDM isn't that England don't have 'depth' it's that we literally have no-one at all. Rice is playing there out of necessity. We just don't produce them. All box-to-box 8s, no 6s (this is still weird to me as I see them as '4s' but whatever, things change / depends on the system etc.) |
bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | I mean England are blessed with strikers
Kane
Watkins last season got 27 goals and 14 assists in all comps last season
Toney is a great 'physical' striker that holds up the ball well and can take pens
even our 4th choice not in the squad is 26 y/o Solanke who got 21 goals last season in all comps for Bournemouth |
Demon of the Fall
07.11.24 | yeah we are, certainly more so than I can ever remember. We're good for attackers generally. I won't argue with that |
DoofDoof
07.11.24 | it's impressive considering how tactics have changed - usually only one out and out striker
back in the day you had a lot more - people like Fowler, Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, Defoe, Kevin Phillips...these peeps got an absolute tonne of league goals and sometimes wouldn't make an England squad even in the days you always took four out and out forwards because two would always start |
Pikazilla
07.11.24 | Doof, I feel the English playstyle has changed and for the worse
I hope we go aggressive as fuck in the final, would make for a classic match as long as our defenders have the team's backs |
DoofDoof
07.11.24 | Pika, I think the early part of the Spain vs France match showed you can get under Spain's skin so I agree aggression is key. I think if possible it is time to start Shaw ahead of Trippier as that'll balance the defence, Spain will give our defence their first FULL workout - we've protected the defence really well so far this tournament, Pickford has made about five saves in total?
I don't think England are moving away from the prevalent trends in football tactics, I'd say more that we're right in that group, more teams were cautious than attacking in this tournament. I preferred the days before this level of stats, the sort telling you that walking goals in is more effective than trying to set up shots from deeper - hopefully things change up again :/ |

DoofDoof
07.11.24 | '> more teams were cautious than attacking in this tournament

It is primarily due to the nature of statistical analysis in the modern game. |
Pheromone
07.11.24 | i think it's primarily to do with jose mourinho |
bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | I think the dutch were poor on the ball yesterday. they missed the quality of F. De Jong and Koopmeiners. We were so good in the first half because there was a mismatch in midfield and plenty of space. The reason the second half was closer was because the dutch put more midfielders on.
I think Spain have the quality to keep the ball under pressure with Rodri and Fabian Ruiz. We will need to use our wingbacks to push their fullbacks right back. I'd also recommend Bellingham loosely man marks Rodri to stop him dictating play |
Demon of the Fall
07.11.24 | nah, top club sides are playing riskier football than ever before. High lines. Playing out of the back under immense pressure. League play is especially open at times, particularly in England and Germany. Of course you’ll get the odd bus parked with a serious talent disadvantage, but even then not always. Honestly think a couple of you are talking complete tosh.
National team tournaments are always a bit different. It’s a cup comp, the players have less time together to come up with intricate tactics etc. It’s just a different game
The argument about players being more regimented / predictable or whatever was spot on, this is tosh |
zakalwe
07.11.24 | ‘We will need to use our wingbacks to push their fullbacks right back’
This will make it ridiculously easy for Del Solero and Grassyarse to run in behind. |
bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | With 3 at the back and Rice and Mainoo sitting I trust them to deal with the wingers. And out of possession Shaw and Saka and run back and create a a back 5. Spain are dangerous when their full backs overlap |
bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | Shaw is great at tracking back and his physicality should hopefully nullify Yamal |
bighubbabuddha
07.11.24 | I'm not saying the wingbacks go gung ho but they do need to push forward into the opposition half in pos |

07.11.24 | As I haven’t been creative since I left school in ‘96 and have not been this invigorated by football since then I’ve gone full David Brent and been inspired to write this.
From the land where a ball was first stitched and cries of goal are shouted comes a match in which Lions are looking to be slain by a formidable foe undoubted
The shores will be a deafened howl caused by 50 million strong fuelled up on lager bellowing against the opposing Armada

