| 2009 Thoughts
THESE ARE NOT MY TOP ALBUMS. Although for what
it's worth I'd but
the XX at the top. Just some general thoughts on
some albums from
this year that got a lot of hype here, and that
I've actually listened
to. | | 1 | | Brand New Daisy
Possibly one of my favourite bands final album. I liked this loads more when
it came out than I do now, and I'd probably just say in the grand scheme
it's really above average and nothing more. "Vices" would be more
awesome if it didn't include that annoying minute long intro, but it really
was the highlight - a few songs o nthe tail end of the album are also really
awesome, but it kinda bugs me that some of the lyrics are still YFW esque -
I don't want the band to change so much that I can't recognize but
improving on their occasionally embarrassing lyrics can only be a good
thing. "At the Bottom" was also really good, as are most of the tracks, and
maybe I'm just spoilt but I really expected a bigger jump than what they
delivered. Still enjoyed it though. | | 2 | | The XX XX
Chilled, emotional, understated etc etc etc. Just really awesome. I love that
bass sound at the start of tracks like "Island", and the dual vocals work
well, and the best thing is even thought it could totally have gone the other
way it manages to avoid sounding cheesy or contrived. I also really like
their cover of "Teardrops". | | 3 | | Converge Axe to Fall
This is really good, loved it tbh. The guitar work is awesome, and whilst it's
not as outright heavy as Jane Doe, it's better in my estimation - my
favourite is probably the title track, just a really enjoyable album. | | 4 | | Lady Gaga The Fame Monster
My best "discovery" of 2009 - Lady Gaga. Yes, I know it's not in any way an
achievement seeing as she's everywhere but there's a good reason for
that - she's amazing. This EP/album is so good, and the video for Bad
Romance is cool too. I know she "broke" in 2008 but this and The Fame are
top quality and I've played the death out of them both - looking forward to
see what she'll do next. Lady Gaga. Paparazzi. MTV VMAs 2009. SO GOOD. | | 5 | | The Horrors Primary Colours
I reviewed this, and a lot of magazines seem to agree as to the quality of
this album. Whilst I probably haven't listened ot it as much as I thought I
would it definitely does have staying power in the sense that it hasn't
gotten any worse so far. The indie bands that seem to stay slightly left field
of the Kaiser Chiefs/Fratellis/Kooks etc etc trend (see also the
aforementioned XX and also Foals) are actually deserving of the hype
they've been getting I find, and this is no different. | | 6 | | Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt II
This came out JUST as I started getting into Wu Tang - how's that for
timing? I'd long liked Liquid Swords but never really bothered to listen to
anything else my friend lent me - but I'm glad I did. This is o nthe list as
it's
obviously a top quality album, but really this year I've been listening to
loads of Wu stuff in general, so it's worked perfectly. Personally my
favourite is Ghostface but they're pretty much all good - Mystery of
Chessboxin' is their best song imo. | |
