TOOL ranked

I’ve been listening to a lot of Tool lately, and Fear Inoculum has finally clicked with me, so it seemed a perfect time to rank all of Tool’s releases.

10,000 Days

In my opinion the most realized / developed progressive metal LP ever recorded. It takes everything that worked on Lateralus and made it more versatile and emotional. This is in my top 5 albums of all time, there’s just something really special about this record. I also feel like i’m the only person who believes the band delivered on their promise of this being their heaviest album. The « it sounds like Meshuggah » thing is kinda accurate tbh. 6/5

Ænima

One of the most essential albums to come out of the 90’s. It’s catchy, groovy, and has a healthy dosage of progressive experimentation that teased at the band’s future work. Third Eye is my favorite Tool song hands down. 5/5

Fear Inoculum

I think this may shock / annoy some people because it’s higher than most people would put it. I’ll admit, i HATED this album for months after it came out. I thought it was slow and only repeated old ideas. But one late night drive changed that completely. Yes, it’s slower and more deliberate... but then again, so is a lot of the band’s work. I don’t see how Lateralus is so well-loved when it’s filled with the same purposeful pace. This works similarly i think, and works even better in a lot of cases. A majority of tracks here are contenders in a top 10 Tool songs list, the drumming is as immaculate as ever, and i personally find Maynard’s newer style of singing downright captivating. My only complaint involves the filler intro tracks... like Chocolate Chip Trip just feels like a waste of my time. This is definitely a grower that deserves the time to flourish. 4.8/5 (i could honestly see this being a 5 with some more time)

Lateralus

At one point this was my favorite, but with time it’s sort of stagnated with me, perhaps i’ve overplayed it? Idk, it’s a damn fantastic album, but there are some tracks i feel drag a bit, and the vocals are particularly one-note compared to other albums. But besides that, this album is ground breaking and packed to the brim with standout tracks. 4.5/5

Undertow

A more groovy / hardcore take on Tool. It’s a raw and dark album that excels with its atmosphere and energy. A lot of Quicksand vibes on this. Definitely not my favorite Tool LP, but that doesn’t mean it’s not truly great. 4/5
6Tool
Salival

Kinda boring imo, but i do love the No Quarter cover 3/5
7Tool
Opiate

This is a solid EP with a lot of promise, similar to Undertow but less dark. 3/5
