Better Late Than Never

Best of 2009, McP style
1Panopticon
Collapse

Grim, powerful, melodic...breathtaking.
2John Frusciante
The Empyrean

From the slow build of a massive guitar cascade to the final chord, this album breathes the pretension of John Frusciante's writing style, summarizing all his past works and creating something more powerful than many of them ever were.
3Say Anything
Say Anything

Max Bemis proves to me that he can write good songs, and not overfill the rest of the album with 20 other pieces of mediocrity. He can waver between boy band silliness, cutting sarcasm, pop-rock catchiness... and even beauty.
4Dinosaur Jr.
Farm

What is there to say? J Mascis does work. He does it well. He does it with great solos and catchy rhythms. Solid work from the old goons once again.
5And So I Watch You From Afar
And So I Watch You From Afar

This band can't decide if they want to be post-rock or post-hardcore. So they're just post-good, and are just really great. Their song structures might get repetitive, but its really hard to find instrumentals this brutally catchy and fun to listen to.

It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All A Dream! It's Alright

Album made me a believer, and I don't just mean with the band either.
7Iron Age
The Sleeping Eye

Wtf is this. I didn't know that hardcore punk was supposed to have thrash influences and massive amounts of RIFFS and CHUGGING and ARGH.
8Have A Nice Life
Voids

It's not terribly original, but its more than novelty to listen some of the song's original recordings, and the b-sides from Deathconciousness are also great. I also touch myself to this band.
9Solstafir
Kold

I dunno if this is black metal, or sludge metal...or post metal. It's really fucking good, really fucking deep, and really fucking powerful. It's an example of the more artistic progression of extreme metal.
10Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

16 year old girls who take sideways pictures on over-priced cameras and a blurry lens don't listen to good music. Too bad they got this album right. Album is everything right about faux art people in high school. If that makes sense.
