| Saw Gone Girl (spoilers)
Just saw Gone Girl, David Fincher's new film and the adaptation of the best-
selling book by Gillian Flynn, who adapted her own novel for the
screenplay. My thoughts... MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD | 1 | | Foxygen ...And Star Power
Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are predictably great, but I didn't get a huge sense
of chemistry between them. There was something... off about their interactions with
each other. I thought their characters' quirkiness was going to be part of "the big
reveal" or whatever, but nothing ever came to fruition. | 2 | | Devonte Hynes Palo Alto (Original Motion Picture Score)
I generally like movies that are unpredictable, but this one was, let's say,
predictable in its unpredictableness. Basically, you could tell that she was going to
frame him from the start, I just didn't know how. And you could also tell that either
she or Neil Patrick Harris' character was going to eat it eventually, you just didn't
know who or when. Honestly, with all the hype around this movie, I expected a
more twisty plot than what was given. | 3 | | Broods Evergreen
Speaking of the plot, some of it didn't make a whole lot of sense. So at the end,
when Amy is being questioned by the cops, and she's trying her best to fake it, she
actually gets away with it? Even the Feds don't come in and ask her a bunch of
questions about where she was or what she was doing afterwards? That's kinda
bullshit. I expected better of a Fincher-directed film. | 4 | | Lights Little Machines
OK, was it just me, or was this movie unnecessarily dark? I realize Fincher likes his
shadowy cinematography (he's been working with D.P. Jeff Cronenweth for years),
but there were times in this film where I can barely see the characters' faces, if at
all. Either my theater needed to turn the lights up a tiny bit (not likely), or an aging
Fincher forgot how to light a scene (more likely). Either way, while the
cinematography was generally great and very well-done, there were small
moments where it could've been done a lot better. | 5 | | Flying Lotus You're Dead!
Regarding Neil Patrick Harris' death scene: well, this wouldn't be a Fincher film
without a scene of shockingly bloody violence (and this is one aspect I did
genuinely like, just for its WTF factor). But Amy making herself look like she was
raped is one major plot hole: didn't Harris' character say he rigged the whole house
with cameras? So wouldn't all of her acting be caught on tape anyway? Why did she
even try? And why didn't the cops look at the tapes afterwards? Again, it's amazing
that the filmmakers' didn't catch this. And, speaking of the bloody death scene... | 6 | | Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Gone Girl
BRAHHHHHMMMMMM Yes, the day has come, ladies and gentlemen. They said it
would never come to be, but here it is. Mr. Nine Inch Nails himself has finally
succumbed to the HORN OF DOOM, but given a nice synthesized spin for that little
industrial Reznor touch. Come on Trent, this kind of gimmick is so far below you,
why the hell did you have to succumb to it during the movie's most pivotal scene? I
nearly laughed out loud in the theater, but chose to restrain myself for fear of
looking like a sociopath. The rest of the soundtrack is awesome and lives up to
NIN's best ambient moments, but then this turd of a track comes along, and makes
me question what the hell Trent and Atticus were thinking. Is this supposed to be a
parody of every HORN OF DOOM movie moment of the last 5 or so years? If it is, it
didn't work very well. | 7 | | Julian Casablancas and The Voidz Tyranny
So what the hell was the point of this movie anyway? (Same question goes for the
book, even though I haven't read it.) That men are backstabbing cheaters and
liars? That women are self-serving bitches ready to throw you away at a moment's
notice? That the media don't give a shit about the people involved in a missing
persons case and are ready to sensationalize every piece of dubious news that
comes their way? Oh, how it's all so original. Gone Girl certainly isn't a bad movie,
and has a great number of bright spots, but for all of that, it's still filled with plot
holes and dubious messages. The film is like the girl at the center of the story:
while you're watching it, you're enticed by it. After you leave the theater, it's
disappeared from your mind just as quickly. A solid 5/10, IMO. | |

10.06.14 | My first major disappointment of the year. Comments are welcome :) | scottpilgrim10
10.06.14 | this is at least an A for me.
I just think Nick is an idiot, and should have said what he had planned to say during the interview. | Balerion
10.06.14 | your crazy man. I saw it on Friday and loved it. Soundtrack was great, wtf scene was great. I didn't really get the fed thing much either, but it is a movie. I thought there was a lot of feminism going on in the movie, maybe that ties in with the "point of it". I liked how the movie ended a lot. It made me feel very uncomfortable, and I think thats what they were going for.
Somewhere between an 8/9 on this one
But I was laughing about the horn too lol! | BeneaththeDarkOcean
10.06.14 | @scott, agreed, if I was him, I would've just gone ahead with the plan myself
@Balerion, "it is a movie" is like the worst excuse for a plot hole ever. | tempest--
10.06.14 | I didn't think it was too dark so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
for 5 - it wasn't a major plot hole at all. Remember when she brought him his keys and kissed him/pulled out his shirt? Then Harris walks out the front door touching his lips and tucking in his shirt, while Pike tied her ankles and wet her legs and was crying to the camera. Presumably, things like this continued throughout the time she stayed there. On his cameras it looks like he had been raping here. | Veldin
10.06.14 | Film raped my self-conscious and drained my soul of hope. 10/10 | IronGiant
10.06.14 | I enjoyed it a lot. It probably helped that I hadn't read the book first. A solid 7/10 for me, especially for someone who isn't big on this type of genre in general. Ben Affleck's acting was nothing extraordinary but it fit the part well | ti0n
10.06.14 | yeah dude but you cant blame the movie for that. basically its the same problem most people had with the book too. i'm still not sure what to think of the book. i actually liked it more before the twist.
i mean amy literally became this girl: http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130728070216/villains/images/e/ea/Overly_Attached_Girlfriend.jpg.
i had my hard time with taking her seriously. basically i couldnt | sblevins95
10.06.14 | Damn I enjoyed this a lot more than you, haven't read the book or anything and didn't even know about the plot when I went to see it. Glad I didn't, it was great. The ending seemed so haunted and I still don't know if I liked how it did so or not. Fantastic movie, though. Didn't even know Trent & Atticus did the soundtrack and I kinda freaked in the opening credits when I saw that | zakalwe
10.07.14 | Film is amazing!
Watch it now!!!
But yeah point 5 does mess things up a bit. | BertMacklinFBI
10.07.14 | Awesome list. I haven't seen the movie yet, but the soundtrack was pretty awesome | scottpilgrim10
10.07.14 | I mean she was with NPH for a few weeks I think, so she probably figured out how to use the security system during that time. She probably went into the same amount of detail and planning with the staged rape as she did with the staged kidnapping/killing | zakalwe
10.07.14 | She was only there for a few days but in fairness there was a lot of focus on her faffing about with the CCTV. | scottpilgrim10
10.07.14 | Oh I thought it was a really long time. Yeah I guess it wasn't that important of a detail to flesh out in the film. Besides we wouldn't have been surprised at the murder scene if Fincher did flesh out her plan to return to Nick. | zakalwe
10.07.14 | Thinking back I think your right she goes missing for a month so yeah it's at least a week at Dougie Howsers | scottpilgrim10
10.07.14 | It's ok, there are time jumps every 5 minutes. |