DoofDoof
07.14.24 | Tournament rating: 5 out of 10
You needed an underdog to win it to make this relatively poor quality tournament memorable.
As is? One of the most underwhelming and instantly forgettable tournaments ever.
Was there a hat trick? Were there more than five wonder goals? Were there more than four goals in more than a handful of games? Were there more than a couple of breakout 'new superstars'? Did any of the 'last chance saloon' legendary players perform?
It was a bit of a clunker. Onwards. |
DoofDoof
07.14.24 | For England:
Say goodbye to Southgate.
Strip the captaincy from Kane and give it to Bellingham and get him to grow into the role.
Walker, Trent, Gallagher, Trippier, Bowen, Toney....these lads shouldn't make the World Cup.
Positives for England: Pickford, Bellingham, Mainoo, Guehi, Saka, Palmer |
Pikazilla

Kane will win a trophy of some sort but I'm starting to worry he'll never perform in a proper 'big game'. His massive weakness when it comes to rating his career with the best of the best. |

07.14.24 | hubba, the great cry of the unwashed was 'get him to goal hang in the box' but he was actually less effective trying that than dragging defenders away and threading through balls or putting in crosses. It's what 'the people' wanted though, it was a nice dream. He didn't look particularly sharp either way though. |

DoofDoof
07.14.24 | ‘Bad year for English football’
Half the squad are teenagers who’ve hardly played together before and Southgate is going - future is about as bright as it can get?
This was a really poor tournament for Italy, Portugal, Belgium and France I’d say - and bitterly disappointing for Scotland and Germany. I wouldn’t say it was bad for Holland, Georgia or England. Those teams look like they can build.
I’d bet the mortgage on this ending up one of the weaker starting 11s Bellingham plays in for his England tournament career, let’s just say that. |
Pikazilla
07.14.24 | Georgia was cooking this tournament
I certainly didn't expect them to do as well as they did
Holland I always feel bad for because they make deep runs and lose |
Pikazilla
07.14.24 | And yeah, with the young talent we've got coming in, I feel that we might become actual title contenders in the future as opposed to our usual 'dark horse to make it to the quarters' stigma |
bighubbabuddha
07.14.24 | Reaching a successive Euros final is a great achievement for English football. We need to retire Trippier, Walker and Kane (also move on Maguire, Guehi is a far superior option) but the majority of our squad are young and will continue to improve in time for the WC. We just need Southgate to see out his contract to December and to bring in someone with tactical nous. Klopp would be the dream |

07.15.24 | Before the final, I anticipated a 3-1 score, 2-1 is fair enough.
England tried to steal the tournament in the most half-assed way possible, but historically it lacks the talent and temerity Mediterranean teams like Spain, Italy and Greece have shown over the years.
Which brings me to my final point.
The 2004 tournament was mediocre? Some folks need to learn their soccer, especially those whose country invented the game.
What are we gonna say next? That the 1992 tournament was mediocre because Denmark assembled its roster on the fly, from the beaches?
Second best team in the tournament: The Netherlands, hands down. |

Yes, gameplay-wise this would be correct. |

Spain and Germany were the best sides in terms of style of play/performances
Austria were the best in the groups |

07.15.24 | -- Yes, gameplay-wise this would be correct.
gameplay-wise, this would be correct, if uefa hadn't sent word for Denmark to compete at all, because as it turned out, there was at least one national team better than the entire tournament at that time. |

Egarran
07.15.24 | Ah yes, agreed. How would you rate this one? Like 6/10 for me, trying to be objective. Spain really saved it. |
Voivod
07.15.24 | I would put a 7/10 due to the drive of several "second tier" national teams, which are definitely on the rise, to rival traditional powerhouses, which save for Spain, are in decline. |

bighubbabuddha
07.16.24 | Spain have an age problem. Morata will be 33 next WC, Joselu 35 their 2nd Striker is retiring internationally. Carvajal will be 34 at WC and Navas 39 is retiring internationally. Laporte will be 33 at WC so probably be okay but the Saudi league isn't great but Nacho will have retired internationally. They may have people coming through but it is a concern for them |
bighubbabuddha
07.16.24 | Argentina are favourites for me even if Messi retires. Huge keeper who saves pens, best CB partnership in international football with Martinez and Romero, balanced skilful midfield, unbelievable striker in Lautaro Martínez and they have one of the best young wingers in world football in Garnacho developing.
Germany and England have the most potential with the age profiles of their players
France with a better manager and yeah Spain
Netherlands if they have Frenkie De Jong and Koopmeiners fit also a different side than the one we saw in Euros |
