props for 2. great list. only thing i haven't heard anything from is 10
No In Rainbows = No List
In Rainbows's average. Also I haven't heard much from 2007 so maybe these albums are much better but you could check out Fear of a Blank Planet and Year Zero.
in rainbows is average and foabp is worth checking out?
Well yes. In Rainbows is done very well but it so derivative, I mean it would be a good album if it wasn't for the fact that it's 7th Radiohead CD. Well done poppy songs but mostly lacking substance (only "Weird Fishes" makes a good impression). Fear of a Blank Planet on the other hand, while far from perfect, with its moody electronics and countless guitar sounds successfully captures the mood of an entire, rotten generation. "My Ashes" is yet another Wilson ballad, but "Sleep Together" is a fresh mix of progressive metal, orchestral and dense, dark electronics a la NIN, "Sentimental" picks up where Reznor's "Right Where It Belongs" left off and "Anesthetize" sumps it all up in its almost post-rockish sondscapes.
"I mean it would be an good album if it wasn't for the fact that it's 7th Radiohead CD. Well done poppy songs but mostly lacking substance"
disagreed hard. to me in rainbows sounds extremely fresh and instantly engaging. every song (well, except for house of cards) hits hard
"Fear of a Blank Planet on the other hand, while far from perfect, with its moody electronics and countless guitar sounds successfully captures the mood of an entire, rotten generation"
well not at all. it's steven wilson (age 40 back then) trying to write what a 12-yr-old might feel and that's a complete trainwreck of an idea. musically it does have some sweet moments, especially on anesthetize and sentimental but i can't help but cringe when it comes to the lyrics
'but i can't help but cringe when it comes to the lyrics'
That's me with every Wilson penned song. Bloke is an awful lyricist.
yeah he has never been a good lyricist but on foabp he found a completely new low
How come it's a trainwreck of an idea? His age would be a problem if he tried to pretend that it's *his* feelings etc., like Manson or Reznor on some of their late albums, which is sometimes so grotesque. But Wilson clearly distances himself from the lyrics, so I can't see what's wrong.
I'm not a fan of Wilson's simplistic lyrics but Fear of a Blank Planet is one album where they fit well, especially combined with the nu-metal-touched music.
'In school I don't concentrate
And sex is kinda fun
But just another one
Of all the empty ways
Of using up a day'
Surely better than his Stupid Dream years, where he wrote similarly and ACTUALLY MEANT IT
"But Wilson clearly distances himself from the lyrics, so I can't see what's wrong."
sure but still the lyrical content is absolutely horrendous. his idea of a teenager's mind is shallow as fuck
Don't hate me
I'm not special like you
I'm tired and I'm so alone
Don't fight me
I know you'll never care
Can I call you on the telephone, now and then?
Well there's this thing called hyperbole
I do like In Rainbows, though it's not my favorite. Would this have been top 15, it would have made an appearance.
Also, I love NIN, but Year Zero never really sat well with me. I need to go through it again, but I know it wasn't near this list.
@altertide hyperbole or not, the lyrics really disturb my listening experience
@Artuma Well, whatever. As I've said I'm not a fan of Wilson's lyrical style (though I like the surreal TSMS) so yeah, not a big deal.
@BeeRyan Year Zero certainly has its problems (the biggest being its repetitiveness (or length, depends on how you look at it)), but it's brilliant in places, so it's great you've tried ;)
definitely got some problems. all my NIN fan friends say it's their second favorite aside from the fragile though, so i really do need to go deeper.
